I have a 205 Diesel with 225000 miles on the clock, doesn’t smoke at all runs beautifully, much better than any German shite.

I live in Germany. Here Golf 1, and 2 GTI are obviously easier to see than the 205 but this is an exception. Even in Belgium there are plenty of 205 GTI. Except France, in Italy, Spain, Portugal, or even the UK you may find more 205 GTI than Golf Mk1 or MK 2 GTI. FYI even here in Germany a magasine like Auto Bild, which is called VW Bild due to ther biased test pro-VW, admit that the Golf may have been the 1st GTI, but that 205 GTI was the best of all regarding the respect of GTI spirit.

Mercedes c class broke after 35000km, Toyota Verso had to get a second Engine after 15000km, Jeep Cherokee had the Diff Smoke issue on 23000km, Peugeot 307Hdi 152000km on the clock and 11 years old needed 2 oil seals and a new radiator pipe. :) Needless to say I am still driving my Peugeot.

Apostol ZD Nice, now that is cool. I also tend to buy older French cars rather than a new overpriced plastic car these days. Much more value for money vs a new car that loses 25% of it's value once you drive it off the showroom floor.

Keep dreaming! 205 GTI is way over Golf GTI. 205 is the true GTI! Look how many of these are still driver nowadays still 20 years after the last 205 GTI produced. 205 in general is way more reliable than you think, and even more reliable than a golf of its generation.

@Mulph No I‘m not mistaken. Most journalist or racing driver who drove both in that era would confirm as well. The 205 GTI is usually a bit more expensive than the Golf GTI 1. Even where I live in Germany its normal value is a tad higher than the one of Golf 1 GTI, in same condition. The 205 GTI (205 T16 taken appart) has a has a race history in Europe that the Golf GTI doesn’t and that makes all the difference. The Golf look more solid from the materials inside as well as the steel used in the body, but both are on same level regarding reliability, and the 205 is more fun to drive and the most efficient / fastest one.

My first car as a 1972 Jensen Healey in british racing green like this one. Restored it with my dad over 4 year period and drove it when I was 18. I currently drive a VW Golf MK1 cabriolet and the JH is easily the more fun to drive. Reliability, there's another story...

What an asshole is Clarkson, he knew GTi would be close competition so he got a diesel one. WTF? Specs from peugeot: Diesel 205 GRD 59HP Gasoline 205 GTi 130HP +lower height and better handling But they are pretty much the same, aren't they?

You're wrong, most of the car brands that have been bought out are still made in Britain, the old mini has a very distinguished history as one of the best rally cars ever made, Bentley cars are still made in Britain, Lotus - a car brand renowned for being one of the best handling, Rolls Royce are still made in Britain, Mclaren are just epic, Aston Martin. Also you know that Motorsport called F1? well it wouldn't be anything without Britain. Do your research before you say anything.

a 205 GTi 1.9L even in stock with its "only" 130hp beat these English cars on a track of course it's for that these 3 English don't put a 205 GTI 1.9L 130hp on the track ^^ I know at least 3 of my English friends Fan & owner of a 205 GTI 130hp who have their car ready for that! It's in the main reason the arrival of the 205 GTi 1.6L 105hp & 115hp & 1.9L 130hp more fun, faster, more reliable & less expensive which is why the old English sports cars unreliable & poorly finished, have disappeared

Is it that the (old deceptive and perfidious) English (Francophobe here? ^^) humour? OK :p So not need to take a 205 GTi (1,6L or 1.9L and I had one 1.9L 130hp in the 90's) because even my (also) old 205 Turbo Diesel in the beggining of the 90's 'll explose these (poor examples why the English lost all their national builders today...) sport English cars on a track... Keep cool English, that is just (more realistic) French humour ! ^^

You just listed the worst cars, have you conveniently forgotten; Aston Martins, Rolls Royce, Bentley, old mini, Mclaren, Range Rover, Land Rover, Lotus, Ariel atom, Jaguar, Morgan, Noble, Vauxhall. It most certainly wasn't a flop, and we most certainly can do it better than the others.

@TheFuggedaboutit And what im getting at is that USA didnt win the war by themselves which is a common statement from Americans. And you have to realize what Britains did, there defence was really crutial in term of the defeat of Germany, and Americas involvement in ww2. If Germany would have defeated Britain, thay would have taken over Iceland as well, Iceland was used by USA as a pit stop to Europe, Germany would have done the same thing to go to USA. That was a big burden for Britain.

Errr... Excuse me if I'm wrong, but did a non-supercharged Diesel powered 205 run-of-the-mill 205 GRD (the most basic 205 model, using indirect injection 1.9L Diesel engine) get a lap time close to that of 3 British sports car? So then, one might wonder what the 205 Turbo D (it is an actual model, but with reinforced frame and brakes) or an actual mint condition 205 GTI 1.9would have pulled. Probably 1.45.

I love the sheer blind love of these terrible 80's british sports cars! I missed this on T.V and my Mrs said - 'You just missed these cars beating a 205 like yours (mines actually a GTI but she's female don't forget) around the track'... Me = 'eh?' So I watched the clip and then LOL'd. The diseasel wasn't far behind really, if it at least had GTi suspension and brakes it probably would have beaten them.

Maybe but the golf GTI was only 100kg heavier. And even then, if these 100kg's are what matter for you then you don't understand 'GTI'.GTI = a normal family car which is practical and safe but on the right time in the right place gets better than a sportscar. On the aspect of being safe and well built I think the Golf just drives over the 205 and leaves it smashed to pieces behind.

Well in fact the 205 GTI was a bit heavier than the Golf 1 GTI for slightly the same dimensions. Time showed that your affirmations don't really stand. You still see many 205 on the road in 2020, even more than Golf 1 and Golf 2 in most european countries, Germany excepted. And a lot of them are still on the road in France, way more than you can see Golf 1, 2, and 3 together here in Germany. The 205 GTI with lower 1.6 engine 105 HP is already faster, funnier to drive and at least as practical as the Golf 1, and reliability is not a problem for the 205 in general. As for the value as a collection car, the 205 GTI 1.6/1.9 is already a tad more expensive on average than the Golf 1 GTI, even in Germany.
