If you want to experience something amazing... be about 5 - 10 blocks away (maybe more) from one of these open air stadiums when everyone is singing and you can clearly hear the "choir" of voices. It is absolutely nuts how those voices will carry and it's like experiencing something you would read about in the Bible. All of those voices singing together in unison and the sound just fills the skies. It really is something.

Hi guys. Ohio State university's team name is the Buckeyes. There is a very delicious sweet treat (made popular I think in Ohio) called buckeyes. They are a peanut butter mixture covered in chocolate. They look like the nut or fruit of the buckeye tree (or maybe plant)??There are a lot of cool traditions in college football. Several years ago a childrens hospital was built just outside of the stadium where The Iowa Hawkeyes play. At their home games the entire crowd faces the hospital at the end of the 1st quarter and waves to the kids in the hospital. College games are just electrifying.

College games like this are pretty much every weekend during football season, especially at big named schools. There will be “tailgate parties” in the parking lots before the games. The crowd will be mostly the college kids and alumni from the 2 schools playing, though anyone can go and plenty of people do. The atmosphere is electric! The team spirit is huge and gets amped-up on just the energy level of the crowd. College/University are basically the same thing. If you go, go early and tailgate. The band, the cheerleaders, the mascots… there is just so much to take in!

Tailgating before the game is the real party atmosphere, and it starts early on Saturday mornings before the games which kickoff anywhere between noon and 8 PM. When you go to a game, you basically make a day or even a weekend out of it depending on how far away you've had to travel for the game. For the typical college kid it's wake up on Saturday morning at whatever time your hangover allows, trudge out to the stadium to tailgate, watch the game, have dinner, and then typical Saturday night college parties. The universities with the large stadiums are cities unto themselves with campuses miles across, hundreds of buildings, and 40,000+ kids living there. Needless to say 4 years at one of these universities is a hell of a good time.

Just a quick note, regarding your confusion around college names, most of the BIG college teams are from state schools. So the college will be "University of [state]". So "University of Nebraska" would be the college name and the team would be Nebraska Cornhuskers (team would be state/college + mascot) . Same with most other big college teams like Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns, Michigan Wolverines, etc.

If you want seats to a big college game like this, tickets with a good view range from difficult to impossible to get, although the “nosebleed” upper section tickets should still be accessible. Personally I think college sports crowd trumps the proteam crowd, but I do live in UK Wildcats land. UK here is “University of Kentucky” not United Kingdom. I think you’d have a better chance getting good tickets in a city that has proteams as well as college teams, because more of them probably go to progames than college games. when a state only has a college team (like Kentucky or Virginia) about every single person in that state is looking for NCAA college sports tickets

When I was in high school back in the '60s, most of the students attended, even starting in Jr. Hi/Middle School. Actually, kids can get their first exposure to team sports either in pre-school soccer, or in T-ball. Also, almost, if not all, of the sports at the High School level across the country have statewide playoffs for football/soccer, basketball, and regionally maybe hockey up north, and wrestling in some states. In most to all states, these games are broadcast statewide. Many parents of the kids playing would attend nearly all to 100% of the games as well. Yeah, we're sports nuts here, to the point that it's become a big part of the American culture. I remember recently seeing someone else review this, and in the comments, someone pointed out that the little boy with the Nebraska players was representing his brother who was on the team, but had recently died. Actually, it was Ohio State at around the 9 min. mark, not that I'm such a rabid fan, but I noticed that at the far end of the field it said Ohio State, and partly obscured by the crowd at the near end was Buckeyes--the team's name/mascot. Millie's friend no doubt went to a high school by that name in Columbus--the home city for Ohio State.

The way the US reacts to amateur sports is one thing. We may be outliers reacting to high school & college sports. The way you talk, we are outliers in primary school sports. But I'm more curious why there is such a lack of it in the UK. Not crazy like in the the US, but such a total lack of it. Wouldn't the teams feel better if family showed up at least? Isn't there some sort of comradery? Some esprit de corps that would make the student body want to show up?

@Jason Mistretti, Of course no one is going to want to stand in one place for 3 or four hours at a time if they have no seats to sit in, But in all honesty doesn't the maintenance and upkeep of The Bleachers and field to which games are played fall into the realm of the whole pride angle? I personally have only seen 3 foreign countries in my lifetime( wish I could afford to see more), but American schools and Colleges do raise money for the upkeep of playing venues, and equipment, sales of food, Tickets some federal funding so on and so forth, I wish to thank you for sharing what you know and have experienced with us 🤗

@@SolTerran5050 Interested parties (family & friends) do stand for hours in the US. Most times I would bring a folding chair. And in miserable conditions sometimes. I know a stadium is a money making machine in the US. I have been to many foreign countries but I wasn't there to see the sports. But I do know they go crazy over their football. The chants they have are frankly better than the US version & some are very funny. So I know some in the UK are sports crazy. But the fall-off in interest beyond professional sports just surprises me I guess.

