Nope they dont re-run the play after a ref gets hit. It just goes to the next down

My older kids were in band and I would go to the marching band contests. The first time I saw an on field judge get run into and over I asked how the band members could do that. The reply was simple. The band members have places they have to be or the show doesn’t work and the band gets docked points. Because of this occasionally the judge will be knocked down or slapped in the head with an instrument. It’s the same way with the officials at a game. Everyone has a place to be and sometimes the places overlap.

Are you out of your mind. This game moves so fast, and players are hitting each other, the Ref has no idea which way he will go. In all of these cases the Ref did not have time to get out of the way. The Ref's have to be in specific positions on the field. Sometimes the ball or players hit them.

Dodging is also made more difficult because the officials are often running backwards or sideways.

The ref is just part of the field so they do not rerun the play. Unless they run into Ed Hochuli , then the player gets carted off.

In every sport where the officials are on the playing surface, they are considered to be part of the field. There are rules in baseball and softball, however, that deal with a batted ball that strikes an umpire, but in general the game just goes on.

The pop bottle to the refs head occured, because Minnesota fans thought Drew Pearson interfered with Nate Wright. The Cows went to the Super Bowl to play against Terry Bradshaw and that Steel Curtain defense. I saw that game and thought the same thing for years.

I don't know if they're too slow, their first priority is to keep an eye on the game no matter what happens.

That hit at 6:13 was on line judge Sarah Thomas. She can be seen saying, "I'm alright." But, she actually had a broken wrist. She finished the game, though. Beautiful and tough lady.

The physical condition to just be considered for the NFL is crazy. It's easy to say refs should get out of the way but the speed is insane. 4.2 sec is a normal speed for a offense lineman in the 40 yard dash, guys that are often near or over 300 Lb. The smaller guys consider that slow. And by smaller we are talking in the 180 to 210 Lb guys.

4.2 40 yard dash is NOT a common speed for the NFL and ESPECIALLY for OL lol look at the history of the combine 4.2 speed is for elite RBs and WRs for the most part

Each official has a part of the teams he’s assigned to watch and so often isn’t seeing something coming from him outside of the space he’s observing, until it’s too late.

4:46 I would have found it hilarious if the dig diwn in the pile and find the ref recovered the ball.

Kabir, if the refs were quick enough to avoid or move away from the hits they would be playing the game and not officiating it!! Also about the size of NFL players! 200lbs? Are you kidding? Perhaps the smallest player on the field is 200. The linemen can be upwards of 300-350lbs? That would hurt! Peace out...

Not if they're not big enough would they be. I couldn't imagine Usain Bolt playing football. He's built different than these guys. I think he means hurt, as in extreme injury. They don't cart most of them off so it's hard to tell if they're "hurt". Not that much of a stretch when you see some of these players going off being carried or on a stretcher. The guy who interrupted the pass is the only one who looked knocked out and the dog pile one was probably in bad shape.

It's like golf. If it hits the ref you gotta play it as it lies, no do overs.

Ref is part of playing field… they do not replay… it’s hard to run backwards from a player cutting left or right… ref has to watch the play so can’t turn around and run away

If a ref interferes with a play, they should be able to play that down again. The offense loses a down when that happens.

Imagine being shorter, lighter, and without padding in the middle of a play - for the entire game. Surprised they aren't injured more.

It’s easy for all of us to say that, the Ref shouldn’t have been there, but it’s their job to make sure that everything is on the up and up, to make sure that there is no cheating or rule breaking. Be honest, if any of us were down there on the Field could we predict what the players and the Football for that matter, be where they’re supposed to be. It’s a “Crapshoot”, all the way around.

The players never hit a ref full on. The refs usually know how to avoid contact, and the players do their best to avoid a collision with an official. If a player purposely touches a ref, then he's ejected from the game

Nope.....they dont run plays over. In American football, the refs are considered just another part of the field. Sometimes they get caught up. On the pass that the ref got ran over, he was reaching for his flag because the guy guarding the receiver held his Jersey when he cut inside.

The officials are in shape. They're nowhere near in shape like nfl players. Believe me, the game's A LOT FASTER if you're in the middle of it. They can't react as fast.

Most of the refs are in their 40s or older. They are not going to move like a 23 year-old in his prime. Moreover, all the players are over 200 pounds and they are covered in pads. You are not going to be able to get out of the way either. It's dangerous, but these refs have a lot of experience and that why they are there.

Nah, I want an old dude or dudette who has been around the game forever, has seen it all, heard it all, been there, done that, to call plays even if they can't sprint at high speed, rather than someone who's barely new to the sport of the BS players like to try to convince the refs is legit. It's fairly rare that they get hit, but sh*t happens, they laugh it off if they're okay, and the game goes on.

These refs are running all over the field during the game. I would say you have to be somewhat fit to do that job. And they are not wearing all the protection the players are wearing.

8:05 - kickers are notoriously bad tacklers, and usually the worst athletes on the team. But that was a poor attempt even for a kicker
