Interesting video. Can color grading work on flat images with low contrast or are they simply lost cause images?

Research additive and subtractive color grading. Also, you can add contrast before color grading as you should.

Emily, I understand the use of the color grading and color editing tool, but where I usually get lost is using levels and / or curves in addition. Can the color grading and editor tools can achieve the final result without the use of additional tools? Thanks.

Hi Luc! You can absolutely achieve a beautiful color grade without using levels & curves and vice versa. I would look at them all as just options to play with. Some images you might find you want to use all the tools and other images just one tool. I think it's good to try playing with them enough so you know what you can get out of each, but there's nothing wrong with sticking to just one method for color grading. Often times I'll stick to just my Color Balance tool because that's all the image needs :)

Is there anything you do better now, than when you first started your color grading work?

When I first started and for the majority of my career I was even more subtle than I am now. I lean into it a lot more now, but I still never want to cross that line of it feeling like too much or overdone. I also think I see a lot more now and feel more comfortable with color than ever before.
