This video shows how to bring soil back to life after soil solarization. Soil solarization is a non-chemical method of controlling pests and pathogens in soil. It involves:
Watering a patch of soil
Covering the soil with clear plastic
Allowing the sun's radiant energy to be trapped in the soil, heating the upper levels
The heat produced pasteurizes the soil, killing plant pathogens and insect and weed pests. However, it leaves intact populations of many beneficial soil microorganisms that promote plant growth.

I really don’t talk about the last because I would have to answer the same questions about pathogens a million times. If you are doing thermal composting the correct way 150 degrees the good bacteria will dominate and you’ll end up with a earthy smell to the compost. No one questions where the urea in other organic fertilizer comes from. I literally have gallons of it. lol and it’s FREE! 🤫

Possible options: Did you till the soil prior to covering with the clear plastic? If so, this would eliminate tillage other than enough to facilitate good soil to seed contact. My understanding of solarization is that the weed seeds and pathogens are killed in the top1 to 3 inches. Adding and or covering with a 2 to 4 inch layer of compost will not only add nutrients but also beneficial micros and bacteria to the garden bed. You can then plant your seeds in this medium!
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comments. What you are doing with the 3 inches is suppressing weeds but that will not kill pathogens nor insects that overwinter like grubs and vine borers. It's not effective against root knot nematodes. Blacking out the soil can have similar effects of solarization but in general, clear plastic is most effective because it’s the heat rays of the sun that passes through the clear plastic becoming trapped that heats up the soil sometimes as deep as 10 inches below the surface. Even black plastic is less effective because it’s reflective and in most cases will absorbs some of the heat, clear plastic is better at trapping the heat. This video is a follow up to a short I did where the #1 question was, "What do do after you solarize the soil"? kzfaq.info6lObQdXO2UE

So as fall comes in I am now working on beautifying my garden. Things are healthy but I also want it so look great. I did not solarize my bed but what I did was put compost and old plants , I watered it in , fertilized it and put cardboard over it so it can break down and be ready for spring.

@growingoutthebox 7 ай бұрын
Hey Faith. Blessings to you. I see that last video got a few peoples attention. lol 😆. I definitely think it is a to mention. To your message…. When you say you put old plants in the bed do you mean as in growing. If so that would be a good idea. I have been conditioning my garden organically since starting 2020/21. 2024 I’m going to try a more biological growing method. I’m testing it out in the Fall garden which is more nitrogen demanding because of the leafy greens. Now that I have a decent idea of how to grow organically I want to try growing using only the biology in the soil. Home made Compost and compost tea. Going to be bringing the microscope 🔬 out. Thanks for the mention in your video. The funny part was when you said, “the big KZfaq channels, 20, 30,000 and up” I was like, “am I a big channel”? lol 😂 I didn’t know that I was supposed to stop watching other people’s videos and sitting in their chats as a moderator…. @@FoodbyFaith Personally, I like the garden conversations. You should do more. Oh, please give full replies when people comment. Try it for a few videos consistently and check your analytics. Engagement is worth more than a view. I try to pass on information as I weave through what I believe is working and what is not for growing the channel. Don’t just post. Be intentional about what you want to consistently represent on your channel. Go back and look at your peaks in your videos analytics. Those are your clues. I’m not the best gardener by far but I study the analytics and make videos based on those clues. You gave me for too much credit in your description of me but what that did is confirm why the channel is growing. Entertaining or information and again, consistency. I’m telling you that it is worth your investment. Are you a gardener, cook or crafts. You thin your audience when you do too many things and KZfaq doesn’t choose who to share your content with. This will be interesting to follow. What do you plan to plant in that bed once the Peas finish their job? TYFS Keith
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 8 ай бұрын
Hey Mark. After the winter takes out the peas I'll just let the roots stay in place and the plants will become mulch to decompose over the remaining winter month. Spring plant more of the same little marvel sweet peas followed by black bush beans. The next 3 nights will be 31, 32, 34 degrees so I did a harvest today of the plants that might not make it. The 6 foot arbor to the right of the bed worked absolutely like I imagined. I have 7 foot snap peas growing up all sides. I wrapped it with a blanket and created a greenhouse with a large gaylord bag that fit perfectly around the raised bed. Couldn't have planned it any better. I have 3 more for the other 3 beds. I'll grow winter squash vertically on all 4. I'm doing a series of videos this winter as permitted. Building that raised bed you asked me about with the corrugated metal, The arbor that I just mentioned and the trellis I built on the @nosstagarden raised bed.

