Born in 81 and a funny thing about MJ's music, in the 80s I became familiar with the songs, but never matched up artists with songs at first (that came in the late 80s). Well, I don't know if you remember this but Disney Channel used to have something called DTV where they play any Disney cartoon footage with popular music. The did a Valentine's Day special once and did Weird Al's Eat It with Disney footage. I didn't know as a kid that was a parody of MJ's Beat It until my mom had to tell me that lol.

The 80's are my wheelhouse! I can tell you almost on everyone one where I was when I first heard each song. There were 3 that I NEVER heard before in my life. 1980-1982 middle school, 1982-1986 high school, 1986-1990 military (USAF). Some of the ones in 88-89 came to me late because I was stationed in S. Well, having lived through the second half of the 60's, all of the following decades - I've heard so much different music and I'm realizing that it's so easy to miss what someone else might have heard over-and-over. Back into the 1940's, there weren't many genres of music. Starting in the 1950's, music seemed to fork into various new categories. This has continued in each new decade that it's astonishing.

From an 80’s kid, I’ll have to say I’m pretty sure it’s the reason so much of the music that we were listening to during those times was because the generation writing it listened to a lot of the music that had come from the first part of the 20th century. Mainly the 1920’s going forward. I heard all of that music either from movies or from my grandmother. Mainly from movies though, and that’s because my grandmother watched all of those older pictures. My sister and I learned so much about the 20’s and 30’s because it was just before and during the depression, which is when many of our parents or grandparents lived through. Jazz and Blues and everything in between. 😎

So grateful I grew up hearing cutting-edge, AM radio, s.e. Michigan, 1967-1974 - 🔥 playlist. For me, as I aged, I love 1950s music more & more bc all great curr. artists were more influenced by 1950s blues- or doo-wop singers the most. Rap & hip hop descended from funk music which was inspired by both R & B-, doo-wop- & church (gospel) music.

It’s what I always say to people who don’t know or understand the 80’s, basically, the late 70’s and early 80’s were pure awesomeness. The culture, the movies and the music, especially the music. I’m sure that there are tons of us that look back on that time and would pay just about anything to go back and re-live our youth. I could go on and on, but I’ll leave it at this, 1977 to 84 was absolutely killer! This was a lot of fun you two. Millie putting the phone up to her ear to Stevie Wonder totally cracked me up. Have a great weekend and congrats on your little one coming soon.

The song for April 1984 (We are the World) has an amazing story behind it that you should really look up sometime. It had a lot of big name singers at the time in it. Some songs like “Smooth Criminal” by Michael Jackson was remade other artists. (In this case Alien Ant Farm redid “Smooth Criminal”.) Some of the songs that you were unsure on were ones like “Take my Breath Away” were used in Movies like the original Top Gun. Videos became more common in the ‘80’s thanks to MTV actually playing music videos at that time. (Part of why some of the videos were more silly and zany back then.)

My favorite 80's year is definitely 1984. And I have a lot of reasons for that. If I think about it, the absolute best that the decade had in music, was right in the middle of the decade, 1984, 1985, 1986. I'm just obsessed with 80's music and movies. Being born in the middle of that decade and growing up with all the music and movies from it, kind of defined my life.

You’re missing out if you don’t watch the video. They show you how to dance to it and the story they are trying to tell in picture form so that you can understand the message in their music, in case you’re unsure what they meant by the lyrics. The video brings the song to life, so that there is another texture or artistic layer to it. The videos turned them into good actors that you want to watch while listening to the song. That’s why so many musicians end up being actors. They started off acting in their music videos, continued the character into their live performances and then got called to read for a script in a movie or tv show. It was up to them which side of the acting scale they went to. For example, I don’t think MJ or Prince ever acted or produced anything other than their music, music videos and their live performances (I consider Purple Rain, Princes way to bring his whole album to life with a live performance) but Madonna does both as well as acting in movies so did Whitney. Apologies for rambling on but breathing in all of this nostalgia is to blame. 😉

Keep in mind that this list was subjective. There were no rock or metal or jazz or blues songs on the list. What you really got was a glimpse of what we saw on MTV and VH1 daily, after school until bedtime through that decade. They put out full albums and about ten of the songs on it would become top ten hits, one month at a time. The next year they;d put out another album and music video then the process would start again. We were like kids in a candy store, gobbling it all up as the sugar high set in. 😂

The last song, "We Didn't Start the Fire" is an INCREDIBLE history lesson. Billy Joel said that he wrote the verses in an afternoon after reading a book about the history of the 20th century. Google the song to read the verses. It is fascinating stuff and highly educational.

Jan '88 - "Always On My Mind" was written in '71 and first popularized by Elvis Presley, though it was Willie Nelson's 1982 version I first heard and enjoyed. I kept a tally, and there were only ten songs in this video I didn't know well enough to sing along to. Mind you, I graduated high school in '85, so these songs ARE my teen and young adult years.

Honestly, though, the first couple years of the 80's (80 and 81) were more or less an extension of the 70's. My father said the 70's didn't really end until 1982...I'm guessing because of the popularity of Olivia Newton John's "Physical" song and music video, I'm sure that ushered in the fashion of headbands and leg-warmers lol.

Awww, you guys are too cute enjoying the music I grew up with❤️ You actually knew way more than I would expect from a young couple. I wish there were more New Wave/post punk bands/songs like The Cure, The Smiths, New Order, Psychedelic Furs, OMD, Siouxsie , The Banshees and more.

Also just remembered that Dionne (Warwick) & Friends’ “That’s What Friends Are For” is a remake of a 1982 song recorded and released by Rod Stewart, and Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All” is a remake of 1976 song recorded and released by George Benson.

If you guys ever come to Minneapolis, Minnesota, we have a weekly dance night (called Transmission) where 80s and 90s are most of what gets played. I just went to their 22nd anniversary event on Saturday (the weekly thing is Wednesday though).

Honestly, to me, the Pet Shop Boys are mostly the band who gave an actor originally named David McDonald his stage name, because there was already a David McDonald acting in the guild, so he picked the last name of their lead singer, Neil Tennant. And then became the TENth Doctor.

Always On My Mind was originally done by Brenda Lee but was also done by Elvis…both in the 1970s….but maybe the most famous version is by Willie Nelson in the EARLY 80s….and was a very different, slower song than the version listed here.

Before this time I was mainly listening to classical music through school then got into listening to other music after graduation in 80. Know most until late 80’s as I spent most of end of decade time at sea in Navy and didn’t hear many of those songs.
