In this short video Brendan Ferris of Kells Sheep Centre shows how Border Collies are used to herd sheep. Brendan and his dogs are not only very skilled at what they do they are also very amusing!
I took this video while on vacation in Kerry Ireland this past August.

To think that the slow domestication of these species took milleniums, but it got to a point where man's whistling controls his source of food. An incredible symbiosis between man and animals, an expression of his extended phenotype in a different species. It provoques some very deep thoughts.

The sheep are honestly thrilled to have the border collie there as they do not (as long as they have a typically well-behaved and trained collie) *really* believe the collie will kill them unless something dramatic happens. They know the border collie is there to protect and guide them. They trust the collies. The sheep are “smiling” just as this man notes as they are also in a situation for which they’ve been prepared by many centuries of training and domestication. It’s beautiful to see them work together in such beautiful harmony.

Many years ago when I was about 10 years old we had a Collie and a pet rabbit. The rabbit was never able to leave our yard because the dog would not only herd it but also pick it up by the back of his neck and redeposit it in the middle of the yard. We never taught the dog how to do this. It is an instinct they are born with. Now, some 70 years later, I can still see it like it was yesterday. My wife and I visited Ireland about 3 years ago and were treated to a similar display of herding dogs. It was the highlight of our trip.

My partners border collie will nudge the kids if we call their name. Or if I call Storm, another dog of his, Mac will run over to herd her too. His name is Mackoosia and he's very smart. He's a tri colour border collie. Storm is a Australian Shepherd. They're both were rescues at one year of age that were going to be put down. Mac because his owner was tired of him now that he wasn't a puppy any longer and Storms owner was gong to put her down because she was over size for her breed. Those two people should be put down for being poor excuses of human beings. Mac and Storm are now 11 years old, happy with their human daddy and loved by all who know them.

So when people shout their dogs from a distance, or say “they can’t hear me” we know all know that’s BS. Haha. They can hear you they’re just not listening to you, big difference! Shows people how giving a dog a job (something to do with their minds as well as their bodies), giving them direction, teaching them things, and sharing instinctual experiences, is a very important part of what creates that incredible relationship between human and dog, and makes them actually want to listen to you. Fricking beautiful!

I knew a border collie who desperately wanted to be trained doing something that when I used to do dog daycare he would literally run in a giant circle non stop all day only to rest for food and water. He would run so much sometimes, he would actually bust his pads and we would have to ointment them and let him rest. These dogs literally love this.

Sheep are amazingly clueless. The dogs are herding and stopping and returning in order to have the "dumb" sheep, plain stock, go where needed. Also, this was a demonstration, and in normal circumstances you would see the fine execution of the collies' training. In addition, here on the Canadian prairies the collies protect the sheep from coyotes and loose dogs who are hungry. The collie will generally just move and closely group the sheep away from the danger, fighting only if necessary. The sudden movement of resting sheep at night can be an alert for the owner to get out there with the shotgun. Good fencing, lighting, good dogs and lead are required equipment. Sure miss those days. I'm pretty old now and have to be satisfied with chihuahas for dogs. Collies are very intelligent, speak with their eyes and have great empathy for anything sick or injured.

It's amazing that we have taken wolves and domesticated them, and used some of their natural instincts to breed work dogs that can do this kind of thing. The way they move the sheep is exactly how pack animals will harass a herd in order to wear them down and separate out their prey to make a kill, only the behavior has been modified with breeding and training to be useful to shepherds. Simply amazing!
@Willseph
@Willseph 4 жыл бұрын
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_the_domestic_dog#Dog_and_human_convergent_evolution It's even more amazing than that, there is good reason to believe that humans adopted some of the behaviors of wolves, which are notable for their extreme dedication to their nuclear family. Alpha males are actually just fathers, who mate for life with the alpha female, and the pack consists of their children. It is partially for these reasons that wolves also share meat and work together better than almost any other predator. Most primates are comparatively promiscuous, so it would make sense that humans evolved to better understand how loyalty and teamwork can benefit the entire group due to their interaction with canids. Keep in mind that dogs were easily the first domesticated animal, over 15000 years ago. Truly man's best friend

It goes way beyond that even . It was a symbiotic relationship, so much so we have each had an effect the each others evolution. Its fair to say we would not be the humans we are if it was not for our relationship with dogs. They made hunting easier so allowing consevation of much rationed energy in the hunter gatherer tribes and allowed grater access to resoures which enabled both our brains to evolve and grow while also utilising and enableing both our cognitive abilities through the shared nutrients and safety which each brought to the other. Also fun, but telling factoid, dogs have the ability to understand what me mean when we point to somthing, this is an ability that not even other primates have.

these are a Scottish breed of dog, a Scottish breed of sheep, being used to make wool for a Scottish material, tweed, so is it Ireland you want to visit?

Of course they are BC's... they are the most intelligent of all breeds... Toby the first BC who kept me company lived to be 17... Flipflop, the second is only three years old.. he is incredibly bright and agile... I pray he keeps me company as long as Toby did... Wonderful camera work, Thanks for posting!!!

As an owner of a working border collie I can honestly say these are the most amazing dogs. Its amazing how deeply imprinted the instinct to move livestock is in this breed. From my own experience with my dog they are truly happiest when working livestock. But if you have a dog with that strong of a drive it can be a problem if you dont have an outlet for the dog to express that drive. Sometimes it can be redirected into other activities such as frisbee or obstacle courses but not always. My dog for example has no desire to fetch a ball or frisbee but when i start to put on my muck boots she knows i am going to the barn and she is excited beyond belief and would choose working stock over eating a steak everytime.

my mum bred borders (checking bloodlines etc.. i remember her going through the paperwork) but my most favourite absolute favourite pup was Jess. She was the best. I miss her even after all these years. She would turn on a two cent coin for me and she was only not even 8 weeks. I absolutely cried when she was sold .. to some farmer out west nsw i think.

I was at a large park with my little white fluffy dog. When it was time for me to go, I had called my dog, and he came to me, but the collie he was playing with didn't want him to go, so he started circling and trying to herd my dog away from the gate and back to the middle of the park. It was too funny, and completely instinctual. BTW, my dog's name is Lamb. ;)
