Ya know, there's a cartoon I used to watch all the time called Time Squad. About a small team of space time travelers ( who were essentially futuristic cops) who's job is to go back in time to certain historical moments in time to make sure the famous historical figures do their job and keep time on track. Well, one mission was to see what was going on with Betsy Ross and why she wasn't making the first American flag to inspired George Washington's army. Turns out she went flower child and was encouraging the army to not fight against the British or stop them from conquering America (which wasn't America yet) and turned them all into hippies. When one of the members, whose name was Otto, was trying to reason with her and brought up democracy, she says this: "Democracy?! Please! Yeah, sure it sounds great now! But in a couple hundred years, it'll just be another word for capitalism! Your democracy will be just a bunch of money-hungry corporations dictating everything from what you eat to the clothes on your back! Your "democracy" will be shown for what it really is! A farce!" Boy, she had no idea. 😔

My husband easily works 60+ hour weeks.i work as a part time vendor stocking retail stores. Often working 30-40 hours per week, but not considered full time no matter how much I work. My job offers no benefits, no vacation, no paid holidays. We are tired but we have to work our asses off. One of our 3 children has medical needs, there's no time for burnout...

I started laughing Kabir when you said that we Americans have the power to change things in Washington DC! Washington is what we call “The Good Ol Boys Club!” To put it in cruder terms “It’s not who you know but who you BL*W.” There hasn’t been an honest Official that’s been elected to look after the American People’s interests in years. I’m 66 years old and my Husband died in February of this year, I was on Disability for 15 years and made under $850.00/month, then my husband had to go on Disability because of Kidney Disease. He made around $3,000/month. When He died, between my retirement (I turned 66) and my Husband’s death benefits I get a little over $2,200/month. If I wasn’t in Senior Housing Apartment, I wouldn’t be able to afford to live on my own! I’m not complaining (well maybe a little) , but I Thank God for what I have because there are people who are living or not living on less than I do, and I don’t know how! The Government doesn’t care about the American Population they care that they get their raise every year and FREE Healthcare for themselves and their Families. This is just part of the American Dream. The Elderly suffer, but the Single Parents suffer more. They get paid just over Poverty Level and they have children to raise with almost zero amount of pay. Taxes go up,but wages stay the same.

Yeah when he said “can’t you change things by voting” is the moment I felt the need to comment. People who work low paying jobs are considered less than. It’s common for someone to say “well if they’d finished school or worked harder they wouldn’t be working there” it’s disgusting.

Kabir, we cannot just vote in officials who support workers' rights because, literally, NO politicians, left or right, will advocate for such things. Why? Because of the way that our elections are funded. Advocating for anything viewed as "anti-corporation" (any measure that impacts the corporate bottom line) would be political suicide, as it would cost a candidate so much in political contributions that they could not run a competitive campaign. Our political process has become pay-to-play, with corporations holding the purse strings. Sure, labor unions contributed to candidates who were pro-labor. But after over 50 years of progressively union-busting legislation and SCOTUS rulings, that's not really "a thing" anymore. And so many US "patriots" wonder why it's (mostly only) 3rd world peoples trying to enter the USA. Well duh! You'd HAVE to have it pretty bad in your own country to want to come here. That, or else just have a really limited passport in your country of birth.

"Are you tired?". As a mother of two kids, working in social work, yes, I'm extremely burnt out. But... I get a ton of holidays, vacation, and sick leave. But when I was a contracted Online Graphic Designer for a marketing company and had to take up a 2nd job. Ironically it was Best Buy 😂 and worked evenings and weekends. I had zero leave. When I became pregnant, my primary client didn't want me as a designer anymore as I wpuld be taking ng some leave for after baby was born. So I was left with my PT job with a newborn baby. Went back to work at week 4 and not at the 6 week mark because I had no leave and needed to pay bills. I was not physically ready, baby was in NICU etc, and Best Buy management knew this and were super nice about letting me rest and sit the whole time. But many jobs won't let you do that. Anyway, long time ago and longer story if I get into details but wont bore you. But yes, I am exhausted.

Another problem is that more and more employees are being classified as contractors, who don't have as many rights as regular employees. For instance, overtime rules, the maximum number of hours per day or week an employer can require, rules for meal breaks and rest breaks, etc. apply only to regular employees. In California, an employee who has a dispute over pay can go to a state arbitration board to have the case heard at no cost, while a contractor must sue for unpaid wages.

