I was one of the 52,800 fans that showed up for that game! The stadium can hold 75,000. 52,800 would make it the third highest attend a game of our entire season last year, we averaged just over 35,000. But that turn out is especially impressive considering the game almost got canceled due to lightning and thunderstorms in the area. so some people who buy tickets may have stayed home for fears of traveling, and then the game getting canceled. It was also on a Wednesday night, so many people had to work the next day. Mid week games, no matter the sport are usually very poorly attended in the United States.

Charlotte FC fan here, I remember this game. Being the new kids on the block at the time, everyone had Chelsea giving us a rout. Yeah we play more on the possession and defensive, but we take our chances when they’re presented. Glad you decided to react to some CLT content. We’ve got some of the craziest fans here. I was at that game with my sister. All Chelsea players and their fans said that this game was meaningless because it was an exhibition and they weren’t trying, but to us…it mattered. We did something that most MLS clubs can’t do…we beat a global powerhouse and we did it in our first and only game playing an international opponent in our first ever year as a team. Pretty special man.

Yet, some people still don't want to give the MLS credit. I know this is preseason but that's not an excuse considering who Chelsea fielded during this match and Charlotte was a new club in MLS with a salary cap. To me, that's pretty impressive and credit should be given where it is due.

As a 30-year-old American, I'd say that the Chelsea and Man U were the two clubs I heard the most about/saw supported most often/etc. when I was growing up. So yeah, CFC has tons of fans in the States.

Wasn’t a full house but there was close to 53,000 fans…the exact number slips my memory. Pretty good for a midweek exhibition. Not many other teams, probably none, can claim that. Charlotte fans are legit. Always loud, always proud, and always show.

You are right about the intensity vs EPL. Though in MLS the intensity ramps up significantly towards and during the playoffs.

Chelsea has probably the largest US fanbase, largely because of Pulisic afaik. That being said, I have a soft spot for Charlotte FC’s fanbase. They regularly see crowds of 30,000+, despite playing in a generally boring, and somewhat disappointing stadium by MLS standards. Not to mention, some of their ticket pricing is genuinely absurd for the MLS level, yet their first home opener saw 74,000+ show up. One day I would definitely have marked down on your calendar is July 4th (Independence Day here in the States) as LAFC and LA Galaxy will be playing at the Rose Bowl, as a ~90,000 seat neutral venue. Match was originally scheduled on opening day of the season, but had to be rescheduled due to what turned out to be a damaging severe storm system. The Rose Bowl hosted eight matches in the 1994 World Cup Final, which included Romania beating Argentina 3-2 in the Round-of-16, Brazil beating Sweden 1-0 in the Semifinals, Sweden taking 3rd place in a 4-0 drubbing of Bulgaria, and of course, Brazil winning the World Cup in penalties over Italy. That World Cup directly led to the formation of MLS, so it is rather fitting that one of the biggest derbies in MLS gets hosted at such a historic venue in World Football.

Chelsea will be fine. I expect a strong finish to the season and back on track by next season.
