BRILLIANT Yakovlev Yak-11 PNP RC aircraft (Яковлев Як-11; "Moose") : ESSENTIAL RC FLIGHT TEST
AVAILABLE HERE: bit.ly/taftYak11
Another really nice radio controlled warbird from TAFT Hobby which would be perfect as a 2nd RC aeroplane for an intermediate RC pilot. In PNP form this Yak-11 takes very little time to assemble and has some nice scale features. You can also get a KIT version without electronics if you want to choose your own power and radio system. We noticed that the scheme is very well applied on this fairly large foamie due to the EPO foam being so dense. Great features include the steerable tail wheel for accurate ground control, split flaps for slow landings, the magnetic pitot tube and the pilot in the cockpit.
The power system runs off a 6S pack. We used a 6S5000 pack and it balanced out perfectly although we would advise a forward CG for initial flights although ensure you taxi slowly with maximum up elevator to avoid nosing over and breaking the prop. The power gets this warbird in the air quickly, almost quickly for it to take off in a scale way. Build up the power progressively to allow the tail to pickup before applying elevator and getting fully airborne.
In the air the power to weight ratio is perfect. This warbird can fly slow and stable with flaps or fast for scorching passes down the strip. This was the maiden flight so Jason kept things simple with some fast axial loops and a loop but we're looking forward to flying some nice scale aerobatics in the future.
Filmed by Dom for the 'Essential RC' KZfaq channel using the Panasonic AG-UX180 Pro 4K camcorder. Jason flies the TAFT Fly Baby.

You guys completely sold me. Great vid. I used to fly back in the 90s. Both RC and a Cessna 172. RC by far the hardest. Crashed a lot (never in the Cessna) and finally got good. Then I got married. All flying came to a grinding halt. I'm now retired. It's time to crash and learn to fly again. This one looks like a fine first plane to destroy for me!

The Horizon Hobbies apprentice, which is a foamie electric with stabilizer is a better choice for first plane. Easy to fix if it crashes and very stabile in flight. This Yak looks like a good 2nd or 3rd plane; once you gain basic flight skills. Most guys also train on a Real Flight simulator. Available for around $200. Good at developing muscle memory on the sticks. Makes transition to a real RC plane much more easy. Its a wonderful hobby, especially after you get through the first hiccups. Happy flying.

@@gregohare2406 He's not a first time RC pilot so the HH Apprentice would be UTTERLY boring after 10 minutes of flying. He could fly this Yak on a buddy box or get someone to take off and land for him while he gets back his skills and then explore its aerobatic potential.

Essential RC After 20 years, I would leave that decision up to him. Yak doesn’t look like a good first plane. Doesn’t hurt to know of other options.

Cool video. It shows how the model has great power and speed, and also showed that I shouldn't be (too..)scared of flying this - for me - biggest plane I had yet flown, and the first with retracts. This plane is awesome for the money. And for half (or less) of the price for comparable sized models from other RC companies..(which, make no mistake..., are no better, at all...) This plane looks great and flies amazingly well.

Seems to be the version which was sold by Horizon Hobby and Lindinger under the label "Staufenbiel". My suspicion would be, that it is made by FMS, hence the good quality 😉

Yep it is a well made great looking aeroplane and paint job, that's why I bought one. My kit brand is Staufenbiel. It sounds good and thanks for CofG info. Shame it doesn't have proper sprung oleo struts to match the large grass friendly but rock hard wheels. Guessing it won't take long to see how well the struts handle shakin like a dog shittin razor blades! Better book a dental appointment for the pilot to get all their fillings put back in.

Taft Hobby have made a great looking scale aircraft and need to make some small adjustments to make this a very popular model. Will not handle rough strips and until you work out CofG it will spend some time inverted on take off. Struts are useless on anything but finished surfaces and will shake like a dog shitting razor blades on anything else!

Eloquently put sir. I concur. Needs some work but otherwise is a fine model off a well prepared grass strip.

I have the airplane but I am afraid of the actual best CG. The manual calls fo 110-115mm from the root at the fuselage. The wing kicks forward a lot at the root. They seem to include that in the manual. WHERE DID YOU ACTUALLY PLACE THE BEST CG? I am anxiously wating your answer!!! Great video.
@EssentialRC
@EssentialRC 4 жыл бұрын
115mm according to the experienced Avanti pilot I've been talking to about the conversion.

@@EssentialRC My confusion is from WHERE on the leading edge do you measure? All the way to the front of the dummy air intake or a projected line along the leading edge. If from all the way to the air intake, then an enormous amount of weight will have to be added to the nose. Still afraid to fly it until I get this question sorted out. IN ADDITION, the pilot in this video points to the line on the wing as the CG point. This is well aft of 115mm if measured from the air intake on the wing.

@@sailr Go off the picture in the manual. I had to add 3oz of nose weight to mine. Flew great at 110mm for a short while. I lost mine on maiden, the motor mount let loose. Not the screws the actual mount. After further inspection it seems someone on the assembly line forgot to put glue on it. Motor pulled right out on a full throttle pass......
