As person who grew up in Reno Nevada, I can tell you it's mainly about the limited avaliability of potable water. The ground water in many places naturally contains high amounts of arsenic. Also, above ground testing of nuclear weapons in Nevada from WWII to the late 1960's had rendered several areas too radioactive to live in.

There has never been enough water in the S.W. U.S. There are constant fights between S.W. Utah, Las Vegas, and South Cali about who gets what and the Colorado river doesn't reach the ocean anymore because of how much is taken. There is no way to pump water into the middle of Nevada.

If you want to get weirder, Denali/McKinley is the fourth “tallest” mountain on Earth but only the 3rd tallest in the US. “Tallest” being measured as from base to tip- 2 mountains in Hawaiʻi are “taller” as their base’s are all the way down on the deep sea floor. About Point Roberts: I think I remember hearing about people who lived there being almost completely cut off from everything during covid. Canada closed their borders, so they could only get back to the mainland US by boat.

I live just 15 minutes south of Nashville, TN. In Nash, I40, I24, and I65 all converge. 40 goes the entire distance between west and east, 65, the entire distance between north and south, and 24 runs southeast to northwest. Many major Interstates converge all in Nashville.

The point in Minnesota that requires you to go through Canada - yes, you need your US passport if you drive through Canada. However, in the winter, you can bypass Canada by using the ice road over the frozen lake. During the pandemic, they were cut off from supplies due to closed borders, but only in the summer.

the borders lines have tons of funny stuff even concerning state lines. I live on a lake on the North Carolina/Virginia border and because of the way the state line runs through the top half of the Lake, our mail carrier has to cross over into Virginia and drive a 30 minute round trip to deliver mail to a couple dozen houses that are on a peninsula of NC land that juts out into the north side of the lake. It looks like it is even worse for the VA carriers that have to cover the small bits of VA land that are on the south shore of the lake and jut out north over the line from the south shore.

Just to add a detail to the proximity oddity of Mount Whitney and Badwater basin, they are both inside (or are part of the border of) the same County. Inyo County is the second largest county in California by area (10,192 sq mi / 26,397 km2), but has a population of less than 20,000 people. The County Seat (Capital) is the town of Independence - which has a population of less than 1,000.

In Nebraska the Capitol is Lincoln, which is in the east central part of the state, and a county named Lincoln that is about 200 miles west of the city.

I live on the southern border of Maine. Even though we border and have beaches on the Atlantic Ocean, we are considered southWEST Maine. A 3rd. place that should be with the NW Angle and Pt. Roberts is Hyder, AK, in that if a resident wants to get to the rest of AK, they have to either take a flight over the Coast Mtns. to get to Ketchikan, in the Panhandle, or drive 441mi./710km. through Canada on the Cassiar, Alaska and Klondike Hwys. to get to Skagway--the nearest other town in AK by road. Another point about counties--there are 2 states that give them a different name--Parish in LA, and Borough in AK, and if Puerto Rico ever becomes a state, its term will be município (municipality in English). Just for fun, have you ever heard San Diego jokingly called Sandy Eggo?😀 Rhode Island is the smallest state at 1/94th that of WY, but the smallest population honor goes to WY, with less than half that of RI. The 3 biggest metro areas are NYC, LA and Chicago, with Houston being #4, and it's predicted that eventually San Antonio will be #5. True--NV's heat is a problem, but the lack of jobs is also a significant factor. One that wasn't included, since it's not a quirk, but is worth mentioning is that everyone knows we have shores on the Atlantic and Pacific, plus the significant shoreline of the Great Lakes, but many don't realize we also have shoreline on the Arctic Ocean via northern AK.

I remember when there was a big earthquake centered in southern Illinois (part of the New Madrid seismic zone in Missouri) in 1968. We lived in south central Wisconsin at the time. I was playing playing outside and I felt the ground lurch under me for a couple of seconds. I never thought earthquake until I saw the news that evening. We get tornadoes and blizzards, not earthquakes.

Contiguous means the 48 states that touch, which means everywhere except Alaska and Hawaii, where Mt. Whitney is in Cali. However the tallest mountain in the US is Denali in Alaska, but when you say the contiguous or the lower 48 states that means you are not counting Alaska and Hawaii. One thing Alaska and Hawaii are left out of often for them being so much farther away is good deals online. Many shippers don't want to ship to them since it costs so much more. The other day I bought some video games that were like half off from a new Amazon subsidiary called Woot! and they said in a disclaimer that it didn't include residents of Hawaii and Alaska, and even Puerto Rico is much closer and isn't part of these shipping exemptions normally.

The 101 freeway in California runs north and south except some portions of it was east and west but going west the sign will say the north and going east the sign will say south. So I can understand the north south freeways in Virginia.

In regards to cities being in counties, I am surprised he didn't also mentioned that you can live in a city that is unincorporated community within a country. I live in Reston, VA and we are not a "city" as in other place, there is no local government or police department, etc. these are provided by the county we are located in. The govt here is ran by an association. Its pretty interesting to say the least.

There is no water in that part of Nevada and there is a huge water shortage in Nevada already. Nevada's contract for Colorado River water has just been reduced. That reduction also effects Arizona and California who have been purchasing the water for decades.

I agree Kabir, you don't need to make use of every single part of the world. Some parts are untouched by people and it's fine to leave it at that. It would be a useless endeavor anyways. Not only would it destroy the natural habitat that has evolved to live in desert climates, but the water sent there would just evaporate away. It's the water table that really needs the work. The USA has a habit of draining water tables, it's apparently an issue happening in the great plains area. Plus the sandy soil wouldn't be great for growing very much.

There are farms in Nevada. But it has hurt the environment by taking water from places like walker river which has turned walker lake, a salt lake, even saltier. Which is hurting endemic fish in the lake. There are not many places for Nevada to take the water from except the Colorado River. And L.A won't let that happen.

The business where you go north on Interstate 77 while going south on Interstate 81 also happens with Interstates 80 and 580 in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's just not practical to build cities where there's no water for miles around. Phoenix is in the middle of a desert, but it's right next to the Gila River. Las Vegas is near the Colorado River and Lake Mead (created by Hoover Dam). There are no rivers of lakes in that big, sparsely population section of Nevada.

According to Wikipedia, West St. Paul, Minnesota, got that name because it lies on the west bank of the Mississippi River. There is a short, east-west section of the beltway highway around Boston where you will be travelling simultaneously north on Interstate 93 and south on Massachusetts Route 128, or vice versa. The original video might not be correct about the two nineteenth century earthquakes in Missouri and South Carolina, since their intensities can only be estimated.

I live in Texarkana, Texas (pronounced TEX-er-kana) and the gentleman in the video is wrong about Texarkana, Texas and Texarkana, Arkansas being one city. We are twin cities. Yes, we have a federal post office/courthouse downtown that sits on the state line. But we are in different counties (Bowie and Miller),have different mayors, city councils, area codes, zip codes, police departments, fire departments, school districts, sales taxes, and even local laws. I work on State Line Avenue, and yes, it's called that because the state line runs right in the middle of the turning lane so if you're in said turning lane, you are in both states at the same time. Until recently, you could purchase alcohol on the Arkansas side, but not on the Texas side, because it was legal in Miller County, but not in Bowie County. So driving down State Line Ave. all the liquor stores were on one side of the street but not the other. Our law enforcement and fire departments do work in cooperation with each other, but are separate entities. It is uncommon, but not unique. Other twin cities tend to be divided by something substantial like a river, while we are separated by a line down the middle of a 5 lane road. If you ever come to the U.S. come see us!
