The problem is they're building these giant mansions in a normal suburban neighborhood, or a low income neighborhood. No person coming in looking for a mansion is gonna want it in one of these neighborhoods. They'll never sell at market value for other houses of that size

Also the property taxes become WAY more than they can afford. The show would do so much better by building more modest houses, they can help more families out but of course that's not dramatic enough for TV 🙄
@sunnydays8270
@sunnydays8270 Ай бұрын
@g-urts5518 it's called 'over built for the area.' If u sell or refi you won't get the value you think you would since u need 3 comps within 3 miles of the subject property that are similar..

It may be that way now, but it certainly has not been that way always…at least one time.

These homes are usually given to people who were struggling to make ends meet. After the makeovers the homeowner was usually left with a property tax bill that they couldn't afford. A family in Fairbanks, Alaska was a recipient of a makeover and after the rebuild they were left with a house that was not properly insulated for the minus 50 degree winters. They also had to pay taxes to the IRS on the increased value of the home because the increased value is considered income by the IRS. The property taxes went from $2,500 per year to $11,000 per year. And the heating bills tripled.

It's not the families' fault that the show didn't take into consideration what the families could afford to maintain. The people who complained about them selling the homes should either step up and help with the extra expenses incurred by these families or keep their mouths shut.

I remember hearing that it’s actually bad to surprise gift someone a pet because now you’re forcing them to take responsibility for a life they never asked for. Now imagine it’s a mansion!

These homes were VERY expensive, in the wrong neighborhoods, and this show was on during the Great Recession when home values fell dramatically.

Kabir, thank you for playing this video. I used to watch this show and never missed an episode. I had no idea this was going on. After reading the comments it makes sense as these homes were families on their last cent and the show did go way overboard. 🇺🇸

A lot of the neighbors were very upset as well because the increased value of the replacement home was so great that it drove the assessed value of surrounding properties higher as well. The show not only built houses that the recipients couldn't afford the increased expenses on but drove up the tax bills for the neighbors as well. On the house built in Fairbanks, Alaska the neighbors saw an average increase of $1,800 to their property tax bills each year. The show also cut corners in the construction process to meet the shows timeline and the next year after having trouble heating the house the family found out that their new home didn't pass the minimum standard for building codes. They had to take out a $300,000 loan to pay contractors to bring the house up to code and mitigate the mold problem caused by the inadequate insulation for the climate which was also causing health problems that the new house was supposed to solve in the first place.

A house on Davis Islands Florida in Tampa was at the end of a small regional airport. A plane took off one day and immediately lost power and crashed into a house bursting into flames destroying the house. Their insurance said they didn't cover this scenario. So Pennington and his crew built them a new house. The residents loved the house.

Some states have homestead exemptions that exempt a home from a forced sale of assets ordered by a bankruptcy judge. That could be an explanation how they were able to keep their house after bankruptcy. In a state without homestead protection, that house would've been taken away from that family without a doubt. Some states go even further to exempt a certain amount of personal property and/or personal vehicles with the idea that a family shouldn't lose essentials like their home, furniture, and mode of transportation just because mom or dad got into too much debt.

I got to watch one of the homes being built! Found out while on vacation at my folks in Florida that the next morning the build would start and I always loved the show! Long story short, Neighbors behind and next to the house were put up in nice hotels for the week. The show asked to use neighbors lawns for equipment promising, and they did in fact, sod and landscape the lawns afterwards.That was well over 20 years ago and as of three years ago the family still lives there. Mind you, the house sticks out like a sore thumb in the midst of "normal" homes!

A friend’s father did something like that back in my hometown. The family had the money so they bought three plots of land in a row in a new neighborhood and built a massive house. But because it was the only one on the block the house was way under valued. This was not on a tv show they just did it on their own.

One great home makeover show on NBC I love to watch is George to the Rescue! The makeovers are usually for one or two specific rooms (so they never demolish the entire home) and the stories are great and heartwarming. The episodes are short and sweet (20 minutes long) on KZfaq so if you ever want to watch some smaller makeovers happen, that's one I would recommend :)

I used to love this show. Most people don't understand or think about the tax consequences after the fact. They did find a loophole to do the work, so the family was not responsible for the expense, but the ongoing annual taxes made it impossible to keep. Also, with the speed of construction, the house it likely shotily put together.

I used to live in neighborhood they got a house. I got one is extreme makeover. It was nice from the outside nice and inside, but luckily, the rest of the neighborhood was still on par with the approval of the house, but the family did try to sell it just too much for them to handle. It was way too much maintenance when you have a bowling alley in your house. It is a lot

A neighbor of ours whose house was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy , had her house raised up , replaced her deck and garage and redid her kitchen and bathrooms . The city came around looked at the improvements she had made and raised her property taxes by $14,000 a year .The lower level of our house was flooded and we had about $150,000 in damage , but it wasn't visible from the outside so the tax assessor didn't come to us and we got no tax increase .

A lot of the times improvements jack up the property value leading to not being able to pay the bill. Also a lot of these shows didn't do good work and things started to fall apart right after they leave so they end up having to pay for repairs anyway on top of the higher property tax. It doesn't matter if you have a million dollar house if you live in a neighborhood where the average home cost is half a million. They would still have a mortgage on the new house.
@gailw415
@gailw415 Ай бұрын
Unfortunately when you remodel a home you have to be careful to at least leave part of the original home standing or the city will assess the property with taxes on the fair market value of the new home. That could triple or quadruple the property taxes of the original home. Struggling families can’t afford that. They’re hard to sell too because these over the top designs don’t match the neighborhood.

They didn’t have to go so over the top. Add rooms, replace the windows, doors, knock down walls, but keep the basic square footage as needed. Keep taxes and utilities affordable. The first few episodes were like that.

Most people in the US want to buy a house that they like as is. There was a house near me that didn't sell for months because of the ugly wallpaper. My friend bought it at a 25% discount.

They clearly were shoddily-built if the cost of power went up so much. That sounds like a horribly-insulated house, which I've seen mentioned as something they were guilty of in another comment.

It was way much worse than that. Some people went to extremes to be on the show, like families that took in orphans that lost their parents then when they got what they wanted kicked out the children or faked their kids illnesses to get improved houses. There are other videos that go on about how bad Extreme Home Makeover Edition in more detail. I liked Tabitha's Takeover more because she showed how you can make improvements to keep businesses afloat without going overboard and as long as you applied yourself and employees. She also returned to see how some of them fared after she was done. Some failed and some succeeded pre covid of course.

Tabitha, is she the British lady with the short blond hair that mainly focused on turning beauty salons around? If we're thinking about the same person then yes, I agree she's great. I would watch her show regularly when it was on Bravo in the U.S.

I wouldn't feel bad. At its core it's a good premise, to help those in need. Unfortunately the showbiz side and entertainment factor of it took precedence over what would be best for the families in the long run.

So many of these reality shows, including, I'm sorry to say, Judge Judy, follow the same script. Find someone in dire circumstances and talk then into giving up their last shred of dignity for a few bucks, with no thought for the consequences. No thanks.

Well the court shows are essentially glorified 3rd party mediators, the producers track down a pending small claims case, contact all parties and offer them a spot on the show to settle the matter if they drop the case. The difference is both parties get paid for being on the show, but if they win the amount of the judgement is deducted from that. Decision on the show is still legally binding though.
