Golden memories/times for me as a Brighton Seagulls fan/supporter... I remember the match, whilst I was living growing up in Brighton. Thanks for the video!

This Sunday Liverpool visit Brighton in the FA Cup 4th Round - exactly 39 years since this game. The Goldstone may have given way to The Amex but the Brighton faithful will be just as loud on Sunday.

I saw this game live on TV. I was really distraught at full time, because I had still never seen Liverpool win the FA Cup at the time. I recall my Dad sided with Brighton and gave me stick just to wind me up. If the name 'Gatting' in the BHA team sounds familiar, by the way, his full name is Steve Gatting,, and he's the brother of the England cricket captain of the mid-1980s, Mike Gatting.

And about a minute after I typed that, Brian Moore mentioned Mike Gatting on the commentary anyway...... sigh, why do I bother?

@@martinodoni8943 for all of Liverpool’s sustained success in the 1970’s and 80’s, their FA cup record was ordinary, to say the least. Any idea why?? Especially as they seemed to favour the league cup at times in my opinion.

@@mrkipling2201 I can't really say, it just seemed to be destiny almost. Up until Bill Shankly retired, Liverpool didn't take the League Cup seriously at all. I think Shankly himself invented the term "Mickey Mouse Cup" expressly to convey his contempt for the competition. It was only when it became a 'servant's-entrance' into Europe in the late-1960s that Liverpool could really be bothered with it at all, and even then they barely reached third gear in most games. But the reality is, although Liverpool certainly had a successful history going into the 1960s (five titles was a lot for any one club at that time), the only major trophy Liverpool had ever won was the League Championship. They'd reached the Cup Final twice, once in 1914 against Burnley, once in 1950 against Arsenal, but lost both times and didn't score a single goal in either match. It had almost become part of Merseyside folklore that Liverpool would never win the FA Cup - Evertonians would often say that the Liver Birds would fly away the day Liverpool first won it - and no other major competitions existed until the late-50s, when official European competition started up, followed by the League Cup in 1959. When they finally won the Cup in 1965, it took a huge weight off the club, if only because it finally shut Everton fans up. But they lost in the Final to Arsenal AGAIN in 1971, and there was always a sizeable gap between appearances in the Final for Liverpool back then. A startling statistic is that when Liverpool beat Newcastle United 3-0 in the 1974 Final, Kevin Keegan's first goal on 57 minutes was the first Liverpool had scored in normal time in any domestic Cup Final! Maybe that was part of the problem, they were just too awkward on the big occasion. They certainly looked a bit confused in the 1977 Final against Manchester United. Should be kept in mind that Liverpool's earliest League Cup Final experience wasn't a happy one either, losing to Nottingham Forest in a replay in 1978. They also lost to Arsenal in yet another Final in 1987. In that light, the four-years-in-a-row can be seen to have rather come out of nowhere. There's no doubt that Bob Paisley desperately wanted to win the FA Cup as manager, but it was a competition that was always cruel to him. In 1950, when he was still playing, he scored the winner in the semi-final against Everton, but was then dropped for the Final! And Liverpool then lost to Arsenal without him. And then as manager, he often took his team deep in the competition only to be denied by an opponent having their "day," sometimes Manchester United or Brighton & Hove Albion. If I were to hazard a guess why Liverpool won it so rarely prior to the late-1980s, I'd put it down to most teams being more fired up for the FA Cup than for the League Cup. As for Liverpool's sudden dominance in the competition between 1986 and 1992, that was probably due to the loss of European football as a focal point. But it is strange to reflect that Liverpool have now won the FA Cup 8 times, which constitutes a strong history, and yet by 1985 they had only won it twice. Graeme Souness, Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez all managed to win it, but Bob Paisley of all managers never did. "A funny old game..." I believe someone once said.

Two years running! I think the real shock result was the win at Anfield in 1983. I seem to recollect being rather pessimistic about this one especially after Souness was injured. Btw, I wonder if the only two people in the country to call Liverpool’s right back Philip were Neal’s mother and Ron Atkinson.

Think this was a first or very early live game on tv the club put prices up for a game that was televised and free. Backfired with the crowd down by about 7,000 on what it should have been. 🙄
