O-Train Line 1 (Stage 1) opened on September 14, 2019, and featured 13 stations from Blair in the east to Tunney’s Pasture in the west. The O-Train is quickly being expanded to add additional service coverage in the East, West and South of Ottawa, in a project called Stage 2 LRT. This video provides an overview of the Eastern Extension of O-Train Line 1, which will extend service East of Blair station to Trim Road in Orleans.
This line extension will be over 12km in length and add 5 stations to Line 1. An interesting particularity of this segment is that it will be located almost entirely in the highway median of regional road 174. As a result, access to and from the stations for passengers will be via highway overpasses or underpasses and pedestrian bridges. All 5 stations will be centre platform stations. Once completed, local bus routes will be realigned to directly serve the nearest O-Train station, providing a quick and convenient connection to the O-Train and the rest of the city.

@@drewzma6816 For North America, it is. But for a city in East Asia or Europe, Ottawa is quite large for how little infrastructure it has.

r u kidding?? we needed this for at least the past decade considering the vast geography of ottawa. and have over a million people in the ottawa-gatineau area makes it even more justifiable. I just wish they did a better job with this considering all the corruption behind this.

Most of the stations seem to be in the middle of the highway with no residential or commercial places around those stations as per the images. Is that the case? If so, would anyone want to take the train on this route? PS - I've not lived in Ottawa so not completely sure about how busy this route is

For Jeanne d’Arc and Convent Glen there is housing on both sides of the highway within a few minutes. They should be quite well served. Place d’Orleans has a shopping centre connected and residential a short walk away. Trim is much farther from most of the residential but there still is within some walking distance. Montreal has commercial nearby while residential is a bit farther out and most is not necessarily walkable. Overall the route is the same as it was when it was provided by bus except with the train the stations are in the median while the bus was on the highway off and on ramps. Most people will do less waking as they won’t be required to completely cross the highway overpass when using transit and can catch it in the middle.

It is also the main line in and out of Orleans. There is a bus line in the south but the majority of the passenger flow is in this corridor.

It’s also worth adding that, by modal use, Orleans as a whole is generally one of the areas of the city with the highest transit usage. Having a proper “collector” and we hope improved local buses should make the connection easier for more users.

@@RailFansCanada yeah, there should be good bus connectivity for people once they get out of the station, to go to any of the nearby places they want to.

I really hope all the bugs on stage 1 can somehow get ironed out. The system has such great potential if they can get the reliability up to a good level.

Since November 2021 it has had very good reliability and the past 2 storms this winter have not had any impact on the train service.

It is still below pre pandemic levels but that’s due to government workers still working from home or hybrid. That definitely has a big impact. But if I recall correctly it is around 70% pre pandemic levels.

@@RailFansCanada I never suffered through the apparent abundance of issues the train had when it first started as I didn't live in the city. Since I've moved to it in 2020 I've found it to be remarkably reliable. Actually, the only issues I've had were the repairs they did for a week or so last winter, and the water leak a couple days ago.

Trim is the most stupid setup because they wanted to save money on a bridge. They killed the Trim/174 intersection and potential for a proper highway interchange. And by detouring traffic to a new intersection just east of the Trim station, it also condems the line to never have "arriere gare" to store trains or light maintenance garage (or extend a few km to Rockland). They should have built the station just east of Trim, and build bridge for trim over the 174 and then build ramps from trim to 174; Trim would then remain connected on both sides of the 174 (allowing cyclists to reach the bike path that starts at Jeanne D'arc and former Trim (now Tweedle since it was cut off from Trim by the LRT). Another option would have been make the tracks go underground before Trim and put station just after Trim. this way, trim could have remained at ground level and would have allowed for future building of proper inerchange to highway. (this is now limited access road so should be classified as highway and definitely cyclist unfriendly). Like everthing in the Ottawa LRT, it si a question of a politician making a promise to privide a station at X and then not providing enough funding to do something right. Are the stations on Stage II back to original length are are they still truncated to save money as happened on Stage 1 (hence cabs are outside of platforms).

Might be a good idea to concentrate on fixing the train before extending the line.
