It took about 35min to clear the crowd off and continue the game. Its a tridition that the crowd runs on for 100th goal in a season (hasn't happened for a few years now), plus 1000, plus when the overall record is broken (when Tony Lockett kicked his 1300th career goal - he still holds the record at 1369 or similar). His record may never be beaten. The previous record of 1299 had stood since the 1930s!

My first Spontaneous Pitch Invasion was in 1971, at the age of 9. My mother (a mad Doggies supporter) took my sister and myself to the final game of Bulldogs Legend EJ (Teddy) Whitten. We got there really early and had seats right behind the goal posts. As we were nearing the end of the game, my mother perched both my sister and I on top of the fence, with one simple instruction: "Go Get Him!" When the siren sounded, over the fence we went with mum in hot pursuit. Ah fond memories. My second spontaneous pitch invasion was at the MCG when Lillee and Marsh retired. I managed to get to Dennis Lille pretty quickly and gave him a pat on the back, before being surrounded by the crowd. SPIs are pretty much always a jolly affair in Australia.

When you mark the ball, your opponent has to stand the mark. You will see the umpire point to the spot on the ground where the ball was marked and the opposing player has to stand there (if the marking player has chosen to take an unimpeded kick). The marking player can then take basically as long a run up as he wants, but he cannot pass the mark before kicking the ball. Taking a run up gives his kick greater power and thus the ball travels further. The marking player has 10 seconds to kick the ball before the umpire will award it to the opposing team. If the mark is taken inside 50 (metres), you have up to 30 seconds to kick. This allows for the likelihood that there are lots of players inside the 50 metre area, so you need to plot your kick more carefully to get around them

In regards to how far can a player run up to kick the ball. The umpire marks the position where either a mark or free kick is awarded. Then the opposition player will stand on that spot (on the mark) The player taking the kick is then able to walk back as far as they like to buy them space to run up to the mark, where the opposition player is standing. This is what we call "The Run Up", which gives the player momentum to get more power into the kick, getting maximum distance with the kick and getting enough elevation over the opposition player guarding the mark.

Hi guys. Firstly, the newer vid from the AFL explained some things better but left other stuff out, like player size. Our game is played by all sizes, with the only requirement being super athleticism and toughness. Nonetheless, you now have a better idea of how the game works. The Buddy 1000th goal footage was a short version and didn't show how many people ran onto the field. Ther were more fans on the ground than off, and one woman was sprinkling her dad's ashes, while others bought wine and sat on blankets and enjoyed a picnic. The guy who caught the ball after the goal bolted from the stadium with a very valuable trophy in his bag. He later returned it to Buddy. Some players were trapped on the field opposite the rooms, and they exited the ground and walked around the stadium to re-enter and join their teammates. It was total pandemonium, and the game hadn't finished!! Great scenes, and only possible when fans are united in their love for a sport, and not embroiled in hostility and thuggery. The two teams with a massive rivalry, and who attract 100,000 fans to a single game, is Collingwood (The Magpies), and Essendon, (The Bombers.) The ANZAC day game is bigger than the Grand Final. Cheers from OZ. 👍

So a few other things for you. Opposition players must stand still on the mark. (apart from being the word for catch, mark is also describing the spot where the opposition must stand where a player has marked the ball.) If the opponent moves before the player takes his kick, the umpire will award at 50 meter penalty to the kicking player, meaning he will be brought forward 50 m. 50 meter penalties can be given for a number of other reasons, including if the opposition player picks up the ball and does not throw it directly back to the kicker, crashing into the player at the moment he marked the ball, another opposition player running between the marking player and the guy standing on the mark. Arguing with or abusing the umpire will also cost a 50 meter penalty. As told, hitting the goal post becomes a point, but if a player hits the outside point post, it is considered kicking out on the full, which gives a free kick to the opposition. When a player is tackled he must dispose of the ball by hand or foot immediately. The umpire will bounce the ball if he considers that the tackled player did not have, “prior opportunity” to release the ball. The tackling player must roll to the side of a player when they hit the ground, because if he falls straight in the players back it will be a free kick against the tackling player for “in the back.” If a player takes a mark, or is given a free kick before the siren goes, The player is still allowed to take a shot on goal if he is deemed to be in reasonable distance of goal. There’s quite a number of other rules, so via the Internet you can pick up videos or books that explain the lot. Hope this is a little extra help. Cheers.

