I’m kinda in two mindsets about fighting in the modern game. 1. If it’s a dirty hit?. Sure go after the guy, jump in, drop your gloves, defend your teammate, make your opponent answer the bell 2. If it’s a CLEAN, hard hit?. Let it go… You don’t have to fight after every CLEAN, hard hit. And this is what happens now. Far too often…. General rule of thumb? If it’s clean?, your teammate will get STRAIGHT BACK UP Hockey players are the TOUGHEST ATHLETES ON THE PLANET. If not?. They’re HURT and THAT is when you jump in. You DON’T have to fight after EVERY hard hit It annoys me.

“When they’re knocked out, they leave the game right?” Nowadays, yes. They'd be taken off and monitored for a concussion. But, back in the day, they'd return all the time. For example, 3:22, he returned and scored the game winning goal. Although, he's since said he has no memory of that entire game.

Not the best compilation but not bad. A lot of those were dirty hits. To answer a couple of your questions: When a player takes a long run (3 or 4 strides clearly aiming to hit the player) it can be called (at the referee's discretion) as a charging penalty (minor or major, 2 or 5 minutes). If a player hits another player from behind into the boards, that can be called as a boarding penalty (minor or major). In the last 15 or so years they've really tightened up the calls on those hits, but they still happen. Enforcers don't exist like they used to, although there are plenty of players who can and do fight. But the days of the traditional hockey goon are passed. A lot of the old footage in that video are plays that are still notorious for ending players' careers (Paul Kariya especially). The Subban hit on Marchand is a beauty.

Subban's hit was clean and devastating. Marchand head was up and Subban's timing was perfect. Wonder if Marchand ever gave him a kiss for that.

It's playoff hockey right now. If you can watch, you should. A lot of the fighting is being discouraged, but it still happens a lot. Most of these hits - especially the hits to the head - aren't allowed now since we know that they are so bad. In the NHL, if they are hit that badly, they are taken off/leave the game, esp for a hit to the head. It is an awesome sport.

There is now a concussion protocol. Fighting is still part of the game. Back in the day you would try to win by intimidating the other team. The enforcer has a much smaller role. I think you would enjoy the NHL Playoffs.

Kabir please watch the video How one violent hit snowballed into years of championship hockey between the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche, this was one of the biggest rivalries in hockey back in the 90's and early 2000s, when the 2 teams played each other it was a must watch for hockey fans, it was war on ice

Yeah fighting is still allowed. The playoffs are going on right now and it's the conference finals for west/east It's been a great playoffs so far. Not your typical teams making it. Also, Boston broke the wins record in the regular season and then lost in the first round lol. Also nhl glass is tempered glass. So when it is a lot more sturdy than your regular window pane glass. I remember your NHL hits video from way back in the day lmao. So this was a nice callback reaction to a different one with more updated hits. Enforcers are a thing and if you're interested in an entertaining movie about one with Sean William Scott, watch "Goon".

“When they’re knocked out, they leave the game right?” Not necessarily. I played for 20-odd years and I’ve been knocked out 4 times - all during high school hockey. I was back on the ice as soon as I finished recovering my wits on the bench for a few minutes. If you aren’t otherwise injured (and even if they are) most players would elect to keep playing. The only time I went off the ice after getting knocked out was to go to the locker room and sew up a gash in my chin, then it was right back to the game.
@DaveWossum
@DaveWossum Жыл бұрын
to add to this the NHL has concussion spotter that can force a player to leave the game. They sometimes leave the play, go to a 'quiet room' where they are monitored. They can return to the game later too.

"Holy Mackinaw" got to love Joe Bowen I miss him doing the Leafs games on TSN and Sportsnet. Its not the hit that hurts it is the sudden stop when your eye balls and your mucus membrane keep going forward as you stop trust me I have had my share getting hit in this game as a younger man. Back when I was teen playing in the 80s you got hit got up the coach would ask you how many fingers if you were close they let you keep playing not like today.

Yeah, fighting still happens. The NHL has only made token efforts to get rid of it - extra penalties for instigators which just make it so that both guys drop the gloves at the same time (so they don't know who to give the instigator penalty to). Lower leagues have tried to reduce or eliminate it and mostly succeeded; there were certain college hockey rivalries where you could count on a line brawl every weekend in the early '90s, but when the NCAA made it an automatic one-game suspension (and escalating for every additional incident), it basically went away. The AHL (the level below the NHL) has a rule that institutes automatic suspensions starting with the 10th fight in a season, but you have to be pretty much a dedicated "enforcer" to reach that level. If anything, fighting seems to be on the upswing in the NHL right now - you'll see a lot of guys start a fight even after a clean (but hard) hit, which used to be pretty rare. All-out line brawls are less common, though.

The NHL doesn't necessarily want to penalize the "fighting" so much as what many write off as "dirty" tactics. They don't mind the checking (shoving someone into the barrier) as much as they do someone tripping their opponent or sweeping their leg while skating. The former is more theatrical in nature (and often has less serious injuries) while latter is more likely to inflict serious brain damage.

3:52 A lot of these hits are legal (at least back in the day some of them were) but this hit is NOT legal in _modern times,_ and Mark Scheifele (player in navy blue; Winnipeg Jets) was suspended 4 games for it. Jake Evans (player in white; Montréal Canadiens), who was celebrating his 25th BIRTHDAY, was stretchered off and missed the rest of the 2nd and 3rd playoff rounds due to a concussion. Scheifele had a subsequent hearing in which he explained his actions as "trying to negate a goal". 3:50 If you rewind a bit and look very closely, Scheifele deliberately SLOWS DOWN to glide into his hit on Evans. He was so focused on hitting Evans, he made no attempt to poke the puck away from the empty net, which is a complete CONTRADITION of what he said during his hearing. Some fans have said Evans was in the wrong because he had his head down, but I will refute that by saying Evans had his head down to make sure that the puck went into the net, NOT because he was being careless. Perhaps I'm being a bit biased since I am a Canadiens fan but I wince every time I see this hit, it was completely unnecessary.

Be Wary of any video claiming to be the Greatest of "all time" when half the clips are clearly within the last 10 years. A lot of the creators just don't like 480p vhs caliber footage. This has some good ones but like you Scott Stevens alone has hits that are more violent than 20% of these. I might have missed it but is his hit on Paul Kariya on here?

I'll never forget I went to a NY Rangers game in oh, 1991 or so. I had a ton of fun watching in general, but (and I don't remember the players involved) at one point a player just DESTROYED another player against the glass and the glass literally exploded and the guy hit was just knocked out. He left the game (but came back for the crowd before the game ended and got a standing ovation from most of the crowd).
