Hash browns are good, but bubble and squeak beats them, hands down

Hash browns are fairly new, here. They replaced Bubble and Squeak! Cafes and housewives would keep left over potato and cabbage, mash it up and fry it until it was crispy. It was served with next day's breakfast. Some people still make bubble and squeak, named after the noise it makes when being fried.

I can listen to you all day , honest , funny ,all the British things you talk about , to quote another British comment, you're the bees-knees!

A fab list. Come to Cornwall this early November. Aside from Makers Cornwall from the 4th to the 6th, there are castles, harbours, estuaries, pubs, restaurants, Gardens, Parks, AirBnB's etc!

Queues: I think this is closely related to the British sense of fair play and decency. If you wait in the queue, you eventually reach the front; everyone waits about the same length of time. But if someone tries to barge in front, it sets back everyone behind them.

For B - we once had a power cut on christmas day (about 20 years ago) and had to resort to the BBQ to cook on. Ever since it's been a family tradition that we have a BBQ, either on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve (usually BBQ bacon sandwiches!). So not even the slightest hint of sun is needed, just warm clothing!

Surrey Hills is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just south west of London. So nice. It's crazy that you can go from the hussle and bussle of London City, to rolling green hills, quaint villages and cossy pubs within a stones throw. It definitely worth a visit.

Im 17 year old brit and living in the UK with my parents and my family currently has a national trust membership. Sometimes we don’t have a membership but if we do we either get English heritage one year then national trust the next and try to visit as many places as possible whenever we go to a new area of the country. Meanwhile my grandparents are probably signed up to both and only go to like one property of each of them. Also some English heritage (and National Trust) sites are free because it’s right next to a public footpath or it just wouldn’t be appropriate to charge for them, for example ruins, statues, monuments and those carvings in the hills.

Alana, don't forget that if you're in a pub, the staff are nearly always happy to pour you a drop of draught to let you try it before you buy a pint. Try it.

The queue is the best and oldest example of equality that we have. Some people mock it, but then they are the ones that fail to understand the principles behind it. You take your turn regardless of your age, gender, ability etc. We may be a nation of tea drinkers now, but the first coffee house in Oxford dates back to the 1650's.

If you ever try Cornish Rattler cider on draft be careful, apparently it keeps fermenting in the barrel, it's labelled at approx 6% but ends up about 9% 🙂

I absolutely *love* me some Korma! It's gotta have properly seasoned yellow pilau rice with it though (not crappy bland and tasteless plain white rice). Bung a bit of Sag Aloo and Masoor Dahl on the side, and you've got yourself total heaven on a plate!

Northumberland is much ignored in terms of scenic landscapes. In fact, its the least populated county in England, and... it has the most castles. The coastine is also STUNNING. Bamburgh, Dunstonburgh, Walkworth, Holy Island, etc. I sorta loved that its kinda ignored though. It means that on Bank Holiday weekends, when the hordes travel south, we get to enjoy our landscapes sans too many tourists. I feel for the Cornish people, who must dread holiday season.

Traditionally the full English included sliced fried potatoes but hash browns are fine. Personally I would also list black pudding as essential too. I once had bubble and squeak with a breakfast and that was truly great but it can vary greatly depending on the chef.

What I like about English Heritage is as a member you can often receive a discount at Heritage sites in Wales as well...

What a fun premise for a video! As to "green"; one of my visits there during a particularly dry part of summer, I was surprised to see brown grass in parks and churchyards because I'm so used to seeing England as so green. Then I realized that unlike the US, there are far fewer sprinkler systems and in a few days, it would just rain and regreen everything! More of a mental note on the wasteful excess (and lack of California rain) in the US mindset IMO ☺️ Confession: in 7 years of annual visits, I've never been to a pub.

Talking of the Queue, a social Anthropologist, Kate Fox, wrote a book called "Watching The English" and devoted a completed chapter "The Queue of One" in which she observed that the habit is inbred to the extent that one person waiting at a bus stop will not hang around in the general vicinity of the bus stop but will queue right next to the sign. She also devoted a chapter to "The Weather as Family". If you can get hold of a copy it is very insightful but also amusing.

Hi Alana, I've only been to Canada once, crossed over from Niagra to Toronto and I agree the sense of humour is similar to us in the UK. Not only that they were proud of it! Which is awesome, the sense of humour changed immediately when you crossed the border, they tended to identify as more European than N American

I mention these, as the Welsh alphabet contains the letters ch, dd, ff, ng, ll, ph, and th too. (But has no j,k,q,v,x,or z). BTW, I agree that Canuks have a great, UK-style sense of humour. They need it, having the next-door neighbour they have. So: Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, Howie Mandel, Michael J Fox, etc, etc.

On the subject of barbecues, while visiting a Canadian friend in Edmonton, Alberta, he suggested having a barbecue on his rear deck. He started by clearing snow off the top of the barbecue.

Just spent the day working in the Welsh valleys, knocking on doors in pretty deprived areas, amazing people, within 2 minutes you get their life stories and invited in for tea. Interviewed a valleys lady last week - exactly the same attitude and friendliness and she was a self made multi millionaire.

The only thing better than Dairy Milk is another Cadbury product called Dark Milk. It's the perfect halfway house between Dairy Milk (which for some people becomes too sweet as they get older) and Bournville dark chocolate (which for some people...especially kids... tastes too bitter. I would thoroughly recommend that you try Dark Milk: (either the 150g bar or the "Buttons" version) perhaps in a taste test comparison video between these three Cadbury types of chocolate? Just an idea..... :)

Hi Alana, on the cider kick again heh? I think I’ve told you this before but in the 80s my post was Weston-Super-Mare just after 5he Bristol bridge on the M5 well about 20 miles further on I found the Thatchers Cider Farm. It used to be a real old style cider farm with mostly wooden barrels and an old barn style building on the side of the farm yard. You park and enter the barn, just inside there used to be a big ceramic sink to the side and in front of you there is long wooden table style bar. Behind the bar were three large Tuns (very large bullet shaped barrels) one with sweet tasting cider, the next with medium cider and the third with dry cider. On the sink we’re half pint glasses empty. You helped yourself to a glass walked to the bar and you could then aske for a mix of which of the three you wanted to mix. When you had the mix that you liked that week you then asked for that mix in a five litre plastic container. The colour of the cider is slightly green because what you are getting was raw alcoholic Scrumpy. It was great, I don’t know whether they still do this but it’s one of the memories I have of that time. I say Raw if you had more than a pint it made your pee smell! Honestly it was brilliant. Cheers Aah kid! And I’m saying nothing about the Zed!!!

Hi Alanna, I also live in Kent, down on the south east coast. I love your videos, I am gradually going through them all. You are spot on in all I have seen so far. Have you tried fried bread with your breakfast, though I like hash browns with mine. Have you found having a lovely big crispy Yorkshire after your dinner as well, with Tate and Lyle syrup, it is the green and gold tin.

Tattie scones are the best tattie (potato) fry up option.

I have lived in England for 80 years. After wartime shortages when essentials were short, we queued. But from 1950 to the present time. . I have never queued. We just do not. Nice vid as usual Alannna.
