Mahomes' dad was an MLB pitcher. Mahomes played baseball, basketball and football in high school and believes his training in basketball and pitching training in baseball improved his quarterback skills. He's unique because he throws the football like a baseball pitcher, using multiple arm angles.

My favorite Mahomes moment: This year's Super Bowl. Think a QB in a Super Bowl is focused on a few things during the game? Think again: When Skyy Moore made that touchdown, Mahomes was right there, screaming, "Gimme the ball! GIVE ME THE BALL!" Why? Because he knew that was Moore's FIRST NFL touchdown (imagine getting it in the Super Bowl!) and Mahomes WANTED TO SAVE THE BALL FOR HIM, as a souvenir. He didn't want them throwing it in the stands. That's Mahomes as a teammate and a leader. My all-time favorite Mahomes moment. Oh, and yeah, he's a pretty good QB, too.

He’s so great that even massive Bills fans like him. The amount of respect he showed towards Josh Allen after the 13 second game is something you can’t forget. He knew Allen just got absolutely railroaded and lost maybe his best shot at a SB. Mahomes didn’t even celebrate with his teammates, he went straight to 17. Elite QB, elite professional.

Kansas City was sort of written off before the season. Most people still had them as a playoff team, but there were quite a few who believed they weren't going to win their division, and there were certainly a fair share of people who thought that the Bills and the Bengals were the 2 best teams in the AFC, and that the Chiefs had regressed because of the loss of Tyreek Hill.

Tyreek Hill is known as the cheetah because he is the fastest WR in the NFL. A lot of people believed Patrick Mahomes success was partly because of how dangerous Tyreek Hill is. Defenses had to play KC different because of him. So when they traded Tyreek to Miami most people thought KC wouldn’t be as good as they were the previous season.

In 1970 the NFL merged with the new more pass heavy American Football League. They split them into two different conferences within one NFL league. The Super Bowl is played between the 2 NFL conference winners. (NFC) National Football Conference winner vs the (AFC) American Football Conference winners.

4k plus yards is a good year now with the passing game being more prominent in the NFL. 5k yards is doable yet rare and an exceptional feat.

When the NFL and AFL merged the NFL had 16 teams and the AFL 10. Three NFL teams, the Colts, Browns and Steelers agreed to move to the AFL, forming the AFC. The remaining 13 NFL teams formed the NFC. Interconference games were established, with the Super Bowl game to be played between the champions of the two conferences.

As a life long Broncos fan, I hate that hes in our division. But I can appreciate how great he is. He is going to rule the NFL for many years to come, he just does things nobody can do. Easily the best QB in the NFL at the moment.

If you get 3,000 yards and 25 TDs you had a good season. 4,000 yards and 35 TDs is an insanely good season. 5,000 yards and 45 TDs is breathtaking.

I don’t think he meant to hit Mahomes while out of bounds but the momentum and adrenaline cause him to stumble into Mahomes while out of bounds. Even when things aren’t intentional they will still be counted because it’s an obvious foul. After the game the camera would show him on the bench crying over his mistake. I personally think he deserves some sympathy for his mistake

Lamar, Hunt, and Davis of Oakland and Buddy Adams of Euston, all wanted to have a team in the old NFL. It was a good old boys club, and they weren’t let in so Lamar brought everybody together and they formed the American football league. The rest is history.

My favorite Mahomes moment was when he won the first Super Bowl in 2019. Been a Chiefs fan since 1988. I didn't think I'd ever see the Chiefs win the Super Bowl in my lifetime and definitely not more than one.

This last pre-season was so weird, because basically everyone had entirely written off the Chiefs. "Oh, the Raiders got a great receiver, so I'm sure the team that has had 2 winning seasons over the last NINE years is totally going to sweep this time." It was almost unhinged, seeing everyone write off the Chiefs because they had a receiver leave. It was like everyone simultaneously wanted a hot take, and the most popular hot take was "Lol Chiefs will be bad to middling despite having the best QB/TE combo in the League."

