The father in the beginning was not really referring to the loss of her "virtue" when he said she would never be beautiful again (in my opinion) - he was talking about the actual physical damage they did to her in the beating - broken jaw, etc. Plastic surgery could only do so much in the late 40s/early 50s - if it was bad enough, some of that damage could be permanent.

I think Michael's calm ruthlessness was developed during WWII. He aserced in the Marine Corps, which means he almost certainly fought against the Japanese. They were brutal, sadistic, even animalistic, and they could not be reasoned with. So Michael learned that he should kill all of his enemies, rather than making deals with them.

Coppola had a hard fought uphill battle with this one: The studio didn't really want Coppola, Brando, or Pacino for this. They didn't want it to be a period film, but set in the 70s. Also they wanted a modern pop soundtrack rather than the iconic score it has. It's hard to imagine how much worse this would've been had the studio gotten it's way.

A bit of trivia: 1. Lenny Montana, the person playing Luca Brasi, wasn't a true actor. He actually flubbed his lines. But Francis Ford Coppola felt it so genuine, he kept the scene as it is. 2. During the scene of the hit on Stracci (in the revolving door), an actual mob hit was occurring a couple of blocks down the street.

You can't have Michael challenge Sonny. He would be going against family. You don't side against the family. It's kind of an important rule. Overall, I appreciated your reaction and watching you try to figure stuff out. As others have said, you should watch G2. Ooohh yeah you're totally right. Honestly the more distance I got from the film the more arbitrary I felt that criticism was. I think that was an example of my brain following the tracks of modern film making, because I think capitalising on conflict that way is a modern trope in a lot of ways. I prefer the way the film went with it in hindsight. But you're right, there was only one way it COULD have gone about it.

Michael had leadership written all over him, learned mostly in the military (even down to steadiness under fire) but also observing, while growing up, his father and the lieutenants around Don Vito.
@RoosterCogburn1008

I always interpreted the lack of subtitles in the restaurant scene to emphasize that the dialogue doesn't matter. We as the audience know that Michael is there to kill Sollozo and the police chief--no amount of talk is going to change that. The negotiations, the deal making, the exchange that happens in Italian, all meaningless. Their words are wind. It hits home for the audience that sitting down at the table is all a show. I really liked your in-depth analysis as the film progressed, even pausing it to lay out your thoughts, instead of just having a summary opinion at the end. You should definitely react to the Godfather II, there's a lot to chew on.

This film made unknown Al Pacino a super star. He's a "civilian" because the plan is that he will bring the family "business" into legitimacy.
@zq9m3xh8
@zq9m3xh8 2 жыл бұрын
Late getting here, but hopefully you'll see this comment. Couple things, Michael had no intentions of coming back to "take over the family business" while he was in Sicily. He did his part and was hiding out. He probably had plans to return home and perhaps marry Kay (before he met Appolonia, of course) after his dad took care of the details of clearing him of Sollozzo's killing, obviously. It doesn't seem like he had any plans to have any further involvement once he got home. However, he may even have had thoughts of staying somewhat involved in the business in a lower level, but as far as he was concerned, Sonny was inevitably going to be the head. The only reason Michael took over was BECAUSE of Sonny's murder. So there never would have been any conflict/confrontation between Michael and Sonny anyway. That being said, Sonny's unexpected demise, coupled with his new bride's murder (the bomb was meant for Michael) made him extremely vengeful, and that catapulted him into the leadership role that he never otherwise intended. I could go on and bore you even further, but I shall spare you that indignity. Great reaction and I loved your thoughts and insights.
@gmunden1

Appolonia was always Michael's true love. She was the perfect wife for him. This proves true all the way through the sequels. Kay and Michael's relationship is doomed to fail as she is in denial of what his role is in the Corleone family while, at the same time defying him.
@colinaudette291
@colinaudette291 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the book does a better job of showing how Apollonia was a better match for Michael. I mean in the movie she might have said 3 words at the most, in the book the entire sequence of Michael in Sicily is portrayed as almost dreamlike, almost too good to be true. And then of course when she dies it shatters that dream for him. The coldness of his heart really starts to take over after she dies, and the coldness continues to grow through the trilogy
@MrAitraining
@MrAitraining 2 жыл бұрын
Appolonia dying and then him marrying kay was terrible for business and the future. Appolonia would have pumped out the kids and not be a source of stress or guilt the way Kay was. Honestly, after the car bomb, Michael should have just grabbed up the next cute farm girl from sicily and brought her home to america to cook and crank out sons for him.

Some of the extras in the flim including actors that play Carlo and luca were legit members of the Colombo family or had some ties with them

@@TylerAlexander If you do any reading amongst the cognoscenti in the Godfather fan base, you will quickly discover that Part III is generally thought to be noticeably inferior to the first two. I don't entirely agree with this popular wisdom; the film, for me, gets better every time I see it, and there is a particular development with Connie that I found to be one of the best, and easily one of the most disturbing, in the entire series. No further spoilers, but I am pretty confident you will see where I am going with this comment when you watch Part III.

You're right about modern directors, always with the staccato dialog. If you like Brando, please give him a look in Julius Caesar made by MGM in 1953. Brando as Marc Antony, James Mason as Brutus, Greer Garson as Calpurnia, Edmund O'Brien as Casca, Deborah Kerr as Portia, John Gielgud as Cassius. You'll love The Bard's words delivered by all. The man playing Don Barzini is Richard Conte, who was blessed with talent and wonderful opportunities to be both protagonist and villain over many years. Give a movie called "Call Northside 777" a look. Conte plays a real historical character who was framed for murder in the 1920s. James Stewart is the star but Conte is the soul of the film.

