Britain’s Best Disguised WW2 Pillbox: The Beaulieu Dairy House

The village of Beaulieu in the New Forest, Hampshire, has many hidden WW2 secrets. One of the most fascinating is the Dairy House which was converted into a pillbox during World War 2, probably in 1940.
I've been lucky enough to visit it recently, and in this video can show you around what I believe to be Britain's best disguised pillbox position.

Thank you, I was the same - used to drive past all the time. But as soon as I found out about it, I just wanted to see inside. Coincidentally, I've recently video'd the follow up video about Beaulieu Village that I promised in this video. I hope to publish that video next week so hopefully you can see some more of the hidden history in the village. It's got some fascinating history.

Great video,there are many more points of interest in beau lieu from the anti tank bunker by the fire station The holes in the wall opposite the dairy bunker made to point rifles out of and the alterations made to the house on the other side of the road Another place worth a look is at the end of badminton lane there’s an old sentry box leading to what used to be the fuel tanks for the Pluto pipeline and of course at calshot beach as you go round the one way system is the old generator building for raf calshot

Thanks for the kind comments. You're absolutely right about Beaulieu - I already have a script and plan ready to show the other aspects of the village. Just waiting for some decent weather to go shoot it. Due to the Dairy House being so unique I felt it deserved a video just to itself. Hopefully I can get the other Beaulieu video live in the next few weeks - fascinating place. Regards Badminston, I don't know of a sentry box, but I do know of 4 surface air raid shelters in that area inside a mile or so radius. My son and I went and documented the ones in that area over the summer and made a video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5yHfcp1zLTZdp8.html Is this what you are referring to? If not, would love to know about the sentry box as don't think I've seen it. I've approached the Cadland Estate in the past to ask permission to enter that structure and film, but they have refused me which is a shame. Haven’t been up the badminton road in years but the remains of the sentry box were on the left a few hundred yards up The bluebird cafe in calshot also used to be a guard watch station with a barrier pole as this used to be the only way into calshot before the one way system was introduced I also heard the other day from my company manager that they tried a few years back to purchase calshot activity centre and upon doing so looked at a house nearby I’m not sure if it’s up castle road or either the pilots or the house next door but he tells me there is a underground part which as purpose built by Churchill’s orders and has a glass viewpoint in it and apparently he visited here secretly and viewed the departure of day forces from here,when viewing the property they went in there and looked out through the viewpoint I will liaise with them further and try to get the exact location as I would love to know more about it as I’m sure you would too Also have you visited Fawley church which was bombed in the war it still has part of the world war 2 bomb in the church on display

I have been researching lots of bits and pieces in the area myself with the aid of my son and we also found out that opposite Fawley school to the left of church lane as you go into church lane there used to be an air raid shelter of quite a size to house the school children and staff,now bearing in mind the refinery is very close if you drive into church lane and look immediately left if I’m not mistaken in the grass there there is a structure of the same shape and size as a large air raid shelter buried in the ground or at least our imaginations lead us to believe it is this backed up by the local stories from people around during the war,if only we were allowed to check ?

@@Lucas_betts I didn't know that about the cafe at Calshot. I had read somewhere it was a searchlight position in WW2, but not the barrier pole. That's a new one for me. Thanks. I would love to know about that viewport - sounds fascinating! Yep, went to the church last year I think.

@@Lucas_betts a buried shelter would not surprise me at all. The Andersons tended to be half buried for protection. In fact, there are 2 completely buried Anderson shelters on the Totton Bypass... there's some talk of them being excavated at some point for historical purposes. Would be interesting to see if similar could be done here, if there's one there. I've not noticed what you mean though.

Amazing it was used, great idea though. I think the plan was the German 9th Army was to land on the Island and then leapfrog forth. Hence all the defences.