When I left the military after four years and joined the work force I was introduced to terrible working condition, corporate money waste and terrible conditions for lower level employees. (I was in management so it didn't affect me). But morally I couldn't accept it. So I quit, and started at the entry level of civil service where worked for 30 years. We didn't earn but 50-60% of our private sector counterparts, but we were unionized, and because of the unions had paid time off, holidays, negotiated cost of living and merit pay increases and a livable retirement. And I was in a job where I enjoyed working to benefit the public and the natural environment.

@lynrossi8409

Forget the level of danger for a moment? According to the most recent pay surveys from the Labor Department, federal workers' base pay is 52 percent less than similar private sector workers. So if you hear about federal holidays, paid time off, and really nice health care packages, think of that as a small portion of the actual pay we get? We're still at least 30 percent lower than our public counterparts. On top of that, we get to worry every time Congress can't agree on the yearly budget and we face shutdowns. Every stinking year we worry about this. Those who are lucky to work remotely must have a dedicated office space with security measures and an environment that meets workplace standards for safety and ergonomics. Yet the government does not pay any part of my internet bill, cost for office equipment and supplies, or even allows me to write off part of my rent or mortgage as other home businesses are allowed. They provide you a laptop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and headset. But all of it is only for government work and you can lose your job if you use it for anything else. You have to pay for the best Internet access because you'll be connecting through a VPN and be channeled through serious firewalls... Speed and reliability are essential to access the workload on the servers. Then we can talk about the workload. Since I started 10 years ago, the workload has increased 400 percent, but our staffing has only increased close to 300 percent. More to do, but with fewer people to manage it. Stress and burnout are very real. Over the last 3 years, I've been having a hard time managing blood glucose levels because of the increased stress at work. But what about retirement? Yep, if I chose to set aside up to 10 percent of my salary, they will match, but only up to 5 percent. But you get raises every year? Not really. I'm at a point where I only get a merit raise every three years and that only adds about 2k to my salary. Would you be happy getting less than a dollar an hour raise once every three years? Now, if Congress approves it, we may get a COLA increase, but we went several years on a salary freeze and just had our largest raise at just over 3 percent. Inflation was over 8 percent, so we didn't even close that gap by half. So, why work there? Because I make a difference every minute of every day I'm at work. I collaborate with 300 very intelligent and dedicated staff that assist over 300,000 people each year. The position I hold requires a Master's degree and, once hired, requires specialized training that lasts for months. Where other jobs have a 90-day probationary period, ours lasts a full year because that's how long it takes to see if new people will be able to meet the demands of this agency. Still sound like a "cush" job?
@msdarby515
@msdarby515 Жыл бұрын
@@JonS0107 Yup. You're nearly impossible to fire even with a poor job performance. You get raises whether they are deserved or not. Performance is essentially never scrutinized. You mentioned Medicare, and that is a “health insurance” that’s available for seniors, but you still have to pay for it. It just costs less than traditional insurance. However, it doesn’t cover eye, hearing, or dental care. Most people have to then pay for supplemental insurance. My Mom pays out of pocket for her eye and dental care. She needs hearing aids, but won’t go because she can’t afford it.

The best that happened to me was my company CLOSING. We were working 60-70 hours a week with two weeks' vacation that we couldn't take. We were always on call, even if we were off. We had to answer emails and phone calls on days off. We are now all laid off. I'm finishing my Ph.D., and I don't have to work with no sleep while completing it and working a mandatory 60 hours a week. I'm not tired for the first time in years. I cannot speak for every American, but burnout is normal, but your employer doesn't care. I returned to work two weeks after having a c-section with my third child. It was unpaid and only because I had some complications after surgery. That was over 25 years ago, and nothing has changed. VACATION AND SICK TIME??? Those terms are actually pretty funny. Most of us don't know anything about it. When you comment that you plan to come to the US for 3-4 weeks, we don't get that much time off in a year, and vacation time is the same as sick time. If you are sick, most need to use their vacation time. I had to work while hospitalized after having emergency surgery because I hadn't earned time off from a new job. (My doctors were not happy, but they understood. They see it every day.) Are we burned out? Absolutely!!! Some great companies treat their employees with so much respect, but it is rare. Unfortunately, it's just what we know and how we live. Welcome to working in the USA.