Fantastic reaction!! "This first 20 minutes is unfolding like a novel" - Of course the movie was based on a bestselling novel, although Coppola did a LOT of rewriting and adaptation. But your main point is absolutely correct. It shows rare and brave artistry to sit back and let things develop. Rare and brave now, certainly, but also rare and brave in 1972. "We don't really live in a democracy..." - I know EXACTLY what you mean, and you are 100% right. "No one in modern filmmaking does that" (lingers over an atmospheric scene) - Ohhhh, don't get me started! "I need to see more of Marlon Brando" - My top recommendation is Last Tango in Paris; great movie, great acting. Really hope you will watch and react to Godfather Part 2. Thanks!

In the book, it’s explained the difference between how Michael feels for Kay and Apalonia. He is hit by “the thunderbolt” when he sees Apalonia. Just immediate animal instinct to possess her. He even gets a surge of jealousy when she smiles at her brother. It’s super gross, BUT is a symbol of him absorbing the primal culture of his father’s country. Also, in the book, she’s a few months pregnant when she dies. 😢

If you really want to see and understand how much of a great actor Marlon Brando was and why he is praised so much, I would recommend you to watch "A Streetcar Named Desire", the second movie on which he has ever played. Watch that movie and observe carefully how realistic his acting was compared to how hollywood movie actors played in those times, meaning in the 50s and even compared to every other actors present in that movie. Michael is established early on as a decorated marine corp veteran of WW2 Pacific theater. Tarawa, Guam, Guadalcanal were talking, but this goes over the heads of many viewers. Things like the hospital bluff and even the restaurant assassination would be a piece of cake for Michael, no stranger to close range mortal combat and targeted assassination.

The characters are archetypal and genuinely representative of humanity. Archetypes have meaning as they are representative of transcendent concepts. IMO, today's movie making generally finds those concepts politically and philosophically outdated. Associations with words like "platforming", "patriarchal", "sexist", "misogynist" and the like would not allow such a movie to be supported by today's industry, IMO.

I dont understand why act like a man is a bad phrase nowadays. Act like a Man means just that stop acting like a little boy and act like a grown man. It just means act like a adult. I mean i know we all try to be woke but men and women should be allowed to be proud of there genders. I am a man i find very offensive to be called they or them.
@TylerAlexander
@TylerAlexander 2 жыл бұрын
That's alright, I'm happy to explain. The issue arises because that's not all it means. So often 'act like a man' is used to perpetuate this idea that men can't cry, can't emote in any way they like because it's hard wired into our society that a man should be a certain thing. The truth is, a man can be whatever he likes. He can like to sew, to wear nice clothes, he's allowed to cry and sing and dance and nothing will make him any less of a man. To my mind accepting one's own feelings and expressing them, even if this means crying makes you more of a man than holding it in would and, ultimately, holding it in does more harm to both yourself and those around you in the long run anyway. EDIT: That's not to say holding it in or being forced to hold your feelings in makes you less of a man or 'weaker'. The fault in that situation simply lies in the one using the phrase 'act like a man'. So, specifically in the scene I think you're mentioning (it's been a little while since I made this video), my problem with the phrase is because Don is telling whatsisface to act like a man because he's showing vulnerability. It's an archaic interpretation of what a man should be, and we know better now and we should practise being better. It's not about 'trying to be woke'. It's about showing genuine empathy to anyone of any gender because everyone deserves that right. As for being offended by being called they/them well...that's something you'll have to work at on your own. They/them is specifically gender neutral, it's not assigning you a gender you're not, it's not taking anything away from you. You're allowed to identify as a man and be proud to be a man but consider that some people aren't even accepted or allowed to identify as the gender they KNOW they are, because others can't accept that men or women are anything but THIS or THAT (insert examples of 'societal norm' at your leisure). Ultimately, I believe the thing we should all be striving for is being the best PERSON we can be. That's not to say you can't make decisions for yourself about the man you want to be. But I think it's important to accommodate alongside that a respect for anyone of any gender and, in this specific example, other men and their experiences and interpretations of the use of the phrase we're talking about.

I had someone say this when I was at 200 or so. Your mindset is so weird. Sure, throw a bigger number at me like it's an insult and remind me of my growth 😂 Not everyone wants to wear the same outfit every day.

It's his way of reacting... What tf's your problem ? If you like the other reactions go watch them... Wtf are you doing here ? Don't teach him what to do, it's his channel and he'll do whatever he wants. So, shut up !

I hope you’ll go back and watch the film again without talking, for your own appreciation. You miss, in several scenes, how the “lingering” in scenes builds an incredible tension. The hospital sequence. The phone call and the shooting in the restaurant (listen to the sound!). That’s its genius.

@@marzipan2115 did you ever consider why I didn't put those tense parts in my video? I was watching the fucking film. Obviously 🙄 hence why I wasn't talking/reacting which explains their absence from the video. From your comment I think you'd agree I'm allowed to leave some parts out in order to just enjoy the film, no? Honestly, it's like those who leave these kinds of comments don't understand they're watching an edited video. I pause to talk. I don't miss any of the film. If I do, I rewind. It's a function that's existed for decades at this point. PLEASE. Use at least one braincell.

Yes, I understand - I know it’s edited. And you did comment later about the techniques of building tension Coppola uses. You had talked a lot about the “lingering” - the scenes taking time to play out - during/over the scenes where the tension is mounting BECAUSE of the “lingering.” Maybe its my appreciation of those scenes and how the tension builds that I didn’t want them interrupted so often. Let them play out a bit, then make your points. That’s all.
