Seeing as I have my dads old Royal Navy jack knife I thought I would treat myself to a modern reproduction of the army version, with the added tin opener. I managed to undo some pretty tight knots with the marlin spike too. A useful little tool.

The marlin spike is actually for use on steel ropes, like ammo slings etc & shackles, which is why the Pongo knife also has one. Hemp ropes are pried apart for splicing, or the knots, with a wooden spike called a "Fid"

Hi Rob. I have one of these knives an old and rusty one and always thought the spike bit was for getting stones out of horses hoofs. Well you learn something new everyday. Thanks for the video. Take care. Cheers, Ian

Cheers Ian. I know the navy one is for rope work but it can be used for anything really I guess.

I have a similar one that doesn't have the broad arrow mark on it. Mine is marked on the sheepsfoot blade "Joesph Rodgers, Made in Sheffield" Not a cheap knife by any imagination especially when you added the shipping and importation fees to the United States. which doubled the cost of the knife. What interested me in it was the unique style of tin opener on it. It makes a nice addition to the commercial British military modern pocket knives in my collection. I have all 4 that I have NSN numbers for them.

Thanks for watching the vid. You maybe interested in the video I made seven before this one about my late dads Royal Navy jack knife, which he got from working in Portsmouth dockyard between the 1950’s-1960’s.

Excellent review. I have been looking at these on line. I like the classic look of the knife.

Illegal to edc in the UK though, because of the spike.

Nice. I want one. Growing up in the 1970s … as a kid we made do with our father’s war time hand me downs and knives like this bring on real nostalgia. A While ago on a pang of old memories I bought a modern version of the stainless steel ‘The Genuine British Army Knife’ as made in Sheffield. *It is absolute Crap* .. the rivet heads are sharp, the land yard ring pinged off of the rivet holding it and the blade is impossible to sharpen to a nice edge. Everything about it indicates cheap and nasty. [it was a huge disappointment, and quite saddening because it is nothing like the one I had as a kid] Your one though looks excellent, thanks for showing it. [I think I can feel another purchase coming on 😂]

Cheers Rob. I bought it because i wanted an army version to go with my old dads navy knife. When I go to Overlord this year I’ll be looking to see if I can find a genuine old one. They used to sell them on the stalls there.

Great video again Rob. What a cracking bit of edc kit and the knot solver will save a lot of swear words haha..

Could be worth a carry in the pack somewhere for the marlin spike alone. Could probably be used for lots of things.

How are you getting those blades open without breaking your nails? I have to take my leatherman pliers to mine. And then closing the bugger again without severing a finger is a scary business to say the least.

My one is quite easy to open. The can opener is a little stiffer though.

Not sure what rope work is done in a modern navy, I suppose the traditional parts are there plus the hoisting of the colours etc and launch detail. Nice knife though.

I know what you mean. Ships for the last 100 years or so are mostly metal. HMS Warrior is moored about a mile from me. The first ironclad battleship with engines but still with masts and full rigging. An interesting crossover period in naval history. I sense a video coming on.

The marlinspike is still handy for opening D-ring shackles used with steel cables.
