When I was a kid in Chicago we always celebrated shrove Tuesday with a pancake supper at church. Of course I grew up in an Episcopal / Anglican Church. The whole point of Fat Tuesday traditionally has been to use up all the fat in the house. Traditionally one does not use fat for cooking during Lent.

I just got home from our Pancake dinner at our church to celebrate Fat Tuesday and lent, which starts tomorrow. I made pancakes for around 35 people. It's a tradition, we just don't have a "pancake day" I guess. But pancake dinners on Fat Tuesday are common, among Protestants and Catholics anyway.

Yes, pretty much every American kitchen has a set of canisters. Plastic canisters are usually made to fit inside one another when empty, but some people use canisters made of other materials (e.g., ceramic), in which case they may not be stackable. Either way, the largest canister is always the flour canister, and the next largest is almost always sugar. The others vary but can include things like brown sugar, cornmeal, powdered sugar, etc. We keep cornstarch in our smallest one. A typical canister set has four canisters, but I've seen sets of three, five, or six.

Pancakes w/sides are our (American) equivalent of your full English Breakfast. A fairly common thing available at restaurants and easy to make & customize at home. Common enough on weekdays, even, and definitely on weekends. You can even get (or make) the dry mix in bulk and just add water/egg/whatever when you're ready to cook & eat. A full meal in half the time if you have a bin of pre-mixed dry ingredients on hand, and easy to customize with any nut/fruit or topping you might like ... or nothing at all! Add fruit, butter/peanut butter, syrup, jam, applesauce on the top or the side and juice and bacon/egg/tofu/sausage on the side and you have a solid meal with not too much work. We tend to make them much heartier than crepe-style though, they are more like an actual cake in texture, just made in a skillet rather than baked in the oven.

Our flour comes in 5-pound or 10-pound paper packages (as seen in video). Once it is opened, we dump it into a container with a lid. [Sugar is packaged the same way, so it also goes into a container.] Most people in U.S. don’t weigh their ingredients, we use measuring cups or spoons. Never heard of lemon on pancakes-we mostly use butter, maple syrup, fruit flavored syrup, powdered confectioner's sugar, or jelly/jams. Being America, anything goes & people add whatever they like.

There is a small town in Iowa, where I grew up named Centerville, Iowa celebrates Pancake Day every year. Since 1949, the city has conducted an annual Pancake Day festival. For the first five years, the celebration was held the first Thursday in October until 1954 when it was moved to the last Thursday in September. In 1965 the celebration was moved to the last Saturday in September. Pancake Day is a time for local businesses and organizations to cook up pancakes which they provide for free to their customers to show thanks for their continued patronage. The event that is held in the Courthouse Square Historic District features a morning kiddie parade, a larger afternoon parade with a unique double-loop parade route, a beauty queen contest and free entertainment. On Pancake Day 2021, the Guinness World Record was set when 14,000 pancakes served in four hours

James most Americans have sweet pancakes, gravy is for biscuits or if you're Canadian or Northern US french fries or at least if you top that gravy with cheese curds aka poutine... I do make and enjoy Yorkshire pudding with gravy... That said I would probably find your gravy topped pancakes enjoyable ss back when I was a teenager ( I'm now 53 ) I invented turkey pancakes with Thanksgiving leftovers which you might find enjoyable although it requires a little bit more effort and requires a thicker pancake batter rather than crepe batter... Basically you chop up leftover turkey, leftover vegetables ( think cooked carrots, green beans etc.)and raw onions or green onions and once you flip the pancake while the batter is still a bit runny you sprinkle chopped turkey, vegetables, cheese if you want and small dots of stuffing/dressing then let it cook until almost solid and flip again cooking briefly to get it nice and brown before flipping once more onto a plate at which point you pour on the gravy and possibly a dot of cranberry sauce... Like bubble and squeak you can add to liking... While I haven't done it you could likely do the same with roast beef, roast pork etc.

I guess I probably had to throw away at least $250 of food 🤢