If they were puritans, they fought for the right to jail or exile anyone who wasn't a member of their religious faith. Before I became disabled, I worked in medical offices. I have done various jobs from front office, billing and even office manager. The highest pay that I ever received was $12 per hour as an office manager. That is only a few dollars more per hour than the McDonald's worker. In the one of the medical offices, I worked at, health insurance wasn't even one of our benefits. Out of all the benefits, you would think that a doctor's office would offer health insurance to its employees. And we would go for years without ever receiving raises.

My son lost his state insurance the day he turned 18 and I have to work myself to death to pay for his medications. Since Reganomics (trickle-down economics) and active union busting, pay for CEOs has sky-rocketed, and regular people have seen stagnation, then decreases in wages. There has also been a steady decrease in the funding of our public schools, instilling a winners-losers competitive atmosphere for student enrollment, along with a high- stakes testing program that perpetuates the winner-loser scenario. It sets winning as more important than a good education. This is what I consider the "dumbing down" of U.S. education. I believe this has had an impact on critical thinking skills. What's so sad is the number of people who believe the trickle-down theory is a good idea, people who are continuously hurt by this system, people who are voters easily led by the fear machine that too many Congress people wield like a cudgel. Our Congress has voted more than once to lower taxes on large corporations and the wealthy, but to increase taxes for the rest of us. It's no exaggeration to say that the secretary of a CEO pays more taxes than the boss. Right now, we are blessed with a good man as President, but he has to have the support of Congress to make sweeping changes. Obama was a good man but was usually not supported by Congress. This all has to do with politics. It's a mess, but I have hope.

It's hard to hang on to hope with open racists in control of government and governors like deSantis trying to whitewash even slavery, claiming slaves were benefited by learning trades. It's so gross and horrible now in this country, in 53 years I've never seen such a mess. Our only hope is the strong young people coming in to office, fighting hard to make a difference. I was just listening to Justin Pearson here in Tennessee saying he WILL break rules if he has to, because unjust rules need to be broken. People like him give me hope at least. I hope he survives and moves up in congress one day. I would vote for him for president right now honestly. He is such a good and honorable man.

I'm 52 and completely exhausted and burned out from working in the US my whole life. My Dad passed away in May, and I quit my job to have time to process my grief and take care of his final affairs, as my job only gives 3 days of paid bereavement, and then it's back to work. I was already considering quitting for health reasons, and this was the final straw. I've worked many "middle class" jobs over the years, but I've never been paid $22/hour in my life for any job as my base wage (overtime easily puts me over that amount though). My last job as a Data Analyst only paid $17.67/hr after 3 years in that position. I wish I could afford to move to a better country that cares about its citizens. Voting doesn't seem to change anything; we get idiots like Trump elected into office at all levels of government (how I have no clue; who votes for such morons?). I just hope I can keep working another 20 years until I can retire, and I hope Social Security will still exist by then, but the right-wing politicians here seem hell-bent on destroying that too.

I live in the southern USA after I lived in NYC for over a decade. I was at a company for 10 years, worked 4 different positions over that time. I was hourly for most of that time, paid "southernly market value." College grad with 20+ years of corporate experience, I wanted to become salaried, thinking I would be able to make more money. There's a cap on how much in this large company (5k+ employees) you can make hourly. I finally got a salaried position that agreed to pay me $52k. I made $55k before I left NYC. To make $52k, after little training, I worked 18+ hours a day, 7 days a week remotely. I only worked that job for 18 months and I couldn't maintain my ability to pay attention to detail due to burnout and fatigue, so I was fired. Though this department believed it promoted work/life balance, it was same BS as 'we're a team/family and care about you' trope. I found out afterwards that they have tried to hire 3 people to do what they claimed I was supposed to do in my position, but they can't keep them. They set me up to fail, and 3.5 years later, I still have nightmares of forgetting a meeting or sending a vital email.

Back in the late 1990s, early 2000s I worked for a marine construction company. It was Dutch owned. Medical benefits were paid 100%, employees were paid and treated well and we had some wonderful holiday events for the employees. A couple of years in, the parent firm sold us to an American investor who turned the benefits over to American HMO-PPOs trashing them, got rid of all the experienced employees because they made too much, converted many of the construction guys in the field who made over X dollars/year to salary completely eliminating their overtime, which in many cases reduced their pay by a factor of 20-30%. Needless to say, nearly all the long time experienced construction employees left. The company, which had been successful for decades, soon started hemorrhaging money, became unprofitable, couldn't win bids and had to be sold for scraps, just because some American investor needed to suck profits from it. This is American corporate culture.

