One scary thing that people who are not familiar with tornados don't recognize is what exactly is the debris being blown about in videos of a tornado. In the videos of the Moore tornado what looks like paper or individual shingles being blown around are actually entire walls and roofs.

True... many of those houses are not prepared for an F4 or F5 tornado, even in a country hit by tornadoes of those calibers like the United States... something similar happens with Japan or Chile with earthquakes: it doesn't matter how many times they occur. Surprised by an earthquake or how much technology they have to combat them, the damage will always be terrible.

He forgot to mention another "worst case scenario" factor in Joplin was that the tornado hit the hospital. Wrecked it beyond repair. Took out their back-up generators too, so 6 people on ventilators died. This obviously crippled life-saving efforts. The tornado also directly hit a nursing home of all places, and killed 21 people there.

The timing is what made that particular tornado stand out. It destroyed two elementary schools that didn't have storm shelters while kids were still at school. The district didn't consider them because shelters are expensive and they figured, "Well, tornadoes typically form later in the evening, so we can get by without them." A lot of young children paid the price for that decision -- some with their lives.

@@ClefairyRox Afternoon tornadoes are always so much stronger. A part of me prefers to get a storm system at night as cooler weather helps prevent stronger storms (it's the mix of hot and cold that creates the storm and the afternoon heat is adding fuel) but another part of me hates it because it always feels worse to just sit and wait in the dark. Night tornadoes always kill more people because they're unaware but here in the southeast they're always rain-wrapped anyway.

What is it about Moore having such a huge target over it? I get that people are moving into areas that are tornado prone, so maybe the growth of towns has something to do with it. The same goes for wild fires causing more damage. We move into areas well known for these things, so they seem worse than they actually are?

@@sarahbuchholz8767 it's Oklahoma City in general. Imagine it like this, the same variables that make it a hospitable place also make it tornado prone. The mountains around it allow winds to rush in one direction, and whenever the jetstream over it moves in a different direction, it creates windshear.

Hackleberg storm is severely underrated. One part being there’s not a lot of good video of it and another being that it was overshadowed by the camera friendly storm that hit Tuscaloosa. Parts omitted from this is that it is believed the wind estimates are too low because it was figured based on the rowing of debris but didn’t take into consideration the land speed of the storm which was flying at 73mph. 2nd part is it was an outbreak and an earlier round of storms took out the warning systems so Hackleberg had no chance and Phil Campbell got little warning. That’s why casualties are so high. 3rd and scariest part was the end of it. Thing tracked right at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant aiming for a direct hit before it shifted and dissipated. Bad as this was, it could’ve been a lot worse.

I don't remember specifically why he was there but he said he walked out of a building and looked down the street and seen a bunch of shit flying around and then he got the hell out of there and said the storm followed him for quite a distance before it broke apart......also about 2 and a half weeks ago there was a bit of a tornado outbreak here in Northwest Ohio and tornadoes were basically all around us and 1 to the northwest of me was a "dead man walking" toenado for a bit. and a town about 35 minutes south of me got completely wiped out. A couple of years before I was born (early 1990s) back when my family still lived in Texas my father witnessed an F5 tornado touched down outside of Temple Texas, it didn't go very far and it didn't kill anyone... BUT it landed in the middle of a massive construction site for a new suburb... By the time it was done it had torn the asphalt off the ground it had removed the pipes from under the ground and had removed the concrete foundations for the homes there wasn't even grass left in the field. Do this day they have never attempted to build anything else there since... now it's just a giant empty field.

Theres an idea that there hasnt been an EF5 tornado since 2011 because of insurance reasons and there are some powerful tornadoes not hitting anything. We all know that the 2013 El Reno tornado was an EF5, not an EF3.

Agreed. I also think an argument can be made that the 2020 Cookeville, 2021 Mayfield, and 2023 Rolling Fork could or should have been classified as EF5. The Mayfield Tornado especially, I think, should have been. But you may be right, that there is a concerted effort to keep from using the EF5 classification.
@jacekatalakis8316
@jacekatalakis8316 3 ай бұрын
There is a comment one about this on one of the Mayfield videos from someone who works at a TV station in that market who said he has no clue how or why it wasn't an EF5 given all the damage and the criteria, though to deffend the NWS for a moment there is not a unified building standard across the US though. You can have one county be entirely up to code mandating shelters and interior safe rooms in all public buildings and new homes and have a company there work with the county folks, then one county over the county gov't does not do any of that and lets cheap and poorly built homes through and the same tornado would be rated differently in both counties. But yes, El Reno and Mayfield IMO are personally EF5s in my book. Grazuli has an amazing list. n

i grew up almost smack dab in the middle between the towns of Jarrell and Waco… needless to say, our area always took school tornado drills very seriously. (unfortunately, our bedrock makes it almost impossible to drill affordable basements, so we never had the luxury of saying just “get underground”) i can’t speak for the rest of Tornado Alley, but our tornado alarms are still tested the first saturday of every month; 5-minute long alarms at 11am sharp. i haven’t visited my old neighborhood in a while, but the last i recall there was still a twisted piece of metal 20 feet up in a local tree from the Jarrell outbreak, and it’s been there for almost 30 years🤷🏼‍♀️ (edit: spelling)

It doesn’t matter if ur in an interior room if an EF4 or EF5 is about to hit ur home. Surviving is unlikely. U must be underground. Idk if those newer steel shelters bolted into the foundation would be enough. Even a basement isn’t enough for a direct hit from an EF5. So having an underground shelter, especially in high prone areas, is a must. Dig the hole. Throw a shipping container in it. Create a doorway to enter and shelter during these things. It’s April 12,2024 as I write this and the same areas in Oklahoma and Texas, OKC and Wichita Falls, Tx are going to experience possible tornadoes on April 15. Let’s hope they’re all prepared.

