I'm glad you took the suggestion. Now I can give you the backstory behind that ending you wouldn't know if you weren't a hardcore MLS fan. First, Crepeau, the goalkeeper that was sent off. He broke his leg right there. He saw the run and decided he was going to sacrifice everything to stop it. Even if it had stayed a yellow, he was done for the next 3 months. But this is what led to the absolute, worst nightmare scenario that Union team could have ever found themselves in. Facing John McCarthy in an MLS cup penalty shootout. See before John joined LAFC, ealier that year he had played for the Union. He was the number 2 on that team behind Andre Blake who is considered one of the absolute best goalkeepers in the league. Top 3 easy. So John never got to see game minutes. So what his coach decided he was going to do, is turn John into a penalty specialist. So all that guy did for like 2 years was take penalties over and over and over against, you guessed it. The very same guys he faced in this MLS cup game. No keeper in the league knew how each of those guys would take penalties quite like John would. He's taken hundreds of shots from those dudes. John must have been inside their heads the moment they realized they were going to have to face him. He already knew every trick, talked with them about their shots after practice. He knew their penalties inside and out. So as you saw, that ended how it did because the Union had one of the worst strings of awful, terrible luck I have ever seen in a final. Absolutely brutal for the Union. It's like the gods willed them to lose as much as LAFC did everything right to win. Absolutely bonkers game. Glad you liked it my dude.

This is the greatest match I’ve ever been to live. This was the only match I’ve been to where I actually cried, and it was uncontrollable sobs on my end once it was over. Super exhausting but incredibly rewarding, especially for Vela who could rest a bit knowing he finally brought the cup to this proper club. Best team in the East vs the best in the west at a cup final. These two head to head usually play to a muti goal draw coming in to this match. England had the awesome Man City vs Liverpool fixtures and subsequent title race, at that same year America had LAFC vs The Union. Even better when you realize that neither side has ever played in a MLS Cup Final until this match. No one knew who was really the better side heading into this match, and to be honest, this match still hasn’t fully cleared that up either. Max Crepeau breaking his leg (fibia and tibia)clean in two, (costing himself a trip to what would’ve been his first World Cup ever representing Canada just two weeks later) having to get sent off while being carted off with a potentially career altering injury all to keep LAFC in contention to finally win a cup final as they were destined to do. John McCarthy coming in against his former club from his hometown no less in a penalty shootout against the goalkeeper of the year in Andre Blake who happened to consistently start over him while he was at Philly. LAFC in their short five year history on the pitch were built to be the giants of the league. Essentially the American FC Barcelona stylistically, only to falter in major tournaments. Should’ve won the US Open Cup in their first year in 2018, only to falter to the champions in pens, were the best team in the league in 2019 nearly premier league quality according to many pundits, only to lose most of their midfield to injury and lose in the Semifinal to eventual MLS Cup winners Seattle. Should’ve won the Concacaf Champions League in 2020, only to lose their star deep lying playmaker in Atuesta with a bs red card the prior fixture and still managed to outplay Tigres in the final for about 70 minutes before losing 2-1. The same Tigres who would go on to make it to the Club World Cup Final against UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munich that year and only lost 1-0. LAFC on their best day were much better than that side. Until this match they not only never won a proper cup even though they absolutely deserved to, but they never even won a penalty shootout. John McCarthy only had two starts all year, last time out he lost a Pen shootout missing some key saves that he should’ve made against Club America in front of 72,000 supporters at SOFI Stadium four months prior. He clearly learned his lesson and was deservingly named MLS Cup MVP after this match and is at the moment the No 1 keeper for a club coming off a historic cup double. That match changed his life and all Angelinos alongside him forever. The City of Angels are black and gold. Not only the greatest MLS Cup Final ever, it’s quite possibly the greatest and most important MLS match ever. What a way for Gareth Bale to sign off on his club career heading into his one World Cup, in his first minutes back from a minor injury keeping him out for the past month, he finds a way to somehow out jump 6ft 6in Jack Elliot who was on a brace, jumping into the heavens to save the title in order for John to win it against the club who didn’t play him, but what a match to have in MLS before starting a massive new era for the league with MLS Season Pass on Apple…

From the MLS, the MLS Cup winner, the Supporter Shield winner, the US Open Cup winner and the other season Conference winner qualifies for the CONCACAF Champions League. There is a 5th spot that is reserved for the Canadian Cup winner which is normally an MLS club.