Not sure if already mentioned in comments but in regards to comment about jumping on shoulders vs having to tackle below the shoulders. The difference between them is when going for the mark, players will for most part have eyes only for the ball. If the player attempting the mark makes un unrealistic attempt at the mark ie. taking eyes off the ball/looking at player, jumping to early and taking player out etc. this can all be deemed by the umpire as a possible free kick.

Loving your enthusiasm. The Swans are known as "The Bloods" down here. Buddy kicked his 1000th early this year ... the first guy to do so in decades ... many think it won't happen again as the game has changed a lot over that time. The crowd has stormed the ground each time so they were fully expecting this. The game stopped for about half an hour. One member of the crowd ran straight into a Geelong player who was trying to get out of the way. The guy fell over and the Geelong player (Irishman Zach Tuohy) picked up his wallet and keys and chased him to give them back. CCTV captured two Swans players outside the ground ... they decided it was easier than crossing the field to get back to their clubrooms. After a 15 minute break or so, (once Buddy got back to the rooms) they resumed the game ... Swans had it under control by that stage though.

Well done gentlemen and love you're enthusiasm. Big dues to you BP2 in recognising that the name of the game is Australian Rules/footy as opposed to AFL. The AFL as an organisation (not unlike Coca Cola) have systematically over the last 30 years hijacked the name of the game. The AFL is indeed the premier competition when it comes to the game of Aussie Rules, HOWEVER, there are literally hundreds of other leagues Australia wide that cater to all skill levels and both genders. I l played in excess of 300 games of footy in my career from age 8 through 34 in different states, clubs and leagues yet was not good enough to make it to the AFL. I take great pride in saying I played Aussie Rules and don't have the right to say I played IN the AFL.

The funny thing about Brits putting on an Aussie accent is that it sounds exactly like a Melbourne private schooled person - so not wrong, per se. Kneeing someone in the head is legal if you have eyes on the ball. If you use your hands at all, it is high contact or in the back.

As long as you don’t use your hands to climb on the guys back, most things are legal. Adversely, if you don’t take the mark, can be ruled an unrealistic attempt and free kick given to the other team

Unwritten law. Can’t push a player in the back, but you can in a marking contest. But guess what? If you attempt to ride on someone for a mark, but you’re not successful in marking the ball, then it will be paid as a push in the back. So it’s all about whether you pull off the mark or not.

6:05 As long as your "prime objective" is the ball, what would otherwise be deemed illegal contact (too high, in the back, etc) is deemed to be incidental contact as is ignored. If you push then go for the ball, it is illegal, but as long as you're trying to mark the ball, and it is one movement, you're ok.

I’ve been a diehard supporter of the game since my first breath. I grew up in a region that slept on the beautiful game for the not so good local Rugby League team (Newcastle Knights 😂). I really love watching foreigners watch our beautiful game, it’s truly an underrated global sport that combines the best aspects of the best sports in the world including European Football, American Football, Basketball, Rugby and Gaelic Football. I just so happened to be at the Buddy 1000th Goal Match and had the best seat in the house. I remember standing on the fence exactly behind the goals Buddy was kicking towards. I remember seeing the ball go straight through the goal posts right above me, then I jumped off the fence and ran straight for Buddy who was 40 metres away from me. I was one of the first people to get to him, I can see myself holding a green clapper in the close up shots too. It was a really special moment in my life as someone who’s childhood hero was Buddy Franklin coming from a region where I was bullied so much for loving a rival sport. I especially loved how Buddy’s 1000 happened in a city very similar to my home town in terms of how Rugby League has always had a strong presence in Sydney (happened also right down the road from the National Rugby League Headquarters 🤣). I hope you enjoyed what you saw and I hope you enjoy the sport just as much as we do. Go Hawks! ❤

I watched the Mayne Football team at the Windsor Park Oval back in the mid '70's - took me forever to get the drift as I came from Canterbury/Bankstown territory, "Berries" as they were then. Never saw AFL before and it astounded me that the Mayne Club was started in 1924. Amazing to watch after stop / start League or Rugby. Such a free flowing sport. Also as a teenage girl the eye candy was waaaay better than the over-muscled macho morons who played league. Too many league players have most of their muscle between their ears.

