Gator takes just like whatever it's cooked in, which is probably why so many people think it tastes like chicken. Try it plain, and it has no special taste. Let me explain American biscuits and gravy to you in a way more friendly to what you're accustom to. The biscuits are very similar to scones, but more tender and moist and flakey instead of dry and crumbly, and are good with both sweet and savory things. The gravy for this dish is more like a bechamel where the roux gets it's fat from minced sausage (the liquid fat in the pan from browning the sausage) and the sauce is finished with a lot of black pepper. The gravy is dished up over biscuits that have been horizontally halved and eaten with a fork. It's not uncommon to find this topped with eggs and hot sauce for a full breakfast.

White gravy is a pretty common southern classic. It's a flour and dairy based gravy that's traditionally made by adding the ingredients to a hot pan after cooking a fatty meat like sausage or bacon. The taste is very different from brown gravy, but it's extremely hearty and accompanies biscuits and a slab of sausage or some bacon perfectly. It's one of the low-cost and filling foods that helped build the industry of the rural US by feeding countless truckers, steel mill workers, coal miners, linemen, and foresters. A real classic.

As someone who grew up in California and went to college in Texas I feel like you can't really compare In-N-Out and Whataburger. They are both good for totally different things. In-N-Out is consistent and cheap but there isn't any verity. Whataburgers are more hit and miss depending on how the location is run but when one is run right they have some really good unique fast food burgers. Also honey butter chicken biscuits from Whataburger will cure all hangovers.
@SaguaroBlossom
@SaguaroBlossom Жыл бұрын
I've never heard of McDonald's having biscuits and gravy, but it's very common at many other restaurants around the US. White gravy is more of a cream sauce. It's made using a roux of butter/meat drippings and flour, with milk as the liquid. Brown gravy is made with broth, (usually Beef Broth) for the liquid, hence the brown color. (There's also chicken and turkey gravy that's like a tan/pale yellow, mostly only seen at Thanksgiving and maybe Christmas.) When making Sausage gravy, you can cook the sweet breakfast sausage in the pan, then use the sausage drippings as the fat to make the gravy. Sausage gravy needs to totally smother the biscuits, and requires a fork and knife to eat it, not just dipping. Sooo yummy! Country gravy (no sausage in it) is also used on Chicken Fried Steak and Chicken Fried Chicken. (similar to Weinerschnitzel, but with steak or chicken instead of veal) Mr and Mrs H have recently made proper Biscuits and Gravy and Chicken Fried Steak with Country Gravy, and they both really liked them. I'm one of the many people VERY glad Taco Bell just brought back the Mexican Pizza. They also have Nacho Fries right now that are very tasty. (seasoned fries with nacho cheese for dipping.) I think In 'n Out is very overrated. Whataburger is miles ahead!
@Jeff_Lichtman
@Jeff_Lichtman Жыл бұрын
The gravy in biscuits and gravy is white because it's made with milk or cream. Frozen custard is like ice cream that's made from an egg custard that's heavy on the eggs. It's even more rich and creamy than regular ice cream. It's most common in the midwest. I've had it in St. Louis and Milwaukee. Sliders were invented by White Castle, a chain that's mostly in the upper midwest. Krystal is a southern chain. I guess Ask Mojo decided that Krystal is the better of the two. You can get frozen White Castle sliders in a lot of supermarkets.

The basic white gravy recipe my grandmother taught me is an easy one to remember (2, 2, and 1) - 2 tablespoons fat (like meat drippings or butter) 2 tablespoons flour, 1 cup milk. You brown the flour in the fat then slowly stir in the milk - making sure to get out any lumps of flour. For pepper gravy you just generously add black pepper. For sausage gravy you would use loose cooked minced sausage with its fat. You can substitute pretty much any other meat and its fat. Another popular one in some areas of the US is hamburger gravy, made with minced hamburger.

I ate alligator in NY and here in Florida. It looked like chicken nuggets and tasted like tough chicken. $15 for fast food is expensive in the US. Everywhere else, there isn't reason to spend more than $9 for a meal.

You can also think of white gravy as a cream sauce. Add breakfast sausage chunks and black pepper to a roux, then add some cream and let it thicken up. You can dip the biscuit, split it across the middle or break it up and smother it with white gravy. But its not a beef gravy on a dry hard english biscuit.

Fried alligator tastes a lot like a chicken nugget, especially if you dip it in a sauce. Never tried it in sausage form though. If you've ever seen the movie Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, the chain featured there is more common in the north but extremely similar to Krystal. Although their 5 for $5 menu has gone up a bit lately, its still pretty good. Sometimes you just get that craving... White gravy is generally thicker than brown, both good for different things. Putting white gravy on a biscuit is amazing though. I'd rather get it from Hardee's than McDonalds though. Cookout is amazing if you want a lot food for relatively cheap price. Not the fanciest menu in the world, but great value and pretty tasty.

North Carolinian here. Cookout is a NC based chain with mostly locations in NC. It has a menu featuring burgers, hot dogs, Eastern NC style BBQ, fries and other such things. They also have a giant array of milkshakes. The food is prepared "cookout style" so basically it tastes like it just came off the grill at a backyard cookout (called a barbeque in some parts of the country). That tray is one of the best deals in fast food I know of and Cookout locations are open late. The one in my town is open until like 4am and pretty much the only thing is. The line for the drive thru stretches out into the road sometimes...like 30+ cars. But remarkably fast. The only thing I kinda dislike about them is their milkshakes have the consistency of ice cream and you really have to eat them with a spoon. Oh and I should also mention the prices do vary but the most expensive tray I've ever seen was $6.99 which is still a bargain. The one in my area is still $4.99. There's also a Jr Tray which just has a smaller main item. I should mention also that if you want extras on your burger they cost more and those are tomatoes, cheese and bacon. Every other condiment and topping is free. To get a shake or float instead of a regular drink it's $1 more. Oh and as for your Whataburger or In-and-Out question I've had both and I prefer Whataburger but think both are insanely overrated. I said what I said lol

To eat is I tear the biscuits into bit sized chunks and pour the gravy then eat it with a spoon or fork. Their "sausage breakfast on a bun" is also great. Best breakfast sandwich I have ever had.