@@gracielynn9623 which is only a thing because of money and nothing else. Instead of the leagues cup, the best MLS and Liga MX sides should be included in the Copa Libertadores. Yes, there are millions of Americans who love soccer football, including myself. I'm a 63 year-old man who has loved football since the age of 8, when I saw my first game on television. I also live near St. Louis, Missouri and its deep history of football. When I was a schoolboy, St. Louis had a team in the previous top level football league before MLS, the North American Soccer League, which existed from 1968 to 1984. My first ever football match was the St. Louis Stars vs New York Cosmos at Busch Stadium in St. Louis in 1977. The Stars won 2-0, holding football legend Pele goalless. This was Pele's final season with the Cosmos. As is common with other U.S. and Canada sports leagues, the season champion is decided by a post-season tournament, not by who finishes at the top of the table at the end of the season. The winner of the MLS Cup playoffs is recognized as league champion. The U.S. is allotted 4 places in the CONCACAF Champions League, which go to the MLS Cup Champion, the MLS Supporter's Shield winner (team that finishes at the top of the regular season table), the U.S. Open Cup Champion (American version of the FA Cup, played for since 1913), and the MLS team with the best point total not already qualified.

I just learned about the MLS at the start of the 2022 season. I’ve lived in the United States my whole life, and I still barely even knew that we had a soccer league. I am now a diehard fan. I even travel to away games if I can, sometimes driving 12 hours one way. I’ve gone back and tried to watch games from 10 15 even 20 years ago and they are unwatchable. I cannot believe the growth in quality in such a short period of time.

I have been a ⚽ fan, here in America, since the mid 1970s. I never thought I would live to see football of this quality, with this level of interest and passion, in my country. I'm from neither Philadelphia, nor Los Angeles. I don't support either club. But, they helped to validate a long wait. Not ashamed to say, I got a little emotional, while watching this match.

So you made a mention with a question about if this was the game between the top two teams overall in the league playing for the cup. Last year that’s what it came down to, because Philadelphia and LAFC finished top of their respective conferences and were able to defend their regular season position in the playoffs, but it’s not always like that. Let me explain… First of all rather than a promotion/relegation system, MLS has a closed offf system like other American leagues and they have a playoff instead. Starting this year here’s how the format will work… Play in game: the teams finishing 8 and 9 in each conference will play, with the 8 seat hosting the single elimination game. The winner of the game gets to move into the conference quarterfinals. Conference quarterfinals: the conference quarterfinals, the top seven teams in each conference, plus the winner of the play in game in each conference, will play a best of three series, that is, a multi game series that is not on aggregate but rather on who can simply win two games first. The bottom seat will play the one seat, the seven will play the two, and so on. The higher seat will host game one and if necessary game three, with the lower seat hosting game two. The winner will move onto the conference semifinals. Conference semifinals: the four remaining teams in the conferences will each play a single elimination game. The two winners in each conference will move onto the conference finals. Conference finals: the final two teams remaining in each conference will play a single elimination game at the home of the team with the better record. The winner moves onto MLS Cup Final. MLS Cup Final: the two conference winners based on the playoffs, not regular season record, will go head-to-head at the home stadium of the team with more points in the regular season standings. It’s a winner take all game, and the winner of this game finally wins MLS cup. Conclusion: the regular season is 34 games that goes from the last weekend in February until the middle of of October. Based on the format above we then have the playoffs that start at the end of October and conclude with MLS cup final near the beginning of December. I hope that helps. :)

Although it pains me to say so, as a Nashville SC fan, this was, without a doubt, a title fight between the two best teams in the league. And what a match they delivered! Timing was indeed perfect as a launch pad into both World Cup and the new Apple TV+ deal... And, just to play up my hometown boys, who are one and one against LA... Bought my tickets a month ago to their April 22nd showdown in Geodis Park -- the largest, loudest soccer stadium in the USA or Canada. Can't wait to see NSC and LAFC clash again in the RING of FIRE!
