About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. This is one of their heavier one. As I could see, you appreciate it. The high level of musicianship of all band members, the stellar vocals and charisma of Floor Jansen, our Dutch metal queen, together here with Marco Hietala, the bass guy. I would like to make a correction from the beginning: Floor Jansen is the woman of OUR dreams .. :) Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. Band is Finnish, Floor is their third, and my opinion, best female vocalist and is Dutch and they have a British member (Troy) who plays various pipes and stringed instruments plus backing vocals but not always obvious on stage. Anything from Wacken is superb or any other concert 2012 onwards. Emppu the lead guitarist doesn't get the credit he deserves as he plays what is required and doesn't need an ego trip. Marco is bassist and second lead vocalist but also plays twin guitar on some songs. Tuomas is the keyboard player and writes probably 90% of the music. And the drummer featured is Jukka recently replaced due to health issues.

Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, agility, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. It is apparent when listening to her sing that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres and was a vocal coach herself. It is incredible how she is able to take any song and make it her own. This woman is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to a band that has always been great until 2013 when they officially hired the undisputed Queen of Metal Floor Jansen, making Nightwish the greatest band on the planet.

if you like change ups then methinks you are gonna love Nightwish as they are the masters of transition. This band really doesn't care about the style of music or classification of the music they play and that means that there is something for everyone and if you are willing to explore all different musical styles you will have a very enjoyable time.

I think Nightwish is the band for you. Lots of swings and turns, you never know where the song goes next. That is the magic of Tuomas, the keyboardist, the band founder, leader, main composer, lyrics writer, arranger. He has the kind of group with him that can deliver, make the most of the songs. They can perform 2 hours and keep the high quality till the end of the concert. For example Ghost Love Score, a 10 minute song, was the song number 13/15 in Wacken 2013. A very challenging song to sing, but Floor's vocals were unbelievable. The same can be said about the band. Or The Greatest Show on Earth. The last song in Tampere 2015 and at Wembley Arena 2015, a 20 minute giant of a song. Perfect execution by the whole band. Greetings from Helsinki Finland! Welcome to your first stop of a probably long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey. This band is from Finland. Tuomas is the keyboarder, Songwriter, composer. Marco is playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this. Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song. Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums. Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well. Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls This gig was at Wacken. Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013. It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year. Here are some suggestions for your next stops: -> Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013): THE "traditional first song" to get into Nightwish. Floor is showing diferent capabilities and you can get a first understanding of Tuomas capability of songwriting -> There are only great songs from Wacken: „Story Time“ and "Ever Dream" are catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones. -> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-) -> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.) -> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional) -> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, … -> Elvenjig / Elvenpath (Buenos Aires): Awesome intro and it continues on that level -> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is one of the two most epic songs. The title is not about the gig, but about the topic of the song: The evolution of mankind. -> "The Poet and the Pendulum“ (Wembley) is my personal absolute masterpiece of Nightwish. Be sure to know the background of this song ahead (short version see below *) ***** From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. It‘s a good idea to hear the album in the given order, but nevertheless here are some of my options to some of the songs. -->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself --> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it. --> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending. -> „Pan“ is just an amazing ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“. -> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor --> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish. -> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice. --> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course. The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world. ***** If you'd like to Explore Floor on her own: Beste Zangers Just in case (which I can really recommend) you're going to do "Beste Zangers" make sure you take the clips posted by "jenniezelf" on KZfaq as she has also included the talking / interviews before and after with english subtitles. The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them. It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. So it is very interesting to get to know the story behind each song. And it will help to understand the reactions of the other singers. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary. ***** * Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“ Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time. As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears. One detail showing the ingenuity of Tuoams: Exactly three minutes after the words "Now I have only three minutes and counting" he is "killed" by the pendulum. And then everything becomes dark and there is just this fading heartbeat of the dying poet. Also two different choirs (adults, children) as needed. In live concerts, they play it from the backing tape and perform themselves on top of it. Nice reaction and what a great band you have just discovered! I notice you've already had the 'intro' from the army so welcome! This band has layers and you will come to love them, I'm sure. They are absolutely amazing live, as you noted in your reaction, and the Wacken 2013 concert is one of their best. 'Ghost Love Score' is an interesting choice from the same concert, 'Storytime' shows off Floor's versatility and then any of the rest of the concert can be reviewed at your leisure, really. 'The Islander' at Tampere in 2015 (I think...) is a fabulous change of pace and is really worth review. Two of their most important works are 'The Poet and the Pendulum' (Wembley 2016) and 'The Greatest Show on Earth' (Tampere 2015) and these are best appreciated once some knowledge of the band and their experiences have been acquired. They deal with subjects as important and personal as grief and evolution, respectively. Good to see another Brit reacting to Nightwish. They were supposed to playing Wembley on the 18th of December but that's been delayed until May (probably to be delayed further...) but I cannot wait to see them again!

You get it Tyler. Death by or of a romance. You should have turned on the cc to see the lyrics. You started off with one of the more aggressive and heavy songs from Nightwish. Yes Finland, except for Floor, the Dutch queen of symphonic metal. You will probably like Nightwish. They usually use much more symphonic sounds and elements in their music. The viking is Marko who is a talented singer in his own right. Floor is a highly trained singer who has some operatic and musical theater training as well. I am not sure what your favorite music type is, but Nightwish covers many different styles. Most reactor are asked to begin the journey with "Ghost Love Score", official video, from this same Wacken 2013 show. You will find that Nightwish is one of the best live bands on the planet. Hi mate from the Midlands, these are a superb band, try some more of their songs such as Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013 also Storytime, Song Of Myself, Last Ride Of The Day, Everdream, Dark Chest Of Wonders also from Wacken, and eventually Poet And The Pendulum but that needs research and understanding of the songs meaning, it is a powerful one. Floor Jansen the lead singer is Dutch, the band are from Finland, she can sing a massive range and styles from classical, operatic, metal, growls, to see her growl watch Yours Is An Empty Hope from Wembley, she was also on a Dutch tv show Bestezangers where she sang in many languages and did an amazing duet with Henk Poort singing Phantom Of The Opera, it is sensational.