Living in the OKC Metro, I've been through the May 3rd 1999 and May 20th, 2013 Moore EF5's. The latter of those missed where I was at work on 19th st in Moore by about a block, and flattened the entire neighborhood behind us. Ironically, the May 20th tornado dissipated right after it destroyed the house next door to where we've lived since 2019. Where the house was is an empty field now, with nothing but the brick mailbox still there. Even the foundation and 3/4 of the driveway was taken. I'd still rather deal with tornadoes anyday than something like volcanos, earthquakes etc. You can see a tornado coming and get underground or out of the way. Can't do that with an abrupt volcanic eruption, and there's literally NO warning for earthquakes.

While I would not mind simply visiting Moore, Oklahoma I would not under any circumstances want to live there. Even though I would not live there myself; I still consider Moore a nice place to live and raise a family. From what I can tell; the residents of Moore are extremely nice, friendly and helpful in times of adversity. Following the infamous F-5 tornado which struck the city on May 3rd, 1999 uninjured survivors began helping with rescue efforts by loading up the injured into the beds of pickup trucks or the backs of SUVs and minivans and getting them to hospitals throughout Oklahoma City. This is a phenomenon known as the Oklahoma Standard. This term was first coined in the immediate aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 and described how average everyday citizens dropped whatever it was they were doing and raced to the site of the bombing to help with rescue efforts. Even crew members for the movie "Twister" helped out with rescue efforts.

That 2011 super outbreak gave me storm PTSD. I wasn't anywhere close to the worst storms (though the county I lived in was on the map shown) but the entire season was brutal. It took a few years for me to not have terrible anxiety every time we got a line of storms.

Ironic given that we're likely to see an EF5 tomorrow in the Ohio Valley. Nasty outbreak expected tomorrow. Notice he said Xenia happened April 3rd, 1974? Thats 50 years ago this Wednesday. And were likely gonna see another major outbreak tomorrow. So ominous.

Not expecting to see an EF5 tomorrow, models are downtrending, instability may be limited due to early morning convection

Oh man, it started with the 2011 ones....I live in Alabama and you really lucky/blessed on that day. Also when I found out some people really do just stand outside and watch. I saw a live feed of one of them and hoped to the basement. That day was terrifying. Also shout out to James spann our weather man

Watching this when a tornado warning went off. No cap. Had to crate the dogs and take cover in interior hall. Not sure if it touched down or just had some rotation on radar. Also, we don’t have basements in our area due to high clay content of soil.

After Mike Morgan's speechless segment I believe they told that crew to unplug and get the fuck out of there, only for it to cross away from them and they were able to stay there. It's an incredible piece of television.

Always enjoy your selections Thurston. I have always been fascinated by tornadoes, although I have no desire to live through one. We do know a bit about the Tri-State Tornado. There were plenty of eyewitnesses, we know that there was a massive damage field that was continuous for its track. Brick structures and many wooden structures built before 1980 and yes, in the early 1900s were definitely better constructed than buildings built in the 90s through today. I have known a few contractors who would 100% agree with me. I have seen new vs old/refurbished construction, I prefer pre-1980. Modern buildings, unless specifically reinforced, are made with lighter materials like sheet rock (drywall) and particle board. Do some demo in an old building made with plaster and lathe to learn about durability. There are stories of the Tri-State Tornado of miners underground who made their way to the surface after losing power to find surface structures completely gone. The day was a total crazy day for weather. In the regions of the tri-state tornado, the day began with very warm temperatures and ended with snow in many areas as the temperature dropped around 40 degrees Fahrenheit from morning to evening.

@@Zhiperser WRONG!!!! In FACT if you're building something like the size of a school it costs LESS than a standard building per square foot. It costs the same per square foot as a wooden custom built house of the same fit and finish. There are literally HUNDREDS built now. And school districts in tornado alley and the mid-west have been building them for DECADES now.

@@user-po3ev7is5w Maybe research the prices for residential housing. It’s definitely not inexpensive or everyone would have a shelter. It’s also a little different in the mid west vs the south bc of terrain

@@k-poppy8482 No need. I've seen 10 of them built. They cost the SAME per square foot as a custom wood frame house of the same square feet. What don't you understand exactly? Have you ever been involved in the building of one of them? If not, what are you babbling on about?

@@user-po3ev7is5w ok then. I guess everyone hasn’t figured out this big secret. I would hope for them to be inexpensive of course, but I’m not so sure that everyone is able to get custom wood frame houses built specially for them like you’re suggesting

The reason why jarrel Texas was cleaned of debris is at times it was stationary moving at just a couple miles per hour sandblasting everything repeatedly picking it up , throwing it down and back up again multiple times. Victims had to be identified by dental records, and cattle in some cases were basically skeletal remains