What team to follow? Collingwood (The Magpies). Black and White - A team with one of the strongest following and history. Only team to have won 4 premierships in a row. And a team where if you don't love them, you hate them! Although a lot of non-Collingwood supporters have found themselves conflicted this year. They changed their game style to all out attack from the opening bounce. At the end of the year opposing supporters were admitting "I can't believe I'm saying this but I really enjoy watching the Pies play"! After finishing 17th (second last) in 2021 they were so close this year - they lost to both Grand Finalists during the final series - to the Cats by 1 goal, and missed out on making it to the Grand Final by losing to the Swans by 1 point! The biggest rivalry? It would have to be Collingwood/Carlton (The Blues). Since their first meeting in 1897, they have played each other 262 times, the Pies have won 130, the Blues 128 and 4 draws. They have played each other in 6 Grand finals with Carlton winning 5 of them.

Watch Buddy Franklin score his 1,000th goal. Yes, that was while the game was still on. No one hurt Buddy, if you watch the crowd lift him if he is getting a bit squashed. Correct umpires don’t send players off the ground. Umpires can however report a player to the Tribunal for striking another player or kicking in danger (near an opponent’s head) for instance, and they will have to front the Tribunal before their next match . Players may have to face match forfeits and/or $ fines if found guilty of an infraction of the rules.

Oh, footy fans can be brutal towards the opposing team's players, they take it all very seriously. And it always makes me laugh how the players are constanly banging into each other for no reason, anand pushing each other around at every opportunity, it's almost like they are doing it for show half the time. Australians call it AFL aswell. 2 people who follow the sport, probably refer to it as footy, but it is common to call it AFL if one of those people dont really follow the sport (obviously this is a generalisation). Nobody would think it weird if you say AFL. Having said that, nobody really would say "in going to the AFL tomorrow" in this sense people would use the word footy. 👍

When you consider he is only the 5th to achieve that in the history of a game codified before English football, it is a huge achievement. Also the pitch invasion was by Swans and Geelong fans, the opposition - it was just a great achievement and everyone was there for "The Moment" - regardless of the team. That is the way AFL is - the Yobbo's are soon removed from a stadium and if you breach rules such as hurling racial slurs at players or spitting etc. you get a lifetime ban from attending games. They have your picture at the gates - it keeps it a family friendly environment.

Also ..... yes , Guernseys , glad you noticed that . I also find that curious . I am Australian and I can't explain it . "Marking" competitions have their own rules regarding fouls . Some things that you can't do in general play you can do in a Marking competition. For example , as you note , you can use your opponent as a "step ladder" to mark the ball , if however , you use this maneuver and don't end up catching the ball , you can be pinged by the umpire for an "unrealistic attempt" .

Hey BP1, non-Aussies trying Aussie accents tend to add "i" to the "a", so gday becomes gddai, and mate becomes miite instead of m8, for some reason. So to get the accent, the "i" needs to go. But you gave it a good go. Cheers!

Brilliant game to watch is our little game👍👍 I'm from West Oz ,yep over the other side of this big brown land..& I support the Fremantle Dockers ⚓⚓⚓ We were the big improvers in 2022 & 2023 is looking bloody exciting😉👍 Oz has 3 states that are Aussie rules footy.. Victoria,South Australia & Western Australia. NSW & Queensland are rugby league states. Tho each have a couple of teams in the AFL comp. Tassie is still trying to get a team in. The Northern Territory has no teams but plays both codes. So yeah,I'll nominate one of you lads to support Freo⚓ Purple & White 💜🤍 🍻🥃

Hi again, since getting back from Turkey, I can’t seem to stay awake after 10pm, anyway, more football, Australian again, is this the one that’s quite brutal? Yes it is. Wow, you can use your opponent as a step ladder, omgosh. If this was the UK they would be wearing suits of armor. It is compelling viewing. Great upload and reaction ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think you should adopt Carlton blues as your second team. Western Bulldogs are you first team so fair enough. Carlton has a rich history filled with success and champions. Currently and recently Carlton hasn't had much success recently and normally finish closer to the bottom. This year was different. Not in the final eight but we had lots of changes and have played better this year for years. Next year we will take another huge step, a lot of people think Carlton will finish in the top 8. So, hop in the blues bandwagon and see success in 2023. I can even link a few videos at your request, if you'd like?

The joy on your faces at the pitch invasion is wonderful. You two are hooked. 😄 This "Beginners" video covers less game 'details' than the previous one, but "Beginners" is much clearer. Best Wishes, Chaps. ☮ G-Man. 😎 Please keep _Conan Plays Australian Rules Football With The Sydney Swans_ kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJ6Gh7Z4sanFYYE.html on your list. While Conan is 6ft 4in, he has the sporting physique of a ten year old. At some point, it might be worth reacting to Gaelic Football, and maybe International Rules. Gaelic Football looks similar to "Footy" but uses a round ball, doesn't have the two outside posts. It does have a crossbar and goal net, in the net is 3, over the crossbar is 1. Bouncing the ball isn't enough to keep running, it must be 'bounced'/'tapped' off the toes. Less physical than AFL. International Rules is a compromise between "Aussie Rules" and "Gaelic Football". It enables an Australian National team to compete against an Irish National team using players from their respective leagues. Maybe not enough games to be anything more than an interesting novelty.

