Kabir you need to find videos of the Amish people located in the states of Pennsylvania and Ohio. They are much more conservative. Look for Amish move a building if you want to see something impressive. Also Amish build a barn. They are known to be excellent craftsman and their furniture that they construct is outstanding.

I’d say they aren’t stuck in the 1920s or 1930s. More like the 1980s or early 1990s, all the while being isolationist. They didn’t have modern farm equipment or modern vehicles in the 1920s or 1930s like these people use.

@@torstenheling3830 As far as tech, yes...they are more advanced than the 30s, but their views are from even before that, so that is why I kinda averaged it out to the 1930s. I probably should have said that, but I did not want to type too much. But yeah, they use flip phones, so in that area they have definitely come up to the 1990s. 👍

@@iKvetch558 Yeah, that’s what it looks like to me. I’m 66 so I remember the 80s and 90s quite well, and we got along just fine without the internet (and without KZfaq). However, after giving this pretty interesting video some thought, it’s dawned on me that these people are not really anti-modern at all (I loved the shots of the dad driving around in what could be his new Mercedes with the air conditioning likely on, heated seats and power windows of course. Some 19th century lifestyle! LOL 😂.) What these people really are are isolationists. Notice they try their best to cut off their children’s access to information about the outside world? That’s why no education beyond the 8th grade, no internet (and of course KZfaq), no smartphones (because they include internet access). It’s simple. They are afraid of losing their children to the perceived „corruption“ of the world. That’s all that’s going on. (Their Bibles have nothing to say about the internet. That’s ridiculous. ) It’s a lot like living in a mind-controlling regime, like a North Korea (where the internet is also banned and education is limited to just the basics of how to read and write). Not as bad as that, of course, and I know the comparison is extreme, but the functioning of the community is strikingly similar in its outline. One good thing is, no one is held prisoner in these communities. Everyone is to leave anytime they like once they hit age 18. Then they can enjoy all the internet, music, KZfaq and education they like. It may come at a cost of being cut off from family, but that’s the price they’d have to pay I suppose.

It's funny. In the counties near where I live Lebanon, Lancaster and Berks counties in Pennsylvania, the Amish are far more conservative than the Mennonites. The Mennonites are business owners, they drive cars and trucks....Some paint their bumpers black. The Mennonites also operate Lancaster Mennonite school. It is K through12, like any other primary/high school. They offer AP (Advanced Placement/College) courses and brag a 100% acceptance rate to college. The Amish, on the other hand, offer schooling till 8th grade (13 or 14) years old. Some only 6th grade for girls. They farm and make their livings from their farms. Until recently, none had electricity in their homes. Some sects have decided that solar panels produce electricity from the sun, so that makes it God given. So....With the blessing of the elders, some homes now have solar panels installed.

I live in Lebanon county near the Lancaster and Dauphin county lines. All's the same here except Mennonite's vehicles are entirely black and their schools are tiny. The community is large and there's no way that their schools go all the way to grade 12. I'm happy that they do in your area and hopefully that will come our way. The kids are young when they start working in the stores here. Early teens would be my guess. The Mennonites are wonderful, friendly people who are always willing to give a hand when needed.

This is somewhat misleading. I live in the middle of a largely Mennonite area. In fact, two of my neighbors are Mennonite. They own many of the businesses here. Mostly agricultural based businesses and grocery stores. Notice all the tractors in the barn, they are very pricey. They have a lot of money that they don't donate to the church. The schools are tiny buildings that can't possibly have 8 classrooms but you frequently see the kids outside playing baseball, kickball, or another team sport. They're extremely nice people. I love having Mennonite neighbors.

Mennonite communities, like the Amish, vary wildly. Some are super strict, some lean towards modern things. The family in this film lean towards modern stuff. The men are wearing store bought clothes, the house is painted with colors and they have a car. They also have electricity. The Amish use oil lamps and horse and buggies. Both the Amish and the Mennonite are in many states so I don’t think there is a problem with inbreeding. The Mennonite do have cell phones so don’t let them fool you. They have businesses and living off the land they are very busy. Both Amish and Mennonite don’t pay taxes. The Amish use draft horses farming there land and as you saw the Mennonite use VERY expensive machinery. They are very wealthy. They are not dumb people. They get away with not paying taxes because they are a “church”.

As long as no one is forced into it, I see nothing wrong with living the way these folks live. They seem healthy and happy, and if they are so, then more power to them. We've become too overcome and obsessed with technology, to the point where few of us know how to do useful, real-world things like farming, canning, and dressing and preparing meat, not to mention making clothing and furniture. Seems fine to me. They're not hurting anybody, so why should I judge them badly?

They’re NOT living in the 1800s with their modern farm equipment, electricity, painted air-conditioned and centrally heated houses and air conditioned BMWs they drive, with power windows and heated seats. Give me a break. They’re an isolationist CULT. It’s as simple as that. And they’re harming their children by living this Jim Jones/ Peoples Temple Lifestyle. I hope their children have the sense to walk away from this CULT when they turn 18. They are legally free to do so, get an education and learn about the real world.

