About this Album:
Haydn’s compositions for piano trio and his pioneering work in the genre of the string quartet are well known. However, he also left a considerable body of work for chamber ensembles that do not fit comfortably within the sonata, trio or quartet category. This release explores some of these early and fascinating hybrids.
One thing all the works have in common is that the piano is the centre of attention. Written for Count Morzin the Divertimento Hob.XIV:1 adds two horns to the traditional piano trio. They have some virtuosic passages, similar in fact to the contemporaneous Symphonies Nos. 31 and 72. Presumably these parts were written with particular horn players in mind. and Count Morzin’s orchestra possessed some of the greatest horn virtuosi of the time.

Haydn was pretty good. It's a pity that most people don't realise that. I have become increasingly fond of his magnificent work as I grow older. Likewise, Händel. Both have been overshadowed by Mozart and J.S. Bach but I revere all four of these musical geniuses and pioneers.

Haydn was an employee of Nikolaus I, Prince Esterházy, a music lover and amateur bariton player for whom Haydn wrote many of this chamber music where the piano was the central instrument. The set of compositions that are included: Concertinos, Divertimentos and Quintets, whose music is of an incomparable grace, elegance and delicacy that only a genial and fabulous musician could have composed. The chamber music had more intimate characteristics and was performed by a reduced number of musicians, invariably without a personalized conductor, the group being directed by one of the players in the group. Câmara Music was called “music for friends”. This set of pieces composed by Haydn is amazing, transmitting us an indescribable sensibility, joviality and joy that only a fantastic musician like Haydn was able to write. The interpretation of the musical pieces is superb. Viva Haydn and his incomparable music. Thanks for this recording that gives us moments of indescribable pleasure.

A marvel...a sublime gem...Franz Joseph Haydn was from the Classical period. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the piano trio. The true spirit of the Classical period: transparent, free of fear, serenity; like PLATO says 'Music must be felt, it penetrates the soul and cleans it!

Haydn is never less than a highly professional and thoughtful composer whose standards almost never drop; his unique compositional fingerprints are quite easy to identify with a little experience. Haydn is a genuine ‘A’ list composer specifically because his music is NOT anonymous. That said, in the great scheme of things, these attractive little pieces here are little more than shavings on the master-carpenter’s workshop floor, but the performances are superb in this important recording.

When I was a younger man (cuando era joven) I spent much time with Beethoven, Bach, and daring novels. Now I am older, and find Hawthorne enchanting, Haydn intriguing, and a growing awareness of the need for kindness in how I live my life. Not a bad turn at any point.

I had an architecter major friend when I went to UWMil. who loved Haydn and Mozart over Bach and Beethoven. I often happen to wonder what kind of music collection he has.

@@lewisschultz1241 As merely 1 architect, one goes to Bach & Beethoven (& Stravinsky, Handel, Thelonious Monk, Muddy Waters...) for the concept of the design; one has Mozart & Haydn (& Corelli, Palestrina, Tallis, Steely Dan, Mose Allison...) to listen to while cranking out the details & spec.'s. Go figure.

@@busodelor1977 Haydn was born in Austria and "Hofcomposer" from Fürst Esterhazy, who paid and give him a house and all he need for his life. here where so mutch great composers in Vienna becouse Habsburg Imperators paid and honourd them well. Vienna was a town full of musik and art in that time.

If I may: Haydn as the Stan Musial of composers, overshadowed by Beethoven (Ted Williams), Bach (Babe Ruth), Mozart (Ty Cobb), Handel (Joe DiMaggio), Schubert (Willie Mays), Brahms (Hank Aaron), Chopin (MIckey Mantle), etc. Just a playful analogy, that amused me to think of.... Not sure which part of the world you’re writing from, but it must be pretty much the only place Haydn has been ‘...relegated to the shadows’. Haydn is pretty much universally accepted as a genuine ‘A’ list composer, and with the publication of complete Urtext editions, the recordings of almost all his music in both original instrument and modern performances, along with about 75 years worth of scholarly work, and new biographies, his true stature and genius today is better understood than at any time since his death in 1809.

Eric The Roman yes he is quite a pleasant surprise to the virgin ear (of *his* work ) I heard each and every one these lovely pieces for the last 20 years ONLY on harpsichord and - until 20 mins ago had no idea this was a thing with strings and piano ; Actually my KZfaq “find” of the week. . Haydn actually has some delightful and interesting choral works ( when you have like 8 or 9 mins to spare check out his “Te Deum”- that should even suffice for the ‘non-classical’ and baroque aficionado like myself PS. The year was 1998I had just turned 18 less than six months previous, and was fresh out of boot camp when I purchased my first Haydn CD. I had played some junior to senior level Haydn on piano but the collection of the “divertimenti and concertini”. Contained on that cd ‘cemented’ him as one of the (my) greats along with (Bach, Chopin, Mozart, Vivaldi, Handel, Scarlatti, Ravel) which is lofty company to be associated with.

