On my way back to work on my daughter's Grand Prix. I watched the entire video again to get ready for next week. Thanks again for the great videos, especially the schematic reading which is a whole thing all by itself. Quite different from electronic schematics.

You do a great job walking through the schematics. And as you mention in the video, if you look at your problems logically while working through the schematic it makes a lot of sense and becomes easier to follow/understand.

I've just got my first table since the 80s, it's a Williams Dealer's Choice and it seems to have even more in it that this one. Thanks for all the schematic interpretation, it is helping me get used to reading them and I need to because this"fully working" table has about 20 minor faults and every major component has at least one fault. I wish I was in the USA where there seem to be some great repair people :)

This is a really helpful video. I also rediscovered the book "Introduction to Coin Operated Games" by Williams, I downloaded a PDF quite a while back. It has a very good section explaining schematics and their symbols on pages 48 to 55. In particular, I find the make/break switch symbol confusing on the schematics and it is explained in the book. EM schematics are quite challenging and unfortunately experience with standard electronics schematics is not very helpful. For instance, I am still getting used to the fact that the EM symbol for a switch is the electronics symbol for a capacitor.

Thanks for another informative and enjoyable video! I notice the top kickout is ejecting the ball off to the side instead of straight out, right where that playfield wear is, not surprisingly. Is the kickout assembly maybe a bit off kilter? Should it be adjusted so the same spot doesn't continue to get disproportionate wear? Or would that be tampering with the intended design of the gameplay?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 5 жыл бұрын
It's actually designed like that, so that the ball heads to the pop bumper instead of straight down the middle.... if you look at pictures of other ones you'll see they all have that same wear there on the right. You could adjust it but then you'd end up with another wear spot eventually :) If you keep the playfield waxed it shouldn't wear like that, it's usually a sign that the machine was played for a long time without being rewaxed. Basically the ball wears through the wax, then starts in on the paint!

@@LyonsArcade A great question indeed! From some quick research, Motorolla had officially changed to their famous M logo from 1955 to current, which one would assume they had it first... however, looking into WMS industries, they started making pinball games from 1943... and all the logos ive seen on the internet, either had the word Williams with the W at the end or just the W... damn it, Ron/Joe, I need to know, this is the stuff that will keep me up at night! :)

I'm finally to the point where I need to get new rubber rings for my grand prix machine curious what you went with ?? I'm new to rebuilding machines and I'm finding there are a couple different choices to be made. Curious to know what you went with and why? I'm a fan of keeping the machine original. 🙂
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
I would just order regular white rubber rings for it, usually there is a kit you can buy with all the rings in it, I usually get all my stuff from Marco Specialties... I don't order ring kits, I just order multiple quantities of all the rings and have them in stock, so when we do a machine we just have stock of all the rings they need.

thanks for responding back to me, you do a "GREAT" job of explaining what you are doing when you are doing repairs. I noticed that you have the ability to read "ladder" wiring diagrams, that is so important to be able to do in "troubleshooting "problems. after all the wiring diagram is the electrical "ROAD MAP"!!!. yup!! try to repair /troubleshoot a problem without the "wiring diagram"???. have a great day!!!. Great video! I just purchased a Williams Grand Prix and it's set to free play. I'm thinking about returning it to coin operation. It has all the guts on the coin door. How would this machine have been turned into free play so I can reverse it?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 жыл бұрын
Usually there is a switch on the play unit or credit unit (in the backbox with the credit number on it, the big wheel)... .there's a switch that opens when it gets to 0... if that switch is bent so it never opens, it will be on freeplay. So you have to get that big stepper unit working where when it gets to 0 the switch opens, and when it gets to 1 the switch closes. Sometimes they did it by cutting the wires to the coils that move the stepper unit.

What kind of wax do you use on the play field? A car wax or floor wax? Or does it have to be a special kind of wax?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 5 жыл бұрын
I use a Carnuba car wax. The secret is if you do an old playfield, if you use a white wax you'll see all the cracks in the playfield... but if you use Carnuba it's yellow and any wax on the playfield in cracks will be invisible.

I made the flipper gap larger on mine by putting a shorter vertical wireform in the inlane so it's very evil if you try to trap the ball on the flipper.