I live in Washington State. Here the minimum wage here is $15.74hr. What that equates to is that the cost of EVERY service-based consumable (i.e. a McDonalds hamburger) has increased in cost exponentially...pricing many (myself included) out of even being able to partake of said products. 5 years ago, the cost of fast food in my area was 35-65% less than it is now...all due to a rapid increase in the minimum wage. While states are allowed to enact their own laws on what their minimum wage should be, Social Security (a program which I am forced to live off of for medical reasons) is a FEDERAL program. If Social Security were to make a cost of living adjustment to the current market, which it cannot afford to do, it would STILL not be able to keep up with the cost of housing in my area. Minimum wage jobs are entry level for a reason. The Job market has a lot of work that needs to be done, but the economy can't support the added inflation of paying these workers what they are worth...so a compromise must be made. Minimum wage was designed for people who still live at home, or are working a mindless job to have some spending money at college, or maybe for a supplemental income for a worker who wants to get ahead. (I used to work three jobs.) It was never INTENDED to fully support someone living on their own. If it can, it destroys the economy for the working class. Politicians love to tell you that you deserve better than minimum wage, and then they promise you ridiculous minimum wages like $15-$20hr. In return, you hand over your vote to them and they find new ways to tax the very things you would buy with your newly found extra cash. Don't be fooled. There are two old sayings to remember here: "Never trust a man wearing a suit better than your own." and "The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife." Whether you agree or disagree with my viewpoint, I hope we can agree that high prices ore killing the working class, and we should be looking for ways to bring them down first...then work on better wages. Bonus points of you can comment what the quotes are from.

"In my Inaugural I laid down the simple proposition that nobody is going to starve in this country. It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living." - FDR So we can agree you are incorrect when you assert that minimum wage was meant to be "supplemental" since the person who established it clearly disagrees with that. Also the variation in the price of a Big Mac is a paltry $1.40 and the highest cost is in Hawaii, which has more to do with the cost of shipping goods to a remote island than the minimum wage there. (Edit: when I say variation, I mean state by state. Minimum wage in Washington may be higher, but in other states where it is still $7.25/hr it costs at least $3.91 for the same burger, which is more than half an hour of labor for minimum wage employees in that state; so everyone is paying more, even where employees are not paid more, and McDonald's is making a huge profit). Walmart convinces you the only way for them to keep prices low is to pay workers starvation wages, but the people who own it are sitting on millions of dollars while your taxes "supplement" the low wages they pay via SNAP benefits. Wake up, it isn't the greed of the poor making things unaffordable for you, it's the greed of the wealthy.

@@rachelk4805 it took all of congress to create the minimum wage, so to assert that FDR, in his infinite wisdom, is the opinion of each and every lawmaker is flawed logic. I don't deny that these are evil corporations, who do not compansate their people fairly. What I am saying is that the same people who are demanding a higher wage, are the ones who will be the most impacted by its implementation. Why then should a worker reward a company with their labor...and if they are only qualified for minum wage work, then we have far bigger problems. As for the median cost of a big mac, it is currently $6.89 in my area, which far outstrips any index I've found. So don't believe everything you read about the state of the economy. Piecework is when you create something or do something like in my case I packed apples in boxes. I got paid.25¢ a box. @@Hayseo It's just 9 here in TN, that's what my daughter made during her brief and horrible stent at McDs. It paid more than Little Caesars, which paid 8 year before last. She got a job at Walmart for 15 but thats for online pickup, which she was already experienced with. They didn't start everyone out at that wage and until last month cashiers made 14, now they're hiring at 15 but anyone already working there didn't get a pay bump, this was just to entice new workers. The truth is we often find jobs working from home or doing delivery work or crafts now so fast food work isn't nearly as in demand, especially when the workers are treated so poorly by companies and customers alike.

Because of “Citizens United”, a law passed in the early 2000’s, which in essence allows corporations the same rights was citizens when it comes to politician campaign an other contributions (thanks, Bush White House), most of our politicians are funded by corporations and special interest groups. Many of these topics/initiatives are considered anti-corporation, and therefore politicians are noticeably reluctant to support them.