WhataBurger for sure! You can even get their biscuits but made with cheddar cheese and jalapenos in the biscuit itself. Getting biscuits and gravy or a sausage or chicken biscuit but with jalapeno\cheddar biscuits is the bomb! Their special custom SPICY ketchup is also really good and adds an extra kick for anything you regularly pur ketchup on. They ALSO have a SPECIAL jalapeno ranch dressing that you can add or substitute putting on something instead of ketchup or mustard or mayo. Dipping fries in the special ranch or ketchup are both really good options. WhataBurger is also known for really good shakes and they sometimes run special limited time flavors of shakes that only appear for a couple of months like Strawberry, Banana or Dr.Pepper flavored shakes among others. They also have pretty good onion rings for those that like onion rings (especially dipped in jalapeno ranch).

I'm from South Carolina and have a Cook-out across the road from where I live. I believe the tray is now 6-7$ but it's still a great deal with the amount of food you get. I also went out of my way when traveling for work. I went to In-N-Out when spending a few weeks in LA and the burger was very good but the fries weren't great. The fries need to be animal style for them to be edible but their spread is very similar to thousand island dressing. I also spent a month in Las Cruces, New Mexico and made sure to try Whataburger which unfortunately was a huge disappointment. It seemed to be more like a Burger King or Hardee's/Carl's Jr. I'd enjoy seeing you do food testing/ reviews. Curious to see any places unique to England or how others may differ from what we have here.

Cook out has some awesome barbecue sandwiches.. I want one now.. lol! Sonic has a whole lot of slushies and sodas to choose from and Cookout has a whole bunch of different milkshake combinations that you could get...I'm continuing to make myself hungry just talking about it...lol! I love those pork chop biscuits from Bojangles too, I just put some jelly, butter or honey on the biscuits and that's some dang good eats...Mmm, mmm!

Kabir, re. the biscuits & gravy, you separate the biscuits into 2 halves like a hamburger bun, then pour the (sausage) gravy over them. Re. Baja blast mtn. dew, in case you're not a geography nerd like I am, 'Baja' is the name for the peninsula of Mexico which extends for about 1000 mi./1600km. south of CA.

Biscuits and gravy are essentially a peppered bechamel sauce, often with ground sausage and sage added, spooned over buttermilk biscuits. It doesn't have to be eaten for breakfast. Nothing sticks to the ribs after a hard day's work like biscuits and gravy. Americans eat breakfast for dinner all the time. We call it brinner in my neck of the woods. Also, I would sub a Kabir Tries food channel. Try and change it up a little, though. Do something the other triers aren't doing, like grabbing a stranger and buying them the same meal and eating it with them. Something like that. But, I'd totally watch it.

Sonic is criminally underrated, my pops has worked with the cookout owner & he knows he could raise the prices but wants to keep the food affordable. Genius marketing & probably my favorite fast food place. Worked at bojangles everything’s fried except the veggies & biscuits, want cheese you can add it no worries

Kabir, biscuits and (sausage) gravy will change your life, but please for the love of everything if you come visit, don't use McDonald's as a benchmark. If you go anywhere in the southeast or Midwest, get it from a local diner or breakfast spot. You'll get way more, it'll probably be cheaper, and it for sure will be authentic and probably made by hand instead of just defrosted and warmed up.

In & Out vs Whataburger is very much a personal preference and most people will like one much more than the other (I live in San Antonio so I get a lot of exposure both to Texans and Californians, as well as random other states). I grew up in Buffalo NY and while most California things I have tried don't mesh with me, I prefer In & Out to Whataburger because it has a more cuisine/flavor vibe as opposed to the Texan pure carnivore make sure I know I'm eating meat meat meat vibe.

Biscuits and gravy is also big in the northern states, it is called country gravy or sausage gravy, but is sometimes called milk gravy. It is served over the biscuits and eaten that way. Some add eggs and hash browns with the biscuits and put the gravy on top of this. I just like it over my biscuits. I don't eat at fast food restaurants very often because it is cheaper to make the food at home. Many only sell one brand of soda. I don't like coke , I am a Pepsi fan and will pass on restaurants that only serve coke.

Yep, at cookout, you get the entree, like a burger or a chicken sandwich. Two sides, which could be fries onion rings or chicken nuggets even or a hot dog could be your side. And a drink for five bucks.

So, as a representative of the southeastern United States, I can attest to Cook Out. Great shakes, open till 3am everyday, and a good amount of food for an inexpensive price tag. The "tray" she is talking about is one main (like a burger) two sides and a drink. While it is a little more than 4.99 now, it is still only 6 dollars I believe. If you want a shake rather than a fountain drink, you add 1 dollar I believe.

Don’t know that you’ll get to the Midwest on your trip but in Nebraska we have a chain called Runxa (also a few in Colorado, Kansas and Iowa) that has great food. They get the name from meat pies that contain seasoned loose meat; however, their hamburgers are terrific too. In cold weather they have a chili soup and cinnamon roll meal that tastes great (I know it sounds like an odd combination).
