Sprayers are especially nice for dealing with irregular surfaces like the grooves in the paneling here. If you really want a perfect even matte finish, backroll with a roller after you spray it.

That "black sticky liquid" was probably years and years of cigarette smoke. I was a cleaning lady for 28 years and that's what you get when you spray cleaning solution like 409 on wood paneling or woodwork in a house where someone smoked for a very long time.

When I paint a ceiling I put screw a long handle onto the roller (broom handle works well). I put the paint tray on the floor with dollar store table cloths under it. Load the roller ( fluffy one for you) and go. You need to cut in, around the edges, but most can be done this way.

A wonderful result , but what a lot of work . Apart from the brightening of the room , you have improved the appearance of the wood . Be careful when you wash the walls and ceiling. You said it was stain coming off? It could be tobacco! In my dad's house we started to wash the walls and found the same thing! It was tobacco stain from the previous owner who was a smoker! We stopped because we could get tobacco poisoning through the skin! We tried to use gloves but just did kilz primmer two times. The tobacco was seeping through! The second coat did it.😊

I had a little house with a dark wood ceiling that was only 6'9" high and painting it a very light color made it look higher and removed the gloom from the room. A white room with a few regular windows can be brighter than a dark wood room with a window wall.

We use a thick nap roller in a ceiling roller holder. It has a guard so you don’t drip. We add a screw in wood extension pole and you can roll the ceiling out in front of you so you’re not looking straight up all the time. I believe we got it at Lowe’s. It’s red. There are no labels on ours any longer or I would have posted the name of it. The thick nap gets in the grooves

When I moved in with my husband after his mom died their house was filled with knotty pine paneling. She was a heavy smoker which then made the pine darken and look nasty. I bought a spray bottle and a couple bottles of pinesol. I was amazed at the dark liquid that dripped off the walls. After the treatment the walls were bright and shiny. What might be coming off the ceiling could be the cigarette smoke residue believe me it’s gross. Treat your walls because of your breathing problems

I appreciate the effort it's taking to do it. I did an old farmhouse in VA that was solid bead board from the 1800s and it almost got the best of me. But the end result, just like your ceiling, was so worth it in the end. I always wondered how the people back then could live in darkness like they did. I love paint. It's amazing how a little paint can transform a space! I always check out the reject paint when I go to a store that sells paint. People will have it mixed and decide they don't like it and the store is stuck with it! Expensive paint for $5-10 a gallon! Sometimes they will even add white or tint for a little more money. Of course it's the blue tones I'm after. One time I got a 5 gallon bucket of a lovely blue that was too dark for the customer, and when the guy added a large amount of white tint to it, the shade came out to lovely pale blue. Paint, gotta love it! You guys look happy, which is wonderful. When Maverick says 'dada' the way he does it melts my heart. I'll bet Belle is having a blast with all those bugs and critters to pose for her artwork! ;)
