It's interesting to see someone actually reusing the cylinders and all the internals. Everyone automatically changes everything out with new. If it checks out within tolerance and you're not going racing with it, why not reuse what you have. It's lasted this long for a reason! Nice job Chris. Sweet motor!

I'll never forget the sound these engines had. These type of engines all had that high pitched buzzing sound when going down the road.

Awesome refresh, can you use 356 generator to convert 12v? Do I need 356 starter as well? For 58 beetle.

Yes you can, we do that all the time. Standard 6v starter is fine.

Beautiful work, I do not understand why it is necessary to paint the engine block, cases out of magnesium are needed to breathe and the paint does not help or am missing something? Cheers

She purrs like a kitten! Was gloss black the standard VW color on the fan shroud/tins/etc? Gonna pull the engine on my '68 next spring to do a cosmetic refresh and am debating what colors to go with

Gorgeous ! I know this is off topic Chris but do you have a video or tip or trick for getting the metal brake reservoir line and rubber plug into the top of the early brake master ?

Hmmm I might, not sure though. I have some master cylinder footage on KZfaq on a brake topic, have you checked any of those?

All I found was the single to double reservoir conversion vids

@@davidwhocares3293 All we usually do is lube up the rubber plug and it inserts into the master pretty easily, then the steel line just pokes in the rubber piece.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. :-(!!!!!!!!!!