Amish and Mennonites are very widespread around the US, Canada, and some parts of Latin America. They generally have very good reputations in their communities and a lot of people like to buy what they make, be it food products, furniture, and they have great reputations as builders. They have stores and businesses and they work out how to live in the modern world and still keep their way of life. There's a lot of variation because the Anabaptists aren't centrally organized. So each community works it out in their own way.

If you think the Mennonites are strict in their shunning of the modern world you should see the Amish. Similar but even more extreme in their austerity. I grew up in NJ and we used to take school trips to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to visit the Amish. To be incredulous about living without internet or smart 😂 reveals the generation in which you were raised. I don't consider myself to be over the hill or out of touch, but I was raised at a time when home computers, the internet, and even cell phones hadn't been invented yet. We never felt like we were missing anything --that's just the way it was. We all accepted technology as it came along and have probably all looked back and wondered how we got along without cell phones in particular, but we did and it didn't seem painful because that's just the way the world was. 😂

There is also meeting people, going down the pub (I'm English), walking in the countryside etc. I sometimes have the feeling you KZfaqrs do nothing except sit in front of your computers all the time. The Internet etc can be useful, but sometimes can take up too much time, like it's the middle of the night and I should be asleep. Goodnight.

I think most of us know about the Mennonites! The guy in the video he’s watching at the very beginning said something that insinuated that not many people know about them. I’ve met people from both religions while in upstate New York where they are numerous because of the proximity to Pennsylvania, I guess, and they are always the nicest people. In that community you could tell which houses belonged to an Amish family because all of the front doors were painted blue. It was kinda cool. I know that the Mennonites use phones but for most Amish they’re strictly forbidden except in an absolute emergency. I was driving by an Amish’s crop fields and there was a little shed right where I was driving by and I watched 4 Amish kids hiding behind the shed talking on a phone. They looked like teenagers. All boys. My ex husband grew up in that town and he told me that the Amish kids went to his high school and they would use and play around with technology.A lot of Amish communities I’ve been around had a restaurant that they owned as one of their ways to make money and if you haven’t gone to one I highly suggest that you do and make sure you get a dessert! There’s one such place in north Georgia just south of Augusta and they have a restaurant but also in the building they have a gift shop with a ton of desserts. My family made the trip from Virginia to South Georgia very frequently and we had to go through Augusta and right by the restaurant/store so we always made a point of stopping to grab some desserts. They’re amazing and I don’t even care that they probably used Crisco to make them. That’s extremely high praise coming from me!

The original video maker was so respectful and non-judgemental of the people and their way of life. There is certainly a lot to be respected about the way they live. My issues would be: The lack of choice in how they live their lives- it's either all-in, or all out. There is no opportunity for anyone to take on careers or roles in the community that aren't within very strict boundaries. Also that there are things for which they are reliant on the outside world- they don't manufacture those cars and tractors themselves, and they need to trade with outsiders for many of the thing they have, whilst at the same time no-one from their community is able to be involved in those industries or trades themselves.

Like things passed down from grandparents I look at the Amish and Mennonites as a preservation of culture that maybe be of importance someday. A huge sun flare could come along and end satellite communication or WWIII could devastate civilization as we know it. These people have all the basics to rebuild their community. Many people outside of religion still choose to live off the 'grid' in remote areas and live off the land preserving our ancestors way of living. All these people can survive in the meagerest of environments and perhaps just maybe reteach others how to do so also.

My dad lived in Shelbyville, Indiana and dealt with a lot of Amish and Mennonite people. The local Walmart even had parking spaces just for their horse and buggies out on the side of the store. They seemed to be just normal people that choose to live differently than most of us. He always said they make a lot of money since they don't pay taxes and that they were tightwads. LOL I guess frugal would be a more appropriate term. I never had any bad interactions with them, other than being stuck behind one of their buggies and unable to get around them.

Becoming a dr wouldn’t just disrupt their support, but getting a higher education today would require them to adequately learn how to use the internet. There isn’t a single class that doesn’t require email or to use YT for educational purposes. The level of conviction a person would have to have to basically isolate themselves outside of doing class work to try to stay sort of true to their culture, would be intense.

Wow they are so friendly. The Amish are stricter. I don't know if they would have invited them in with their cameras. I have seen some Mennonite women at the store buying fabric before but I think for the most part they're self sustainable.

I graduated high school in 1970 in rural Ohio. My high school was basically run by Mennonites. I think my dad chose that area - tho he wasn't very religious - to raise his family because he was so opposed to alcohol. Wouldn't have anything to do with you if you drank. Mom was the same way. Other than a pre-school bible session for the Mennonites, it was just a regular high school. Of course, our dress code was a bit strict but the lunches were fabulous. :) We grew our own vegies - raised chickens - and each year butchered a cow and a hog for the freezer and canned for the winter. Oh, and when I was around 6 - we finally got indoor plumbing. lol

There is a Mennonite church about 10 miles from my house in North Carolina. I don't know where the members live as I never see anyone who dresses differently. They are probably a liberal branch. I have an ancestral line who were Swiss Brethren, heavily persecuted and immigrated to the USA for that reason.