¡Ah Joseph Haydn! Otro de los compositores preferidos de mi viejo maestro, aquél zapatero remendón culto que disfrutaba su música. El lugar, un pequeño taller donde se reparaban diversas anomalías del calzado de los clientes, ubicado en una calle de rompe y rasga del barrio bravo de Tacuba, en la Ciudad de México, en los 70s del siglo pasado. Bonitos recuerdos me quedan del lugar y momento con mis primeras experiencias para ganarme el sustento; primero como aprendiz, luego ayudante de un hombre sabio, que además de conocer su oficio, conocía y disfrutaba las cosas buenas de la vida. Él escuchaba la estación de radio XLA, el lugar de la buena música y me recomendaba con frecuencia, no distanciarme de esa maravilla de sonidos que alimentan el alma. ¡Gracias maestro por tus enseñanzas y ejemplos de vida que me dejaste! ...

En este momento, Sr. Rivas no sé qué me parece más hermoso si sus recuerdos y expresiones o la música de mi amado (mi bienamado) Haydn. En alguna forma me sucedió algo parecido a lo que vd nos dice. Wonderful collection! My acquaintance with Haydn is mostly through the symphonies, but he was soooooooo good at so many forms besides the symphonic that it's a pleasure and a joy to listen to whatever he wrote. Thank you for posting these - they're balm for my ears!

Dear Brilliant Classics, Good Afternoon From Mumbai, India. Many Thanks For This Fine Upload Of Haydn's Chamber Music intrinsically connected to the Piano. It is so tuneful that I feel I am in Heaven already surrounded by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven as company. Franz Joseph Haydn composed a lot of awesome stuff. What is really heavenly to listen to are His Complete Piano Trios Performed by the Van Swieten Trio as well as his Excellent Piano Concertos, and last but not the least -- His Piano Sonatas which are a joy for me to listen to specially when cooking. Jeno Jando does a splendid job playing Haydn's Complete Piano Sonatas. Bart Van Oort who is the lead pianist for the Van Swieten Trio in Holland does a splendid job in the performance of Haydn's Complete Piano Trios. Haydn's Complete Piano Trios are really what Chamber Music is all about and it is certainly in my book -- Chamber Music at its best. Haydn's Chamber Music is really to die for. One should really imagine what life was in Austria or Germany in the 1700's where these Composers were from and how amidst all the difficulties of life they composed such Joyful and Heavenly Music. I tweeted about this latest upload at my twitter handle as well as the previous one namely the Epic Instrumental Music of Fasch. I strongly recommend listening to Haydn's Chamber Music if one wants to end their life because of a broken heart or because of Family Problems, Haydn's Chamber Music uplifts the Human Soul and Human Heart to an unbelievable degree. Finally, Brilliant Classics is my Go to You Tube Channel specially with regard to Classical Music and Baroque Music. Their Videos are of the highest quality with the best acoustics ever. If anyone loves Haydn's Symphonies in particular they should listen to Haydn's Complete Paris Symphonies and London Symphonies in particular. See U tomorrow friends.

Both of those are gems! I was pleasantly surprised by the Paris Symphonies. Although I recommend listening to Joseph Haydn / Symphony No. 84 in E-flat major "In Nomine Domini" (Kuijken), the tempo and style is more to my liking than the one in the large recording (Haydn's Complete Paris Symphonies).

If you’re missing the drama, you’re looking in the wrong place; try looking at the dramatic development of cells and motifs in Haydn, and the tonal journeys on which he takes these fragments - it’s all very exciting; Beethoven does pretty much the same thing!

@@elaineblackhurst1509 Absolutely, agree, and so did Mozart but Mozart always digs deepest in to most personal feelings that one recalls again and again while Beethoven’s and Haydn’s…“cough”…one not likely to recall next day. { and we don't even scratch the idiosyncratic nature of Mozart that delivers drama through opera arias or sacral works such as Requiem}

Mozart had immense respect for Haydn .....Beethoven less so ....but realised the error later in life .....Haydn is as essential as any of these composers ....and more so

poplife123 Beethoven’s issue with Haydn was that when he arrived in Vienna in 1792, he expected to take over from him as the ‘greatest living composer’. The problem was that Haydn carried on for about another ten years producing a string of works that kept him the centre of attention, works in almost all forms - symphonies, the trumpet concerto, string quartets, piano sonatas, and two oratorios for example; it rather put the young Beethoven in the shade, not a place from where he was going to be sending off pleasantries to anyone. In short; there was more than a touch of envy and jealousy, especially after the spectacular success of Haydn’s two long visits to England which had in effect made him an international superstar. Mozart had obligingly died in 1791 so was not a problem, neither was Haydn after he in effect retired from about 1803. Beethoven’s time duly came, and once Haydn had retired, so to did Beethoven’s sometimes sour and tetchy comments; whilst he owed much to his two immediate predecessors, his debt to Haydn was rather greater than he usually cared to admit.
