Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Artist: Kristóf Baráti (violin)
Bach may well be one of the most widely acknowledged master composers of all time, but that only serves to make each performer’s interpretation of his work all the more challenging and distinctive: each musician must both do justice to the composer’s intention, making a decision as to the best way of conveying that within the music which is not fixed, and at the same time leave their own mark on the performance. This is especially true for these Sonatas and Partitas given the variety of styles in which such Baroque masterworks have been performed, ranging from the freely romantic to the strictly precise, and the technical challenge posed by these complex pieces for a single instrument.
The works in this collection are something of an enigma, not only because of the uncertainty surrounding the circumstances and date of their composition, but, more crucially, because of the way in which they stretch the capacity for polyphony of a single violin beyond its physical limit. It is as though Bach had written for a full ensemble of instruments - but on a single staff. Modern musicians have even speculated as to the possible existence of a special bow with which an exact performance of the music might have been achieved in Bach’s day. The music is no less rich for all of this, however: on the contrary, the harmonic complexity of these pieces is at once captivating and beautiful; the implied but absent notes are thrillingly suggestive; and the multiplicity of voices leaves the listener marvelling at Bach’s compositional vision and the performer’s ability.
This accomplished musical feat is performed by Kristóf Baráti, a Hungarian violinist who has worked with an astonishing number of world-famous orchestras and conductors. Baráti plays a 1703 Stradivarius violin, and one can sense this echo of the era of the pieces as much as one can his intense emotional involvement with the music.

his approach to chords is unique.... he applies enough weight to grab 3 strings at once which creates a more percussive sound, but his violin does not scratch. in most interpretations, the chords are rolled slightly slower to avoid the scratch that often results from being too aggressive.

Bach is the foundation of all music styles that followed his time; stemming from his outcoming to the classical, romantic, modern, and contemporary jazz. Everybody that loves music should linger on Bach. Mind you, once you go under this wonderful composer you will never be out of his grip. His solo violin partitas will glue to your taste and will never leave you. The present post of Bach's violin partitas for solo violin, as interpreted by Kristóf Baráti, renders a most transparent Bach, untinted by unduly affectate performance. Thanks a lot for this post!

Thanks Brilliant Classics for uploading this nice rendering of the sonatas and partitas. The Hungarian violinist Kristóf Baráti, whom I did not know, gives a convincing, emotional, attractive version of this classic work. His violin playing is warm, assured and musical. Being a Hungarian, he shares the deeply emotional and singing soul of this noble people. He is still young (41) and has had a notable career in Hungary.

Today, violinists are two a penny, don't you ever believe it, if you learn to play one scale, that does not make you a virtuoso, I actually have a English heritage, in Nottingham 1967 I was naturalised, nationalised, and who knows whatised, one of my daughter, than five years old, wanted to learn ballet, but had not the personal pursuit which ballet deminded, so, she decided to learn to play the Violin, since she now hadsome Hungarian blood in her, I thought, that was the next best thing. However, by now sge cost me some money in tutorial, she and me agreed upon me bying the best tutorial, which I have purchased for her. Six month past, and I asked; A...., how your study goes, she said; I finished the book, I thought, all three years, she insisted with a yes, but she could not play a scale, not even in C major! Than I realised that the mastery of any instrument, take discipline, and this you have to dish it out to your self, and next to this; practice, practice, and more practice, till the day you die! Oh, I have falen into my own trap of self expectation, I, with the Piano, I was 18-years of age that time, believing that in two years I will be a concert pianist, alas, I learned that dedication is not enough, you need the blessing of talent from above, today, at 82-years of age, I am happy to listen to others performances, rather than that of my own! Oh, I am not complaining, I have made a first class engineer, even today, I can make wonders to come true on a Lathe! Metal work, of cause!

Bach was a very skilled string player as well as keyboardist. When playing in an ensemble he often preferred to play the viola da gamba, so that he could be in the thick of the harmony. His skill on the violin is of course very evident in these miraculous sonatas and partitas. To hear them played this beautifully and on such a gorgeous instrument is sheer heaven. Bach's music will live on as long as our civilization, and actually beyond because some of his music (performed by Glenn Gould) is embedded in a gold disc sent out with the space explorer Voyager I. If some far-gone alien civilization finds and hears this music they will be very impressed, no doubt. Assuming their hearing is the same as ours, of course.

Marvelously played ! A little more "classical' interpretation than "baroque", but still wonderfully played !

Can't more people do violin solo music? Maybe with a simple cello melody in the background, but not distracting. It's perfect to read a story where the mood changes a lot, since the beauty of such music can be interpreted in multiple ways. It also isn't as ear blasting as all that epic stuff.
