This is an updated version on how to bring back the old User Interface from Steam, after the latest update steam removed the option to use the older UI but with this method you can still do it.

I love how an old UI runs better than a newer interface, you just can't make this up. I run DSR upscaling for filmmaking and the new UI just keeps bugging for no reasons at all, constantly tabbing me out of the game. Valve refuse to fix it and they remove the old way of getting the old UI anyway.. Thank you so muuch for your tutorial man, it was concise and easy to understand. Cheers

unfortunately no longer works as of today 9/21/2023 while you have the custom .cfg file in your steam folder you'll no longer be able to get online

TYVM. Works great. New ui was the issue of stuttering in some games, and while opened/closed steam, was really slow. I really don't know what's wrong with Valve some times. Did they even tested things before releasing it? Anyways. Great job, and i hope it going to keep working in the future.

I gave the new interface another go... again! Still steals focus loading up and exiting the client, and still to this day the Steam window randomly gets stuck and is unmovable until Steam is restarted "how has this gone unfixed for this long!" I really do dislike how they must have someone on their team who looks out for these kind of fixes and removes the ability to use them :( I've gone back to using this excellent workaround as like many others really dislike the direction Steam is going. Keep up the good work bud as you are helping others like me get around this forceful “beta” update.

Not sure if anyone else has run into this today, but my friends window will no longer connect online. It worked yesterday without issue and I'm wondering if valve has changed something to where the old UI can no longer use their friends list. The store and library still works without issue, it's just the friends list. Edit: Looking at the recent comments has lead me to believe Valve did change something... sad...

A better and less "permanent" option to editing the registry is to put your custom shortcut in the Windows "startup" folder, anything in that folder is started when Windows starts with any launch options included. Can easily be edited or deleted later. Fastest way to open the startup folder is Win+R and type "shell:startup" minus quotes.

yes Steam changed something in theyr side something that make the old Friend UI something denied in theyr side when you try to connect Friend Pannel to your account I have no further information trying to know if that new protocol or new certification problems but its sems to be that theyr renewed or removed the certification about Friend UI pannel of the Old Steam version (May 2023) anyways you can still use this : add in shortcut of steam this -nofriendsui To bring back the old Friend UI and this one working !!

friend network is disabled by steam on older versions. Probably because steam wants to force us to use their new shit ui. So say goodbye to this old UI.

UPDATE - JANUARY 29TH, 2024: This has worked for me, HOWEVER, the friend list now appears as "unreachable". This is not an issue for me, I just wanted the old layout for the controllers configs, however, be aware if all of your firends are, or you use a lot, the friend list on steam.

I followed this step by step but I'm still stuck with the new UI even went into the registry editor made the changes and restarted the computer and I can't get back to the old UI. I need it so I can use the old Controller configuration setup UI the new one lost over half of the features that made PC gaming on controller possible even on non-controller supported games because DS4windows sucks compared to the old steam controller layout setup.

so i tried to do this on windows 10 and it didnt work whenever i started steam after doing the first step and then did the 2nd step and put the steam.cfg file in the folder it said steam could not connect to network please try again later even though my wifi was perfectly fine edit: nevermind this did work very well and im so happy it did it turns out i had done the steps wrong but im glad i tried again thank you so so much this is great

it works, however i'd like to point out 2 downsides of this. 1. friends list & online status does not work anymore 2. you can still see the same library ui as the newest client so honestly it's not that much of a bring back steam old ui.... good video anyways, but sadly its not what i expected

Yep steam changed something in theyr side and that maked that bad outage result But you can try this : add in shortcut of steam this : -nofriendsui And Friend UI can be back and used but that the Old Friend UI

You can have multiple installations of steam on different folders, but you can only run one at the time. Is not possible to run multiple instances on one pc

Yes because currently I can tell you that it doesn't work and that means we have to do all that just because they released an incomplete interface that I could describe as "early access". They really didn't manage Steam at this point; they put a lot of people in trouble.@@EnriqueCal

Seems if you have clientui and steamui folders in your root this workaround will do nothing and it'll read the new ui from those folders. If I delete them, "steamwebhelper.exe, a critical steam component, is not responding.
