I've watched hundreds of VW mechanics do builds and rebuilds, but I learned several things here that I didn't on their videos. Thank you for taking the time and effort to put this together!

VW buggys are pretty simple to work on a friend & me built a couple of these. I put bigger pistons, jugs, & lightened the flywheel on mine. My friend bought an adapter & put a 2300 Ford motor with extensive head work on his, he had the machine work done by a shop that built engines for stock cars. we couldn't get it to run right till we put a 600 cfm carb on it. we drove it on to the highway & a guy in a Z-28 couldn't get around us & he was trying hard too.

Dont use the paper gaskets. They rot and leave a gap between the cylinder and block. Add zinc to the oil for flat tappet cams. Motor sounds good

Aerokroil is your friend for breakdown spray. New jug kit and heads simplify redos. You moved up from a 50 hp to close to a 65 horse. It's fun to work on old vw's, solex carbs and all. Don't overlook the IRS tranny, throw out bearing to go soon. Fresh 90 weight oil and rear brake shoes, anti seize everything, cheap desert dog mud grips, go snort the tri mill exhaust and have fun!

This is awesome content, thanks showing me how to lap a valve and cylinder, stuff like this makes me feel way more confident in my mechanical abilities

Little comment on valve lapping. Colgate toothpaste works well if you don’t have proper compound. Also, I’ve freed locked up engines for years by filling with diesel, leaving for a week or so, then turning slowly with a long breaker bar until it’s free. Another tip for finding seal leaks on a running engine is to spray Pam cooking spray into the carb while engine is at about half throttle. Pam doesn’t burn and will blow out of the leak, showing you where it is. Just don’t use the buttery kind!

Nice ,, I have a rail buggy and an old Manx style fiberglass buggy ,, loads of simple fun ,, BTW you can bolt on as large as 88 mm pistons without doing any millwork to the block or heads ,, I used 87’s because they have thicker walls ,,, you should have loads of fun with it 😉👍

@@spankranchgarage its expensive to do from scratch as you need to reverse rotate the engine so a bunch of stuff needs to be changed but occasionally a used engine thats already been converted comes up for sale (usually a 95/110hp) for around $500

@Freedo70
@Freedo70 3 жыл бұрын
@@spankranchgarage a whole corvair drive line including a 4 spd trans and a 110hp engine can be grabbed for like $500 or buy a compete rotted car that may need some minor engine work to get running for $700 and get all the suspension and subframe stuff. if you are super interested i have some spares engines and a blown diff/trans that you can borrow for mock up purposes

I just bought a sand rail with the 1600cc VW engine and I know I need to replace the rear main seal. Only thing is, I'm not good at this kind of stuff. I think I've watched almost all your buggy vids but didn't see anything where you kinda walked through that process. Any recommendations on where I should start - learning process-wise? I do appreciate the detail you do provide. I think the more I work on my engine and go back and watch your videos, the more stuff will make sense. So much is over my head at the moment.
@spankranchgarage
@spankranchgarage 2 жыл бұрын
Just get into it! It’s a learning experience and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. The engine is pretty easy to remove from the rail. You will need to get the engine off and get behind the flywheel to do that seal

@@spankranchgarage I appreciate that, thank you. Admittedly, I am afraid of messing up, but I'll keep trying to learn and will always come back to your videos to pick up some more insight as I go. Thanks for the content. Seeing you work on your rail really inspired me.
