Nice video Gareth. Those strap congers seem to put up a canny fight for their size like. I don’t get how people can say they hate them or any fish really. Up my way you get that for whiting. People fish for cod in the winter like mad up here in the northeast they’ll be second to last cast from blanking and they catch a whiting a curse at it. Can’t knock a whiting I think. Good memories of catching them with me dad down the Tyne. When they’re in good numbers too we take some for a fish supper and they’re just like small cod for taste 🤷‍♂ keep up the good work mate.

Thanks mate, appreciated as always. Nice mark this one, lots of wildlife about. Yeah I like Congers and they can often beat the blank and they certainly do have a lot of strength. Same with Whiting, as like yourself they bring back great memories of when Dad and I used to catch loads in the Winter. I'd give anything to see a good run of Whiting this year, as it would be like the old days you know, I love catching them. Same down here, lots will be chasing the Cod and won't be happy if a Whiting comes along! As long as my bait is in the water then I'm happy. Cheers for watching! 👍👍🐟

Isn’t it weird how old garage rods have some secret power to land fish. When I was away in Philadelphia I went to a garage sale and spotted a daiwa multiplayer on an old fibreglass one piece spinning rod, bought it for $10 and planned to leave the rod behind. Had a quick Chuck off a dock with some chopped liver and landed my current personal best fish, 20lb~ blue catfish. The shiney Berkeley travel rod I took with me hardly saw a bend. Garage magic.
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme 2 жыл бұрын
Aghhh yes, you can't beat a bit of old garage magic ha! Often the case isn't it that the older tackle still does the business. At the end of the day, as long as the bait is in the water, well that's all that matters and the fish don't mind if the rod is old! Great story Donny and what a fish that must have been, I wouldn't mind catching a 20lb blue catfish...old garage magic at its best! These days, I enjoy refurbishing my old rods and they look as good as new, some are over 20 years old and still going strong! Thank as always, much appreciated 👍👍🐟

Hi Gareth great to see all the videos of the st brides area ,and the beauty of the area , I’m assuming you are a responsible fisherman , but I’m speaking on behalf of local residents and visitors, We can see that you love the area yourself , but 29/ 4 /22 lots of rubbish and more importantly hook and line were left on the foreshore , can you join us in trying to resolve this issue . Thank you
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme 2 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you for the message. It certainly is a special area and deserves to be respected. Myself, along with 90 percent of my fellow anglers are very responsible, especially when it comes to clearing up rubbish but unfortunately, like in all walks of life, there's a minority that let the side down. In some of my other videos, I talk about the importance of taking rubbish home and I film myself doing it and I know a lot of the other fishing channels do the same. Most of us are conservationists at heart and enjoy the beauty of the marks we fish and understand that these areas are enjoyed by everyone, not just anglers. I'll continue to emphasise the importance of this subject in my future videos and I'll put something on my community page too. Leaving hooks and rubbish behind is not acceptable and the people who do this, well, shame on them. Thanks for bringing this to my attention and I hope you continue to enjoy my future videos. Gareth

Thanks Matthew, much appreciated. Small tides this weekend and so the transporter bridge will be fine. It's not rocky and mostly clean ground. Just make you sure you walk at least 80 metres up from the bridge, to get past the snaggier ground. I fished it in the week and had a couple of Congers and of course, there's always a chance of Bass and Flounder. I might even fish it myself this weekend although not sure yet. Tight lines 👍🐟👍

Hi Mike, I'm good thanks, hope you are too. As for parking, you have two options. You can either park along Outfall Lane (limited parking with a couple of small laybys) which is postcode NP10 8SS. You then walk to the end of the land, onto the Seawall and then to your right...takes approximately 10 minutes or so to get to where I was. If you don't mind a longer walk, you can also park outside of the Lighthouse Inn beyond the double yellow lines or in the pub carpark itself (pay and display) postcode is NP10 8SH. Just walk up the steps, go to your right and it's approximately a 20 minute walk to where I was, all flat though. This venue is suited to bigger tides, next weekend the tides will be too small and you won't get much fishing time. Good luck at Ogmore today, hope you catch a few! Cheers 👍👍🎣

Hi Graeth, I’m really enjoying all of your videos as they bring back fond memories for me , as a kid I used to get up and ride my bike to many of the fishing spots around Newport and caught quite a lot of good fish, back then the docks were open to all fishermen and I used to love fishing the dock gates , caught an 18lb conger down the sea wall once, it scared me to death when I had it in my back pack cycling home , them damn thing came back to life and was going mental and I thought it was going to bite me lol. Also I have a question for you, In my late teens I used to help out on a small trawler fishing from Newport and we used to trawl the flats between Penarth and Newport, we used to target and catch loads of Dover Sole (Lemon Some ) which were all a few inches thick , I can’t understand why they have never been caught from the shore ?
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shaun, thanks for the message, I'm pleased to hear that you're enjoying the videos. Sounds like you have some great memories of fishing around the Newport area, memories you will have for life. What a Conger Eel...18lbs is a cracker, well done. My best is just over 15lbs, I caught that one down St Brides when I was a kid. Yes the Sole numbers have declined over the years. You can still catch a few Dover Sole down at Farmfields off the ledges on small tides and around the Goldcliff area but the numbers are nothing what they were. I wonder if that mud dumping off Penarth is a factor, I have my suspicions, can't be good for the food chain. Same goes for the Whiting...during Autumn and Winter their numbers were massive around Newport but sadly no more, I hope one day they manage to make a comeback! Cheers for watching, hopefully more videos to come soon 👍👍🐟

Love the videos Gareth, I moved from South Wales 15 yards ago and miss the fishing so much, hopefully one day I will return. One question I have for you, what happened to the tidal heights, this is the first Ive heard about it. Love to see you do a video from Subrook, Divers Rock .. one of my favourite spots.
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you've been enjoying the videos and hopefully you will return one day to wet a line! It was back in 2008 that the Arrowsmiths tide table stopped showing the heights in the old scale, however they tell you what to add for each area, if you still want the old school heights. It's a bit like imperial and metric, people have their preferences. Yes, believe it or not I've never fished Divers Rock at Sudrook but definitely on my to-do list! Cheers for watching 👍👍🐟

Thanks Lyndon, appreciated. Technically speaking, you're not meant to park near the West Usk Lighthouse as the lane leading up to it is private. Another great video mate. I’ve just got home from the transporter bridge after my first ever sea fishing session. I did blank but you did advise me earlier on today in your comment on a different video that it’s not the ideal tide for that venue. It wernt a waste of time though i had a few bites and It gave me a chance to get familiar with a different type of angling. I was using pre made rigs I bought from the tackle shop earlier with size 1/0 hooks. Was that a good or bad choice mate
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme 2 жыл бұрын
Unlucky on the blank Jonathan but I assure you that you will catch fish there when fished on the right tide, it's one of my favourite marks. As you say though, it wasn't a waste of time and it will make you even more keen to give it another go. Size 1/0's are fine and in time, I guess you can start to make your own rigs which is what I do. In my future videos, I will be showing diagrams of the rigs I use, which will hopefully be useful for beginners. Tight lines for your next session, I'm sure you'll catch a few. Cheers 👍👍🎣
