Call this the piggy in the middle of our 2 part episode on lambing. It's a little look into the lives of the pigs on our farm - they're the only animal that isn't bred on the farm, so let's take a look at what it's like to care for them.
Of course, if you have any questions or comments then leave a comment - we'd love to hear from you. Equally, this year we're looking to episodes and topics that you're interested in. So let us know what you'd like to learn next.

Something she said made real sense- maybe "every street should have their own pig to look after", or chickens, or a vegetable plot? Maybe this would be a sustainable and ethical alternative to mass production farming, and a learning opportunity for all.

I remember Alex Langlands, Peter Ginn, and Ruth Goodman on Wartime Farm saying that unlike during WWII, nowadays pigs meant for the sale of their meat can't be fed table scraps. "Health and Safety" issue. Too bad; it would provide a neighbourhood learning opportunity and an efficient way of reducing food waste.

4:53 I got distracted by the cat. It must have thought that was a good place to sit and would also be a good place to lay, but realised it wasn't, too late, then just committed to it anyway. (across 2 clips).

Great video. Just wanted to point out though that pigs generally don't smell when kept outside in a pen, it's more if they are kept indoors (because they do produce a fair amount of muck) that they start to smell. I'm not sure that I've heard a pigs eyesight is bad, as far as I understand their hearing is their weakest sense however they more than make up for it with the excellent sense of smell they have. Digging is something they do have a tendency to do when the ground is moist on the surface. Ringing them is the best way to stop this although I'd understand if it didn't seem worth the effort for only 6 pigs like in the video. IMO you need to have an electric fence though if you don't ring them else they will happily dig right next to the fencing and just burrow their way out. In many ways, curiosity is great for giving them character but can also make them a handful.

I admire the care and attention and love that your mum has for these animals. As a vegan though I am highly conflicted because I know that ultimately all this, is to send them to slaughter for food, which is readily available in uk supermarkets. I hate the cliche of if she really loved them she wouldn’t send them to their death, but i can’t move away from that. It saddens me to know that in 1 or 2 years time, most of the animals on the farm will have been replaced with new ones. If you can do an episode exploring more about what happens when these animals get sent to slaughter I think it would do the series justice to complete the farming process as I notice that topic is shyed away from consistently.
