It's little more complicated than that. It wasn't what the Soviets said. It's what they didn't say. It was in fact the fastest interceptor ever built. We assumed it weighed half what it did and was designed as an air superiority fighter all without the Soviets saying a word. We have a history of overestimating their capabilities, all they have to do is keep their mouth shut.

As a Hazelwood high school senior in 72, kids would drag race on Banshee Rd next to F-15 builder McDonnell Douglas plant. At the far end of Mac property, a section of airport tarmac was designated as a power up site. The F-15 was tethered to the ground and a full power with afterburner test was performed. We could stand along Banshee Rd no more than 100 yards away and feel the incredible power. Also, Mercury and Gemini mission capsules were developed at McDonnell Douglas in St Louis, Missouri.

10:15 I’ve spent the last 10 years working in flight test. It’s not as scary as you might think. For one, we use a build up approach, slowly using more of the flight envelope to keep things safe. If something does go wrong, there’s a control room filled with “subjects matter experts” (SMEs) who are receiving real time telemetry to see if everything is working and are trained to help get the pilot on the ground safely. I spent 15 months as an engine SME in the control room on a single engine military test program. I spent several hours in a simulator testing my ability to handle emergencies before I was able togo to the control room. A good friend from college was one of the test pilots in our squadron so I had personal motivation there to keep the plane safe. Yes there are risks but we take all sorts of steps to manage them. One thing I wish the commentator had spent more time on was pilot situational awareness. The USAF has done an extensive study of aerial combat and found the number one differentiator is SA: even to the point that something like 80% of air combat defeats came from an airplane the losing pilot was not even aware was IN the airspace. The F-15 certainly gives its pilot the SA he needs but if you look at more modern American aircraft, the F-15 pilot looks woefully uninformed in comparison. One of our test pilots was an F-15 combat pilot and he l raved about the SA he had in the new plane.

Good video, thanks. First, hats-off to Brits. In the 80s-90s during the fall of the USSR, I flew F-15C's while stationed in Germany, but also flew many missions out of RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath in England while on TDY (temporary duty) there. The local people there were exceptionally kind to me and my fellow Eagle Drivers (F-15 Eagle..) as were the RAF pilots we flew with. Anyway, the Eagle is as much fun as you'd think and a whole lot more. Unlike most fighters that came before it, the limiting factor was by and large, the pilot. Most prior fighters would reach performance limits before the pilot - what that meant was the pilot had to worry about keeping the aircraft in its ''safespace' if you will. While the Eagle had to worry about not exceeding the pilots limitations. Also, regarding the Soviet MIGs, they were heavy, unreliable but their pilots were skilled and more than a little crazy. A key metric of an air force is their ready-rate, that what percent of their aircraft were mission-ready over time. So as the Soviet aircraft were very maintenance intensive, they were down and unavailable a high percentage of the time. So bottom line to match the F-15''s ready-rate (say 97%) the USSR had to have about 10x+ more aircraft to have an equal number of mission-ready MIGs. Also check out this video of an F-15 flying and landing safely with one entire wing torn off. Hell of an airframe... kzfaq.infoemTXzrqBnXo

It's worth noting that the F-4 Phantom overlapped with the F-8 Crusader in Vietnam. The Crusader was nicknamed "The Last Of The Gunfighters", because it was designed to dogfight. So it's not that the US couldn't dogfight, it's just that its latest and greatest fighter couldn't.

I guarded our nuke loaded F-111's at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk late 70's. The F-15 replaced them in the early eighties and we removed our nukes. Now there are two squadrons (48) of F-15E Strike Eagles and two (48) of F-35A Lightning (which are now capable of dropping our B61 nukes). Aircraft from Lakenheath are currently participating in the air attack against the Houthis in Yemen. Anytime you see LN on the tail of a 15 or 35 it's from the 48th Fighter Wing at Lakenheath. Just a few factoids since it's a military review. Love the channel guys!!!

The US military started releasing some of the most famous aircraft in our history starting with the F-14 Tomcats in 1974 and ending with the F/A-18 Hornets in 1983. Then they upgraded the Hornets calling them the Super Hornets in 1999. These aircraft set the standard for dogfighting across the US military and are recognized by most of the US population over the age of 20. Some of the best military aircraft movies from Hollywood featured these aircraft including the Top Gun movies and the Independence Day movies.

i would say it seems to have been more of a stalemate than "getting smoked" "Through careful planning and coordination, two MiG-25 jets successfully caught two USAF F-15 fighters, of the 53rd Tactical Fighter Squadron out of Al Kharj Air Base, off guard and engaged them in a dogfight. After several minutes of aerial maneuvering and several fired missiles, the Iraqi jets returned to Tammuz Air Base undamaged, and the F-15s returned to Saudi Arabia, albeit with one damaged. This would possibly be the closest an F-15 has ever come to being shot down in air-to-air combat."

