British soldiers have been advancing through the forests of Latvia as they take on the role of enemy forces to test Nato's resilience during Exercise Titan Shield.
Following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Latvia has bolstered its defences on its eastern flank, and carries out regular drills to test its defensive capabilities.
British soldiers, who were involved in this type of exercise for the first time, deployed from their base in Poland to the Adazi training grounds, which are 11.2km long and 6.4km wide.
The British troops, who played the red force in Titan Shield, needed to prove they could fight when they were outnumbered, while the blue forces - representing Nato - had to defend their territory, Latvia having joined the alliance in 2004.

For those consoling the Brits for "losing" or crowing about the NATO win: the exercise was a great success as the object was to have the multinational NATO force work together and succeed in defending against a well trained and coherent single nation attack. If the outnumbered British had won then NATO would have a real problem to address. Most commenters have completely missed the point.

Jokes aside, how do they know who wins the firefight? Especially when heavier weapons like artillery is used. Is it essentially a big game of lazer tag?
@qhawker98
@qhawker98 8 ай бұрын
@@paulmcphillips7540basically yes. It's Lazer tag with blanks. Each weapon system has a Laser pointer that only emits when firing. Both vehicles and personnel a sensor type thing that that will detect when hit. For vehicles that are hit or taken out the battle the begin flashing ( basically that vehicle is destroyed and will no longer operate unless brought back into the battle to simulate reinforcements ). For personnel they will have sensors covering the helmet and torso over their gear. And if hit the system tell them where and how bad to simulate a casualty ( you could be a casualty but still fight or badly wounded and taken out of the fight until medic have sorted you or pulled you from the battle ) if you are hit really bad the system will just take you out the fight entirely saying your dead. I did 8 years with the British army and managed to use this kit. Believe it's called TES ( tactical engagement simulation) it's quite good to get a real feel for a semi real life battle but very complicated to set up and use. Plus quite heavy on top of everything else you wear. So if you got killed in the war games you just sat down and chilled while watching your mates getting hammered 🤣

The strength of the British military is their tactics and innovation. During WW2 the British invented the radar, which was invaluable in detecting German bombers locations. I hope even with all the idiotic cuts by the UK government, that they continue this tradition of fighting smarter, not necessarily harder.

I think many countries including my own seem to forget the UK is home to the best SF in the world, whom a large majority of countries base their SF training off. My dad is a seal and talks often about how the Brits don’t mess about, and how when the seals would be on operation, they would rarely, but sometimes see the SAS guys. They never dressed like superhero’s, weren’t all kitted out like the US. Just their basic gear and a gun, in trousers and T-shirt with a scarf on their face. They were scary for all the wrong reasons. You’d only have to look at them to know you were in good hands.

This couldn't be further from the truth as this video shows. Always training, trying out new tactics, getting stuck into exercises like this to gain the edge. As much as I wanted the British to win this exercise, its not really the point. It just shows Nato is capable of taking down a strong adversary. So quite reassuring actually.

Our small number is actually part of our great success. Essentially the British army selection process can be extremely picky. They basically can only pick the cream of the crop. So you have pretty competent officers, highly motivated professional well trained soldiers with usually fairly decent kit and innovative technology.

@@aaronking2369 that’s true but in population we have about 65 million people, quite big for its geographic size. The UK is an island so Naval power is more the focus for defence, we don’t have to worry about tanks rolling over our borders in an invasion of the homeland. The UK is probably one the hardest places in the world to have an amphibious assault, the Germans tried it even after after they captured basically all of the European continent however there fall was therefore inevitable. It’s impossible for any adversary of the UK to capture or invade today nevertheless the MOD wants the UK army to increase from roughly 78k troops to 120k plus reserves.

@@lachlanchester8142 I would argue the threat of the drop still provides some use. If an enemy knows that allowing any amount of overflight of their positions risks paratroopers shooting their men in the backs then they face a tough decision: bring their air defence assets closer to the front, or accept the paras will drop and have rear guard units to hopefully deal with it. The first option puts their valuable air defence assets closer to the front, which of course increases their likelihood of being attacked. The second will require troops which could otherwise be helping somewhere else, there is also no gurantee that they will stop all the paras. So either way just having the ability to do a paratrooper drop hinders your enemy.

Democracy is a matter of negotiation and the government isn't the scapegoat for everything. To be clear, I really dislike your government. But that doesn't change the fact that any government is a reflection of its people, or rather of the current state of society. Sometimes more, mostly less, but fundamentally, it still is. If there was broad support for the armed forces across all social classes then it would be reflected in the government. Then again, if you live in a society with very little support in the armed forces, you cannot just say about dozens of millions of people, "They're all wrong." There's a reason for everything and I know this applies to my country's military, but probably to a lot of others as well, there tends to be a lack of self-reflection and self-criticism in the military. They often have a hard time keeping up with societal progress. An army in a democracy must represent the people, though. Aside from the fact that you otherwise quickly run out of young talent, it also instills trust issues between the general population and the armed forces. And that's a huge problem for an army that exists to defend the constitution and liberal democracy - or, in your case, constitutional monarchy, I guess. Lol. You can't change society, and as a democrat you shouldn't want to in the first place. But you can change how the military is perceived and accepted by the people, even if it means breaking with traditions or similar. What you absolutely must not do, though, is deflect any blame onto "the government" or, even worse, onto your own population - instead of reflecting on it and taking responsibility like every role model should. Edit: "As a democrat, you shouldn't want to change society", in this case means that you shouldn't try to retroactively, forcefully change a consensus resulting from a societal process of opinion formation. You are of course free to participate in said process and try to convince people, but if the results don't match what you believe yourself, you can't say, "I'm right and everyone else is wrong." Instead, you would need to accept that the problem lies somewhere else.

So with light arms fire they used blanks, and you'd know you're being shot at at that range..., how do they simulate incoming artillery fire?

The Russian Aerospace Forces launched a strike with a hypersonic Kinzhal missile at the Yavorovsky training ground in western Ukraine. At least 300 people were killed, including personnel from NATO countries. It is noted that the evacuation of the wounded is actively underway in Poland. Since the start of the war, this training ground has been a hub for large troop movements for extensive deployment and training several times since it is so close to the Polish border, and each time the Russian army launched surprise attacks on it.