"the limit" comes if theyre attempting a mark. If you kneed someoen in the head when not attempting a mark its always a freekick to the other team. if youre realistically attempting to catch the ball on a legal mark you'd be allowed to. Youre right about it being friendly rivalries. Besides a few drunk macho idiots, fans sit together, youd go to games with friends that support opposite teams etc. No segregation of fans or anything like that.

Does that even matter mate? Treat everyone as equal's, he is mixed blood so why dont you talk about his Scottish/ Irish or English roots. But no one does that, my daughter is 1/8 indigenous but she is 7/8 something else and we as a family dont focus on that 1/8 anymore than we focus on the rest as she is Australian, so stop with the virtue signaling. tackling is straight forward. You cant tackle above the shoulders, its to protect the head. And you can't tackle below the waist, this is deemed like tripping a player. When you take a mark the opposition player must stand where the mark itself was taken. The player who took the mark can then go back so he can kick it over that players head ,players generally go back about 10 or 15 metres [gives them space to run in for the kick] so the opposition player won't be able to touch it when they kick it over them either in general play or at goals.Players standing the mark can raise their hands and even jump up to try and touch it as the player kicks it but they can't go over the spot where the mark was taken, umpires usually tell the players where the Mark was taken and will award a 50 meter penalty if the opposition player goes past that spot while the player is kicking the ball. When a player marks the ball near goals you sometimes see them directed to tight angles, the umpires come to this angle by basically drawing an imaginary line from where the mark was actually taken and the centre of the 2 big goal posts that gets you 6 points

If you take a speccy almost all bets are off, in terms of high contact (a full on kick in the face would probably give away a free, for instance). This is such an exciting part of the game, they basically allow high contact that would otherwise be illegal. However ... if you DON'T succesfully take the mark, you can potentially give away a free kick. Once a upon a time the umpire would have just awarded a free for high contact or for pushing in the back, but they've also started calling free kicks for an "unrealistic attempt".

No cages in any Australian sport, spectators from opposing teams stand side by side in friendly rivalry. No fences around the the field seperating spectators from the players on the field. Of course there is the rare incident at the top level soccer games, no surprise to that. When that happens, Aussies scream ban the soccer from Australia as we take pride in the true meaning to the word Sport.

An invasion to celebrate 1000 or let alone 100 goals will probably never happen again. The game has chamged so much over the last 20 years, becoming so much more defensive. Its so so hard for an individual to kick 6 to 10 goals in a match now. 5 is the new 10.

Support Geelong. They're a class act on and off the field. Don't disregard them because they just won in 2022, as they've been mocked for making the finals every year just to go out without a fight. They have the oldest player list and the next 10 years are going to be very interesting to see whether they can rebuild on the run or finally tumble down the table.

To figure out rhe rules around tackles you first need to study and understand the rules around rhe breakdown in Rugby. Then when your confident you can ref a game of Rugby chuck all that out cos Aussie rules is nothing like that. You have shown the persistence and capacity to have a chance though. As for infringing when marking the ball it's simple. If you catch the ball the umpire will forgive most sins but if you don't you'll likely be penalised. Officially that's called:- if you had eyes and focus and getting the ball anything else is incidental, if you don't catch it it's an unrealistic attempt.

Much better having an Aussie explaining the rules of the game. The previous (official) AFL clip is mainly aimed at the US market (16 yards) and narrated by 1 to be make it easier to understand. Fellas, the guys controlling the game are umps , umpires ! Not refs. For another 2 teams to follow, don't support the colours you're wearing. In 1 case, you'll be hated by 90% of the football following (Collingwood (Magpies), black and white) and blue and white in North Melbourne (Kangaroos) who lost 20 games this year and finished bottom !! Don't support a Vic based team. Brisbane has been in the top 4 in the last 2 years and has a real chance next year. Sydney missed out badly this year in the GF but you can't go wrong there either. Check out the best of Buddy, Eddie Betts and Cyril Rioli to see some real skill. Has to be seen to be believed in much of the play.