The MIG25 was built by the soviets as a counter to the US development of the mach 3 Valkyrie bomber. They freaked when they saw the Valkyrie and had nothing which could even touch it, but the US only built two of them then cancelled the program due to it's high cost and the advent of ICBMs which were being developed and showed more promise for being able to penetrate Soviet airspace and deliver nuclear bombs on target. The Soviets were forced to spend more than they could really afford to develop and put the MIG25 into service and it was largely wasted money since the MIG25 was a real dog. So the USA developed a mach 3 high altitude bomber compelling the Soviets to develop the MIG25 which compelled the USA to develop the F15. Both of the USA planes were good even though the bomber was cancelled. The F15 is still a winner and the MIG25 is all but forgotten being largely a very expensive, extremely high maintenance and mostly useless aircraft.

This is a perfect example of how boasting & propaganda can backfire. In this case, Russia hyping up their new fighter put the US on alert to defeat its less-than-true capabilities and end up with a fighter that can not only hold up against the hype, but far exceed the real capabilities. I grew up in a neighborhood right next to an airport. Occasionally, they'd put on air shows there. One year, they advertised their first show to have an F-15 Strike Eagle as its main attraction. I got to watch it go through practice maneuvers the day before. It was like having access to a private showing. It was awesome to watch. Had a pair of binoculars with me as well.

Another reason why you don't try to bluff with Americans. They will take you at face value and innovate something superior. For all of it's faults ... the United States is still leading the world in innovation and technology. Dragging the rest into an ever increasingly technologically advanced era.

I mean, the operational reason why the F-15 terrified the USSR was that they faced it in 1982 and got absolutely curb-stomped. Israel was fighting against Syria, and the USSR had 30 SAM sites supporting the Syrian military. The IAF (90 jets) did a massive air battle against the SAF (100 jets + 30 SAM sites) and the outcome was 86 destroyed SAF jets and 29 destroyed USSR SAM sites, at the cost of 2 damaged IAF F-15s, that got back to base and were repaired--the IAF lost nothing (some of this was due to the fact that they invented weaponized drones and dedicated electronic warfare aircraft, and this engagement was the first use of those in history). This was the first large-scale deployment of the F-15, and it drove home that the vast majority of the USSR's anti-air systems had just been invalidated. If Israel could do this to them in Syria, the US could certainly do this to them at home and so their home defense was shaken to its core. If USSR air denial no longer worked, then their entire Cold War defense strategy lost a massive thing that they were relying on (the USSR prided itself on its air defense systems). Check out the Dark Docs video titled "90 Israeli F-15s and F-16s Annihilate 100 Syrian MiGs" if you want more info on that large engagement. They are pretty neutral and give a very good factual overview of the situation.

There is much more to this story. The MiG-25 was rushed into production to intercept the American XB-70 Valkyrie SUPER BOMBER. Western analysts mistook the rushed interceptor design to be a super fighter. Note, interceptors may look like fighters, but are designed to fly and climb fast to shoot down incoming bombers. The USSR realized that panic the Foxbat caused and engaged in massive counter espionage and propaganda campaigns to feed Western paranoia. The MiG-25s that broke the records had been HEAVILY modified and were incapable of any combat. These planes, plus leaked misinformation, confirmed everyone's fears. The US then designed and built a fighter to take out the NONEXISTANT Soviet super fighter. Unfortunately for the commies, the F-15 was real and could have defeated the imaginary MiG. Note: The Clint Eastwood movie "Firefox" was loosely based on the events surrounding the Foxbat.

The reality was, the Mig's were pieces of shit....all of them. Russia has never made a "GOOD" product! They were capable of 2 out of the 10 things they claimed and horribly made. No Western pilot would ever fly one in combat. And they were always so crude and even when new, 15-20 years behind America 8n avionics!

@@Mike_Romeo you mean the ones with German avionics and German engines? Because a Russian engine has a service life of 2k -4k hours and an American engine is 12k-15k hours....and the one plne the GERMANS were fighting was the original underpowered F-18.....Russian everything sucks balls!

@@Cody38Super 1. They still had soviet instruments 2. They didnt made the engines themself but used the Soviet ones they had.

3. they fought everything the US had at that time in their inventory. They even where stationed in the US to test them. Even US pilots where trained on the them and they had many good things to say about it.

@@Mike_Romeo p.s.- Mike, you ever notice that the F-16 came out over a decade before and looks a LOT like a single engine Su-27, Mike? 5 years before the F-16 program started, General Dynamics submitted an entry for the F-15 program with twin engines....in 1970 or 72....looks an awful lot like an Su-27/Mig-29, Mike.....look it up sometime. Coincidence? How's that Su-57, Mig 37/41/Checkmate/fake Russian B-2 programs coming along Mike? Maybe in 50 years they'll have a rival for the F-35. It's a big accomplishment to make a plane just as good as something made 20 years earlier..and they've never been able to do it. The only thing that made those Mig-29's competitive, was the German Pilots....not the planes. In real life, they all die, Mike.
