The iconic picture from Tienemen Square was of a single man standing in the way of Chinese tanks.

The Tiananmen Square massacre was literally swept under the rug by Chinese authorities. They don’t even acknowledge it happened. The government cracks down by destroying memorials to the event and beating down protesters in every sense. Many Chinese immediately left for Hong Kong once the protests started. They grabbed flights to the US and were granted asylum by political means. Many settled in California and New York. My parents chose Florida as it was safe and nobody knew who they were except very close friends and family. It was very early with Orlando Chinatown’s development but we made it. I believe Chinatown in London was also getting established a little bit back then. It definitely wasn’t like today that’s for sure.

There is a wonderful but bittersweet story about a telegraph operator who could have escaped the Halifax blast but stayed behind to warn upcoming trains to stop. He saved hundreds of lives.

He could've left after the first telegraph, as did the people who warned him of the danger, but he stayed behind to thoroughly make sure no trains continued their paths to Halifax. Here's the last telegraph sent: Hold up the train. Ammunition ship afire in harbour making for Pier 6 and will explode. Guess this will be my last message. Good-bye, boys.

The Lucy episode was a huge milestone as Lucy broke the barrier of announcing a baby on tv. It was unheard of in the 50s as the whole censorship thing was still enforced. Once the barrier was broken the censors went nuts but Lucy and Ricky threatened the board with pulling a massive chunk of funding if they didn’t back off. That also allowed movies to use new language and start showing a little skin.

There is a movie called Hotel Rawanda. It stars Don Cheadle. It is the true story of a hero of the Rawanda war. He was a hotel manager who housed and protected hundreds of ethnic refugees at the hotel he managed. He saved many lives and working with the IN peacekeepers was able to get them out of the country to safety. It's a great story. The war was between the Hutu and the Tosi tribes, it was a civil war. Thousands were killed for nothing other then that they were of a different tribe.

Hi Kabir, Groucho was a great comedian! He was just over twice the age as Elvis. I nearly shut down an office of the Federal Government when I called my mom, a huge Elvis fan, at work and gave her the news. I called her number in Dallas, and said, "Mom, I've got some bad news, someone you love has died." I heard her gasp and ask who. I told her, "Elvis", she didn't say anything for about ten seconds, then I heard her call out to her co-workers the news. Once again silence, and then an almost deafening cacophony in the background, as all of her co-workers began asking for details. She told me that not much work got done for the rest of the day.

During the Loma Prieta Quake, all the Major News Channels lost their feed due to being connected to public utilities that shut down. ESPN was not as big as they are today and had to have their feed from a Satellite Truck running on gas in the parking lot. Suddenly the sports guys for The World Series became news anchors for the world! The swift change from sports commentators to voices of calm reason was huge for ESPN's reputation. I still admire them for that! Well done ESPN!!!

The part about the Tiananmen Square Massacre is that you can get in trouble in China for saying it even happened. It was mostly college students protesting and there's the classic photo of the man standing in front of the tanks. The Chinese Government in Beijing is ruthless and it should come to no surprise to anyone that it caused a lot of people to move to western countries after that. Regarding being held accountable? Who'd hold them accountable? You see how they treat their own people what good would waving a finger do?

I remember the Black Saturday bushfires well. The smoke and even embers made it to the Melbourne metro region and made breathing difficult, not to mention driving already hot summer temperatures to hellish levels. I lived up a hillside then, so walking to and from the local train station was oppressive. Of course, this was nothing compared to the horrors faced by people who had to flee their homes and hope they'd survive.

As for Tianamen Square those of us who did get to see some footage were absolutely shocked. Many of us are still wondering if the young man who faced down a TANK with nothing but his body are still hoping he made it. Convieniently the cameras cut out before we could see if he lived or was thrown in jail.

IT’S ALSO NICKNAMED/LABELED bye Creator BY THE SHOWS CREATOR & NAMESAKE, JERRY SEINFELD: “A SHOW ABOUT NOTHING!” Although the episodes connected as a whole, each episode was completely different from the previous & future episodes. It was like watching Jerry doing his famous/infamous standup comedy routines. Only you see the actual images like you’re watching what would be considered Comedic Roleplay Streams. Film of the Tiananmen Square massacre is almost non existent, because this was in the pre-cellphone era, and very few people owned film or video cameras. Anyone who did attempt to film anything was arrested and their film was destroyed. The most famous surviving footage is the Tank Man episode, which is easy to find on KZfaq.

Unlike most genocides which are organized in Rwanda it was just rival tribe members killing each other's families left and right. How could any military have stopped that? Couldn't we have killed or captured the biggest offenders? NO! We tried this just two years earlier during the Somalian genocide and we failed miserably!

Surely you have seen some of the photos of the man standing in the square facing down the column of tanks. Events that have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives (or more) that I can think of just off the top of my head include both world wars, the Crimean War, the US Civil War, the Chinese Civil War, the Cultural Revolution, the Great Leap Forward, the Khmer Rouge, the Spanish Flu, several different Smallpox outbreaks, several different Bubonic Plague outbreaks, the Irish Potato Famine, and the Year Without Summer. I'm sure there are more. We haven't landed humans on the moon recently, mostly because there isn't that much to be gained by doing so again.

Hopefully if Donald Trump gets elected there will be something to overshadow his inauguration.

We haven’t been back to the moon because we aren’t trying to. There’s nothing else to do there

That's not true, look up the NASA Artemis program. The first unmanned craft went to the moon in 2022, and the current schedule is to land people on the moon in 2026, with a long term goal of establishing a permanently manned moon base.

@@gotham61 I know not CURRENTLY, but in terms of for most of the last few decades we had zero interest in returning because there was no reason to. Even now it’s not because there’s anything with the moon specifically we care about, it’s essentially tests for future mars missions and eventually colonization. I was more just commenting on why we hadn’t been constantly sending people there

Honestly Kabir I can think of at least 5 other conflicts in Africa that took hundreds of thousands of lives. You really live in a history void.