I would so love to take you guys to a big time college football game. I am from Alabama and the kind of atmosphere at a huge rivalry game like Auburn vs Alabama has to be seen to be believed. People start showing up for tailgating the day before the game. Thousands of people in RV's, campers, under tarpaulins or just sitting on blankets on the grass. All of them grilling every type of meat imaginable with all the necessary side dishes as well. And of course enjoying their favorite shall we say "beverages". LOL! We are talking anywhere from 87 to 100 thousand people sprawled across the campus. The mood is just electric. If you could make it known that you were from England and this was your first college football game the two of you would be waved over to so many tailgate parties and given so much food and shall we say "beverages" that you might not be able to waddle up to your seats at game time. And once inside the stadium you are just overwhelmed with a wall of sound and colors. Marching bands playing, fly overs by military jets, videos and music being played on the jumbotron. And then of course there's the game itself. Video clips do not do it justice. It really is a spectacle that has be seen in person.

College football here is HUGE and we ALL take it VERY seriously. The stadiums are not filled with "parents and friends" - they are filled with fans from all over the states that are playing. We (fans) travel to other states to see our teams play, and WIN! I'm what's known as a Hokie, meaning I am a die-hard Virginia Tech fan. I could care less about pro ball (NFL) anymore... they have no heart and they are all driven by money and celebrity. If you want to see some REAL football-spirit when you come here, go to a game and FEEL the excitement! At the 5:40 mark of this video you can see VT Hokies. Our home field (Lane Stadium) holds over 65,000 fans, and many are sold out if another great team is playing against us. Many tailgaters watch in live on TV & iPads (etc) from the parking lot if they didn't get tickets... but they are out there eating GOOD from their barbeque grills and drinking and cheering and having a great time.

Collage games actually probably have a bigger fan turnout rate than national league teams. Mostly due to the fact that its close to where you are, and you feel ownership over it as being A) Student of the collage B) Alumni of the collage C) student of the opposing team going for a trip. Where as in national league not even every state gets a team and its usually located in The Big City of the state and can be prohibitively expensive to go to.

It is THE Ohio State University (OSU but don’t forget the ‘the’ with a long E.). Do not confuse it with Ohio University (OU)- this will trigger the VERY faithful fans lol. Here in Columbus most bleed scarlet and grey (the school colors). During home games tailgating outside of the stadium practically shuts down a large chunk of downtown. If we are playing ❌ichigan that increases tenfold as students and fans swarm the area and fill the bars. Brutus the Buckeye is our mascot named after our state tree. We are pretty much just as proud of the marching band as we are of the team.

And also Wembley Stadium is 90k. What your talking about is more like high school(sports not football, high school baseball, or basketball) or even 'travel' teams(more so baseball) where only family and friends on a occasion would come. Many schools use the same 'mascot' name like Eagles, Buckeyes, Tigers etc. through the different collegiate levels and all the way to high school and middle school but they aren't affiliated with any collegiate team or school. Also has someone else said, definitely check out some video of Indy 500 crowds or even NASCAR crowds at Talladega, Daytona 500, or Bristol night race in the early 2000s.

I went to Penn State in the 80's - the first stadium where everyone was wearing white is ours. The "whiteout" didn't exist when I went to school there, but it is incredible. What is even more impressive is the tailgating that happens before the games. For a mile plus in every direction thousands of cars all hosting parties. On Football Saturdays in the Fall, the local population went from a sleepy town (it's a lot bigger now) to the third most populous city in Pennsylvania, trailing only Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

At any college sporting event (football, basketball, whatever) the current students of the home Uni will be segregated from the rest of the crowd with their own official Student Section, since they get to attend for free. And the band will occupy a subsection of the Student Section (since they are students too, of course!) Regarding the players, they are not merely normal students when it comes to major sports (football and basketball). They are high-level athletes who are often actively recruited by the coaching staffs. Recruiting budgets can run into the millions of dollars at elite universities, used to fly all over the country to meet players and to fly players in for lavish visits. The top recruits often hold media events where they reveal their final decision about what college they will pick. They get free tuition and access to all sorts of facilities and perks that other students don't. They spend much time in training and practice, but must also attend classes and maintain a certain level of academic achievement. It's a pretty fascinating thing
