This song is such an accomplishment. It's simple presentation with a single acoustic guitar played plainly, frames a melancholy poem about fleeting companionship, youth, and the fragility of human relationships. Conor Oberst comes to no deep conclusions, voices no outrage or hurt. He points out no injustice. It's unrequired. His story is mostly told in a series comments to his companion "Julie" It's moving impact results from rich images of a drug and alcohol powered adventure in New York City. Enough said. Mr. Oberst has gifted me a song that must be included in my top 20 favorites of all time, and it could still be climbing the charts.

I feel like Conor Oberst doesn't get the recognition for the lyrical genius he is. He still writes real music, not autotuned, repeated tracks. He is the Bob Dylan of this era and I feel that the majority of the world has yet to experience his and mike mogus' music.

I was there and the lineup on this stage that day was hieroglyphics, atmosphere, death cab for cutie, cursive, bright eyes then flaming lips and the cure played the main stage. Talk about a killer lineup . This was video is actually from the 2004 Coachella the summer before I’m wide awake/digital ash was released in January 2005

Crazy how low key and indie Coachella used to be. This was the beginning of the big wave of festivals as this big cash cow, now they’re almost all identical

Yeah I went the next year, saw Rilo Kiley, The Faint, Arcade Fire, etc. Bright Eyes played again but if I remember right it was mostly the Digital Ash stuff (my favorite) with Nick Zinner on lead guitar. The biggest acts were NIN and New Order, which shows you how much has changed

Man... I try not to think about it too often but, after your listing of that line up I can't help but to feel athe sad nostalgia of "WTF has happened to music!? Summer concerts..?" There are still some great acts today but, they never seem to be on the same lineup for shows. I feel like (for me) that perhaps the last "great year" of album releases for a long time was during the year 2008. What we gonna' do about this problem?? 😧🤔

@@DigitalAsh13 It seems like he’s more or less got his shit together now, although he has been through some heaviness in the last few years, what with his brother and the false sexual-abuse allegations and etc. Obviously you never know what’s going on behind the scenes, but at least to me, things don’t have the feeling they did then

@@ambientexpanse Yesss this is very true also!! Although I still remember seeing a few people attempting to film those like, minute long terrible quality snippets you could get on a flipphone back then, it was just a handful of people scattered throughout the crowd, rather than the entire audience glued to their phone screens, live-streaming or whatever the hell, missing the fucking concert that’s happening RIGHT in FRONT of them…that always bums me out the max, man. And also makes me feel super old: “Damn whippersnappers!! In my day we got INVOLVED in the show” lol

Reading the comments on this makes me want to say a couple things.... A. This is from 2004, NOT 2005 B. There's an interview because this is from the Coachella DVD which showed Coachella sets/interviews/b-footage of the first 10(?) Years of Coachella. C. This was in April of 2004 and Wide Awake didn't come out til January 2005 so most of the crowd had never heard this song before D. Nick Zinner (from yeah yeah yeahs) played guitar for this set E. For the one comment about cursive/Rilo Kiley... (Not that you'll ever see this but I don't feel like replying to you) Cursive played right before this and they covered Milkshake, it was great. Rilo Kiley played same stage but 2005, also great set. Hope this clears some stuff up. Glad people are still listening to/watching this in 2020.

Those aren't people, I don't think. People have souls amd feel things. I mean so do animals but, an animal wouldn't waste energy clicking a "dislike". Yeah, Idk wtf those creatures of the internet are, where they come from, nor where they go. Just click on the dislike of their dislike which exists in your mind. There you go - Yin and Yang at balance, as always. 🕉☸️☯️
