❤️ Tom Ellis’ new film ‘Players’ comes out Valentines Day on Netflix (save the date!)
Tom Ellis (Lucifer, Miranda) joins us this week to give his uniquely ironic experience in this industry - going from growing up in a family of baptist ministers to playing the lead in the hit series Lucifer. Tom talks about overcoming impostor syndrome while filming certain episodes and shares the crazy story of how a rogue tweet helped save the show from being cancelled. We also talk about adopting an American dialect, his background in theater with James McAvoy, and his issue with actors using social media.

I wouldn't say it was about confidence. They literally fired him by ending the show, he heard they wanted to bury the news with the announcement of something else. Ofc he didn't care if they were mad at him for announcing the cancelation of the show. I'm not saying he's not confidence, could be, don't have to be, but his confidence didn't matter at that moment.

I love how they inserted the cancellation/saving thing in the series as a nod to the fans - first with Lucifer's comment to Kinley "Vatican investigator? Sounds like a soon-to-be-cancelled tv show" (ep 4x03), then naming ep 4x09 "Save Lucifer", and of course the big brilliant dig at Fox in ep 5x15, where the fake psychic says she was "giving a reading to a programming exec at Fox" with Lucifer drily answering "Ugh, good luck with that"😂

@johnekare8376

@@tjavior Yes, the fans! ...but also the ppl at WB who worked behind the scenes when the saw the reaction of the fan base. It was probably quite a lot of work getting all of the legal stuff in order for Netflix to take over. Fox might have been able to just be petty about it too and prevent it if it had been done poorly. So, he singlehandedly started the movement that saved Lucifer, but many were involved in that movement.

@@tjavior Yeah, Tom gave us fans (Lucifans) the heads up without any permission from Fox because he was gutted for all of us. He knows without us fans watching, being passionate, and vocally expressing that we love what they do, there is no show. Tom knew that, gave us the heads up, then let us go crazy on all social media platforms and with signing petitions. The whole show runners, cast and crew hyped us up, boosting our energies. It was absolutely insane how many tweets we collectively and single handedly posted. It was entirely a team effort, and it got the attention it needed.🤘😈 💜

to be fair, ur not wrong.. but the reason firefly wasn't so popular as it was airing is because the network aired the TV show in mixed order, There is a bit of controversy as to why they did that, but yea firefly is amazing a cult hit and amazing, but sadly before it's time and sabotaged quite bad.. :( A lot of good shows didn't make the early 2000's Deadwood, Rome! both amazing shows canceled, but still worth watching like firefly

Yes, if a show isn't saved immediately like what wound up happening with Yes Dear being canceled and uncanceled between seasons, it can be very expensive to restart production and most of the key behind the scenes folks immediately go looking for work. If it's a show like Farscape where the sets are very expensive and very hard to repurpose it's effectively a fatal ending when the sets are destroyed. At least with Lucifer if the sets were destroyed, they were less unique to the show.

Lucifer was the literal apotheosis of the "detective plus consultant" subgenre. I know there are doubtless fans of the comics who are disappointed it went in a different direction, but for the thing that it is, it's a delight. I can imagine the pitch meeting. An executive asks, "Hasn't this genre been done? We've had sexy lady detectives paired with writers and psychologists and everything else." The pitch continue, "But this is the Devil." Nonplussed Executive: "Like, a really bad criminal?" Pitch, "No, the actual Devil and ruler of Hell." Executive: "I'm in."

I really, really loved the show. All of the actors were absolutely amazing in it, and Tom Ellis as Lucifer is right up there with some of ( in my opinion ) one of the better screen characters of our generation. I've got nothing but love for Tom, and all the others that made Lucifer possible.

Honestly in my opinion 2 of my favorite comic portrayals the writers of the show were brilliant same with the acting. Smallville’s Lex brought this desire for a redeemable Lex Luther and did it so well because it gives you the feeling that he wasn’t given the opportunity of faith but the show did a wonderful job of showing the undertones that we’re there all along of Lex truly just manipulates almost by nature not by lack of nurture. Then the inverse with Lucifer taking a character that is irredeemable by nature and on the forefront comedically giving nurture and letting him kind of work it out and coming to the wrong conclusions because he is so deeply rooted in the idea that he is irredeemably. I enjoyed these portrayals and it was enjoyable to hear you both talk. (Also I see Alan Ritchson in my recommended and that takes me back to the smallville days too and I love reacher so can’t wait to check that one out OG AQUAMAN!)