Hi Kabir ! I'm an American who has had a mostly positive experience in low skill jobs. I started off working at McDonald's and was paid well enough for a student living at home and stayed there 2 and a half years until I gave up waiting for a promised pay increase. While there working part time I got a good discount on meals and since I helped close the store I was allowed to take any food already made home with me (even to school the next day)! My second most recent job was Goodwill (thrift store) which was my best job (stayed for over 14 years). I was full time there and earned tons of vacation hours, sick time and had good health insurance. They did however not offer overtime (over 40 hours a week) and most often scheduled for 37 and a half to ensure you didn't get to 40. Now in CT (where I live), full time is 30 hours and a recent change they require the you take an unpaid half hour break if you're scheduled for 6 or more hours, used to be 7 and a half (I believe). My current employee does not treat part time workers (like myself well). I usually don't get even 20 hours, often much less as I'm part of a team that processes merchandise for a department store and if the amount of pallets of wares is too small I'll even get my shift cut! This company does however offer paid maternity and paternity for full time employees. While the government doesn't mandate many of the things other countries take for granted, more often than not companies offer them in some capacity. I think this why many Americans don't realize how bad they have it
@rachelk4805
@rachelk4805 Жыл бұрын
Most companies promise it, but in reality, set things up in such a way that their employees don't get to take advantage of any benefits. Even in your own comment, in the "best" job you had, you "earned" vacation time, when again, every other industrialized country requires companies to give you vacation time. It's like, if minimum wage kept up with capital gains it would be $23 right now. It isn't, so someone who has worked decades and has college debt considers their $20/hr to be good compensation. Things are so bad here people are grateful for scraps they are "given" from their employer.

Euro-American here. Yes, we work too much, and because almost none of us are in unions, we have zero choice about our conditions. According to all polls, most Americans want all of this. Except, in America, the people *don't* have the power, the corporations do. The wealthy and corporations dictate the laws of the country, we don't. We don't have any power. All those nice homes, expensive doctors, the top schools, etc. they aren't for us. They are for the rich and upper middle class. *Most* people live paycheck to paycheck.

That's why people say America is a plutocracy and not a real democracy. The founding fathers were so concerned with protecting property owners, in a time when people were literally property. Now slavery is illegal and those property owners are still buying politicians to ensure their profit is held in higher regard in the law than the lives of actual people.

Only an Amercan who has traveled abroad can speak to this. I have been to many other countries, and the US is the best. My sister had emergency surgery in England. I saw the conditions (sorry Kabir, but 16 people to a bay and 3 bays in a ward with 4 bathrooms for a bariatric ward is NOT ok). And she had to have 5 surgeries to correct what they did when she got back to the US. I spent a week sitting by her bedside in Redding, and the best thing was the 2-3x/ day giant kettle of tea. All the patients asked what an American was doing there. It was a challenge. Also, I've been everywhere from Norway and Iceland to Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Morocco, and Bolivia Just to name a few. Ahh, but this article equates an entry-level job (meant for teenagers getting into the job market) wiith a "living wage." Minimum wage was never meant to support a family. You move up and move on if you're motivated. Advocating for a "living wage" at fast food places will be replaced by robots. Learn a trade if you want more. We have a shortage of welders, a/c techs, and carpenters. 3 figures within 5 years usually.

I don’t like these kind of videos because they leave out so many things. These videos are made to fit an agenda not to really give accurate information. Of course McDonalds may pay 22 an hr in a country that probably doesn’t have damn near thousands of McDonald’s in every state. And no offense but Kabir many of you Europeans are given propaganda info about America. Many of you guys over there aren’t the most critic thinkers. These videos don’t give an honest picture of us.

@@Kim-427 All the video essentially did was compare laws between countries. That's it. That's the video in a nutshell. If you think the narrator is lying, instead of talking about lack of critical thinking and propaganda in Europe, wouldn't it be easier to just look up the laws and see if the narrator was lying or if it is actually true? For example you could look to see if there are federal laws mandating paid family leave across all of these countries or federal laws on how much vacation you have to be given, etc. In the U.S. all of those things would be contained in the United States Code which spells out federal law, so it is fairly easy to find that information.