Thank you Rose as always. The more I garden the more fascinated i am with how organic growing is accomplished. I am a heavy mulcher both summer and winter. I like to show what I do and the results. I like to know why.? I'm not sure about the chemicals in a tarp and I don't use weed block because I mulch heavy. I prefer cypress mulch because it builds mycelium fungi pretty fast which adds to the diversity of the soil. I Try to tip the balance of good bacteria and fungi over the bad and use the power of nature to encourage plant growth. Thanks again for the comment.

I thought black plastic worked better. I stand corrected, tfs😊.
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 7 ай бұрын
You can't solarize with black. Black plastic can have similar effects of solarization but in general, clear plastic is most effective because it’s the heat rays of the sun that passes through the clear plastic becoming trapped that heats up the soil sometimes as deep as 10 inches below the surface. Black is less effective because it’s reflective and in most cases will absorbs some of the heat, clear plastic is better at trapping the heat. 🤓

Great channel. I use black plastic. No light to germinate weed seeds.
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 3 ай бұрын
That's very effective in suppressing weeds but not quite solarization. There has to be wet soil with clear plastic to allow to sun rays to penetrate the soil.

I hear a lot of people say they use black plastic so I researched that before doing this video. Black works for suppressing weeds but that is not what solarization is.

Hey Lashus. I’m recording the freeze prep. My blueberries are full of blooms. Not sure how it’s going to go but I’m going to try and protect them. Dwarf bananas are going inside. I might have to sleep outside for bringing them in but they are going in!🤫

Outstanding education. I absolutely love it here. U have to be in good relationship with ur garden in order to garden organically. I’m collecting rotted pumpkins again this year and saving some for my compost bins. I collect bags of leaves. I use them to make leaf mold, loose leaves on my beds and ground, plastic bags full on top and around my peppers and fruit trees for winter insulation here in zone 7. A large portion of my mid-sized space is covered in woodchips. Recently got into JADAM. I have the ingredients for everything but got intimidated to make any inputs this spring/summer. I’ll try again to get up the courage this winter. Also…I’m a first year organic gardener. This content is not overwhelming or discouraging at all. It’s proof positive that it can be done and that harmony with nature is much easier than disharmonious forceful gardening.

I think some of you modern day gardeners are doing too much. And for someone who would just be starting out, would get overwhelmed & discouraged! And it doesn't have to be that way.🥴🌱🍃
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 7 ай бұрын
What I would say to that is you obviously have not viewed any of my content. What you call modern day gardener is learning to garden without using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. “Organic gardening”. The absolute oldest form of gardening techniques on the planet. What I won’t do is apologize for trying to learn and coexist with my native environment. Yes, that requires work which is what’s lacking in the pop up culture that wants everything preordered and delivered in a Amazon box. Believe it or not…. Some of us want to actually know better about what we are doing in our gardens.

@@growingouttheboxyou are 💯 right about your techniques what you are doing is actually traditional and older ways of growing food not using toxic man made synthetic fertilizers! When people say it’s discouraging what they really mean is that they are to LAZY to do the work of real traditional gardening/farming/homesteading so they cheat themselves and harm the environment by using quick fix toxic fertilizers made by men ! Keep teaching the organic way awesome

@@growingoutthebox I have no idea why I'm just now seeing your reply. And yes, I'll give you that about my watching your videos, because I've only seen a few, & my comment was based on THIS VIDEO alone. But I think it's ironic the answer you gave, because I also am an organic gardener, and have been gardening since I was a child, but started again in the 90's. So I can't help but know that GARDENING IS WORK. This "Solarizing the soil" then "putting Life back into it" as you say, and brewing "Compost Tea" is what I was talking about could be a little overwhelming for someone considering to start a garden. And you can filter water, if you don't want to use the water as is. But no offence to you. Happy Gardening! 🌱