Tom did a great job playing lucifer. He really embodied the develish side, whilst also displaying that misunderstood side of lucifer that many theologist ponder about. The show it self was no more than a 4/10 for me. Other than likeable castings, the story and writting were subpar. What saved that show and made it enjoyable for me was the cast. Every casting was on point for the main cast, and the few missteps weren't even that bad. I watched start to finish for the characters alone. The writting really took a nosedive after Netflix took over. Overall though, the passion from the community and the cast really makes you want to give this show more roses.

What I personally liked about the portrayal more than anything is that he was a likeable and sympathetic character somehow despite being a complete narcissist and psychopath in some ways and definitely a character that could believably have been the literal lord of Hell.

Shows get an early cancel because pay bonuses typically come into play at season three. That's why so many get a "tweak" at that point. It's all about keeping the payroll down.

Lesson for other creators.. never give up. Ask the public, because we can honestly tell you what we want. Shows are cancelled that should not be and other shows slog on that are a waste of time and money.

I would love to see Tom in a new medieval show where he's a king of sorts, I don't know why I just wanna see him in more stuff! Something more gritty and serious, all my favourite episodes from lucifer were the dramatic ones such as him going back to hell to help Cloe, the car scene where has on his way to hurt the sinner man. Love the show mate, hopefully you come to comic-con in Australia some time!

That Fox cancellation was BRUTAL, after the most epic season 3 finale cliffhanger. I had started out just watching the show to fill time on Mondays as a bit of procedural mindless fluff, but it quickly became such fun that I kept watching and got more interested as the longer arcs began to take shape. By season 2 it had become my favorite current airing show and I looked forward to it every week for my fix. And even before season 3 began it was actually genuine must-see appointment TV where I was making sure to catch each episode as it aired (something that hadn't even been a thing for me for years once I found the streaming sites and knew I could find anything whenever I wanted online). It was my weekly retreat and reward that I found joy in. The S3 finale, though, was the ultimate peak of "OMG WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NOW??" emotional investment that I have ever experienced with a TV show. As a viewer was just blown away by the plot actually going there where most stories would not dare to take away the ever-present tease that drives the tension. I was 100% invested and was going to be counting the days until the show returned, and then from the ultimate height of curiosity, almost IMMEDIATELY after seeing it, my soul was crushed with news of the cancellation and it was actually so devastating that I wailed at the news... There was rage and panic that I would never get the answer to that question and I took to Facebook to vent that frustration and cuss out Fox. That would have been the most agonizing place for that story to be left without resolution; I was SO upset! I have never hated a tv exec as much as I loathed the ones at Fox that day. I cursed them openly and viciously and vowed never to watch Fox again after that. I would have gone half out of my mind being left at that point in the show. It felt like personal cruelty from them and made it clear they had no care for anything but greed. I understood why they were so hated for "ruining" Firefly too. I had no idea how to cope or mourn the loss of the end of that story. The idea of being left without knowing was so torturous I even thought about writing to the creators to ask how it would have gone. Despite not daring to hope it could be done, I joined in the hashtag SaveLucifer because I needed to know. Then Netflix came through and did it. When I confirmed it wasn't a joke or a hoax and found out they actually picked up the show, Netflix earned hero status from me and I am forever grateful. I love tv, and though sometimes have been sad that a shows run comes to an end, it's usually not at such a climactic point in the story, and mtbh most That was the only show cancellation that really hurt me, and getting two more on top of the fourth season that almost wasn't was just a bonus gift. I was able to make peace with letting it go that way, but I feel like I would have been legit traumatized and psychologically damaged by not having closure after that season 3 reveal. Thank goodness I don't have to be left wondering what might have been.

I remember there was a petition i signed it, probably the only petition I signed on that site that actually won! also made me glad my sibling lets me use their netflix! it's ironic cause i'd just got into lucifer a month before they announced the cancellation and I was coming up near the last 4 episodes of the of Season 3 when they announced S4 would be on netflix... it took me a while I didn't watch it straight away but I was there for every episode after that up to the end of the show! I wonder if theres a possibility of a spin off some characters I feel were left open for that I kinda wanna see a show of Maizikeen! and maybe a lucifer guest appearance, sort of like how the charismatic john barrowman would make appearances on doctor who and visa versa!
