Yeah, Lapland would be a fantastic summer place if it weren't for the swarms of bloodthirsty mosquitoes. They don't carry diseases up there in the north but they are so desperate for blood that they try to get even into your eyes, which is the way some of the bigger animals like elk & reindeer can end up dying after being blinded by the mosquito swarms.

I'm a bit allergic to flies, like for example one summer after my then girlfriends dad's mökki in Pori's island I was stung everywhere in my feet and they rose up to be like size of a cap of a corck. It was so bad since they started to bleed and all so they gave me antibiotics for it. Also I'm one of those people they seem to love, always when there is 2 on my friend it's 10 on me. In lapland the mosquitos are craazy, they truly are desperate and no amount of sny repellent will help. Only one is good smoky camp fire. Sometimes I feel there really isn't That much but in a minute they have noticed you and now you are under a swarm of them. It's so weard that in for Example in Laos at the rain-season there really wasn't a lot of mosquitos even tho you would think they have prey, super humid and hot, there is places to nest in terms of water bodies and discarded tires and all but nah, not really much of mosquitos. Then again the ones that there are might be carrying all kinds of diseases.

@@aleksisuuronen5969 Yea those small flies are annoying there are at least couple different types.. Sometimes they can swarm quite a bit and they fly in your nose, ears, eyes and bite everywhere they can. Fortunately I'm not allergic to them so I only get small red dots as bite marks. Mosquitoes are always worst after winter but late summer their bites don't seem to itch so much anymore. Some years ago I went to Kuusamo and there was swarms of mosquitoes and blackflies along with horseflies as big as tip of thumb. Needless to say there was not much business being outside without total cover in the middle of summer.

Holy fuck. Finally you come to the "real" Lapland. I live in Utsjoki specific to be in Karigasniemi and I'm so happy to see tourists in here after 2 years of Corona. I hope you bought somnthing or eat in a local restaurant and shops. Or used somnthing else local tourist guide or something 😍 and if you want to see cool places you should try geocaching. In Lapland I have noticed that here are less cach but they almost every time show you the most beautiful places which you never would not even consider to look or find.

To live in the north you need a mosquito magnet to be truly free!! Northern Finland consists of about 50/50 swampland and forest. A mosquito hatches in standing water and it takes 2-3 weeks to become an adult, it can fly about 2 km from its birthplace, lives for 2-3 weeks, only takes one bloodmeal during its life. The mosquito peak is around midsummer depending on year and location and falls after that, in Finland they come mostly from melting snow.

@@davecad Hello, Dave! Bottle the fresh air and export it! 😂 Well, I seem to recall that we have been exporting bottled spring water somewhere. And I definitely remember that we have been selling sand to the Sahara region or some of the desert states in that part of the world. As your nice wife is a Swedish-speaking Finlander as I am myself, I wonder whether she has told you of the people of Hölmölä, the Hölmöläborna? Hölmö means dumb or stupid in Finnish, and Hölmölä is a fictive place. One of the stories about the Hölmölä people tells about how they tried to bring light into their dark cabins or cottages by catching it in bags outside and releasing it indoors... Another one is about how they tried to lengthen their blankets by cutting them off at the lower end and sewing the cutoff piece onto the top end... By the way, you're the nicest, funniest and most positive Brit that I know. Keep up the good work! Och säg hej till din söta fru också! Och din gulliga son, Leo! (Isn't that his name?)