The Mennonites here in GA are business owners, use the internet, and drive trucks and cars. They dress very plainly and conservatively and are very religious, but they interact with the local community quite closely. And you want to talk about fabulous cooks??? These ladies can cook!!!! We have a Mennonite bakery in town that serves the most delicous pastries you could ask, and their casseroles are jam up. They are lovely people and very kind and charitable.

The Amish and Mennonites are both from the Anabaptist strain of Christianity. Both Sects - the Amish and Mennonites and their communities are growing; there are no poor Amish or Mennonites; It is a simple way of life and they are self-sufficient almost all are business owners. And the Amish were taken to court by the government years ago for not sending their children to the public school until they are 18, and the Supreme court ruled in favor of the Amish their children speak English and a German Dialect, when they finish 8th grade are far better educated than 12th grade graduates from public schools - they test at 12 grade levels, and can all do bookkeeping and tax preparation; and they have all the skills you need to live a successful life. Some Mennonites do drive, there are a variety of them - and they don't buy hospital insurance - they have a program where they all donate into a fund to pay for one another's medical care. I grew up next to Mennonites - everyone thinks they and the Amish are backwards, but they are living way better lives than 90% of the population; honestly living amongst them - you will find they are far happier than most folks. Money can't buy what they build. Also, they work together as a community just like the Amish and the Hutterites, and as I say their communities are growing - not just through having large families but because a lot of Christians are draw to that life.

Actually the Amish wear a lot of "Amish blue" as well, but it's easy to spot the Mennonites - the ladies love pastel colors. And Amish women wear bonnets while Mennonites wear little white net caps. Both groups come into downtown Chicago frequently and enjoy themselves in the parks. They even ice skate in their long skirts!

I could be mistaken, I believe in the Amish community, due to a shortage of outsiders marrying into their faith, they are having difficulties with a dramatic rise in birth defects and such, basically being too closely related. I will say that these communities are very friendly while still upholding their faith and values, they don't pay taxes or SSI and they don't get benefits either. They have assimilated. Other religions.....well they could learn from them.

As a Christian, I kinda was always envious of their life. Being in a modern world with tech makes it REALLY hard to focus as a Christian. Granted I wouldn't want to live so old fashioned. But I could definitely be ok with no internet if it came to it. And who knows, if a solar flare is ever bad enough, it will fry out tech on earth and we will be forced to live like they do.

I don't like the term "stuck", but some are stuck. I've known many Amish and Mennonites over the years who wanted to leave the order, but to do so, you have to give up your family. You leave, you are shunned. No contact with family or friends who stay in the order forever. That's a big reason many stay.

I go out of my way to find Amish or Mennonite made products. I trust them more then I trust factory workers. They're just like anyone else - there's good and bad in the community - they just have a different belief structure. I've done volunteer work when I was a kid at a state park that was run as an 1830s village. They just haven't adopted as much to the modern life. If there's ever an EMP or solar flare that takes down the grid they're in the best position to thrive.

Kabir- lived in Central Pennsylvania for years and the Mennnonites are sort of Amish Light. Depends on each congregation, but most I encountered had electricity , land line phones and drove cars. Whenever the Amish needed a lift to the hospital or whatever, usually a Mennonite neighbor would drive them. The women wore sort of a netted caps and we had several working in the hospital as xray techs etc. Maybe these were more liberal than the group he is filming. Amish have a lot of birth defects and premature births. The Mennonites not so much, they have a more diverse gene pool. One day at the beach, I saw a Mennonite young woman in a two piece bathing suit with her little net cap!

We had a large Mennonite community in my hometown. They were always peaceful, caring, and hard working. A lot of times we would see them only in the grocery store or the library, and they only checked out books on farming, hunting, agricultural studies and religious books. It was a commune of about 20 families, making up about 500 people living, working, and praying all together. I never really got to know them, because they are very private and don't brag or boast, but they also don't push their faith on anyone but their own, and the kids can decide to stay in the faith or not, usually in their late teens. They don't baptize the babies, but instead when a Mennonite teen choses to be baptized, because they believe a person should come to God of their own free will. There is a lot I don't know about Mennonites, but I can honestly say they are people who are worthy of respect, even if I am not Christian.

I live in Wisconsin. We have plenty of Amish, Quakers, and Mennonites. All three are fantastic people and hard working. While theyre definitely falling into somewhat of being a cult, they have to choice to leave with the result being shunned. Some enclaves of the same group can have different rules even a few miles away. Mennonites are basically normal people who dress funny and ignore modern technology that isnt critical like vehicles or a phone. As others have pointed out, Amish take this firner, and nearly ude zero modern conveniences. Some will have and elder who owns a phone or thr whole community will have a vehicle. They avoid some taxes too, like social security or medicare. Ive seen Mennonites who work in fast food restaurants, so like I mentioned different rules for different groups.

The low level of education is concerning. Even more concerning would be if anyone even saw a picture of boobs they would be forever exiled from their family, friends, religion, job and life as they knew it, which is quite extreme. I would say they are stuck in it because with a low education level, thus nonexistent opportunities outside of the community and the cost of losing all family and friends, they don't have much choice but to stay.