Mahomes like a lot of college athletes were 2 sport stars. He actually had a personal choice to either play baseball or football on the pro level. The accuracy of the sidearm and off balance jump throws come from playing baseball. Watch a INFEILDER in baseball making throws to 1st base and then watch Mahomes. Same technique.

Joe Namath was the first QB to throw for 4,000 in the late 60s or early 70s. For many years with a greater emphasis on the run, great passers would get 3,000+, but at the game shifted to a more pass oriented game, 4000+ is now not uncommon. Dan Marino passed for over 5,000 in 1984. A few QBs have since surpassed 5,000 including Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Ben Rothlisberger as well as a few others. it’s impossible today to know if the game will become more pass oriented in the future because a strong running game opens up the pass and a strong passing game opens up the run.

His stats are one of a kind, class of his own. I have been watching football for 35 years and have been a chiefs fan for that long, and I have never seen anything like this. I hoped he would be good when they drafted him, but never had any clue as to him being the best that has ever done it.

I can only imagine what was said between Mahomes and the team doctor in the locker room after he sprained his ankle, only to get right back on the field. The doctors almost never send players back on the field with that bad of an obvious limp, especially that quickly.

Great reaction. Boys. I'm a Denver Broncos fan, so we get to play this guy twice a year. He's incredible. As great as our defense was this year, he was still able to get the ball out when we had him surrounded. He was literally falling with two guys tackling him and somehow threw a touchdown. As far as the offensive line is concerned, the Chiefs lost the second Super Bowl they played because almost the entire offensive line was out besides the worst of the original starters. Mahomes was running for his life the entire game on an injured foot. The front office decided after that game that it would never let that happen again. So they are now pumping more resources into the OL than WR's. Because if Mahomes has time, he can make any competent WR look good.

It is important to consider Mahomes and the KC Chiefs in context. In 2012, the Chiefs finished the season with a 2-14 record - the worst in the NFL and therefore was awarded the Number 1 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Before the 2013 Draft, the Chiefs made a couple of important changes: 1) They signed Andy Reid (aka Big Red) as Head Coach. 2) They traded for a new QB, Alex Smith, at a cost of a second round draft pick in 2013 and what turned out to be another second round pick in 2014. In 2013, the Chiefs went 11-5 and appeared in the playoffs. In the ten years Reid has been at KC, the Chiefs have made the playoffs for nine of them. The Chiefs won their division (the AFC West) in seven years, finishing second during the remaining three years. It would be fair to state that the Chiefs have dominated their division for the tenure of Reid's presence. It has been a given for the past several years that KC would win their division - even before Mahomes was drafted in 2017. So, the football pundits and click baiters and soured teams in the AFC West were quick to pounce on the departure of Tyreek Hill during the 2022 offseason as grounds for expounding upon the demise of the Chiefs as a football powerhouse. It turns out that Tyreek Hill was an important part of the KC offense, but not irreplaceable. The 2022 Chiefs finished the season with the best record in the AFC and as Super Bowl Champions. - sj

If you ever have the time consider reacting to the Master Chief video by Joseph Vincent. It's about Patrick Mahomes first year starting in the NFL in 2018. He went on to throw for more than 5,000 yards and 50 passing touchdowns in a single season while earning MVP that year. Only two players have ever done both in the same season Patrick and Peyton Manning.

5000 passing yards in a season is rare. Under 10 total times its happened in NFL history and Mahomes has done it twice. Over 50 passing tds is just as rare if not even more and he threw for 50tds and 5000+ yards in his first season being the starter (only ever happened twice). A good qb season overall is 4000+ yards and 25-35 tds, a great one thats rather historic is 4000-4800 yards and 30-45 tds. Then theres the those outlier seasons listed above of over 5000 or over 50 tds. Its kinda like prime messi where he is a top goal scorer and assister multiple times in a season. Very very rarified air that Mahomes is in with his stats. What tops that all off tho is the fact he steps up in big games and in the postseason and is a winner. He isnt just putting up empty calorie stats. Sorry for the info dump but its the best way I can put it.

No there was no excuse for that defender to push Mahomes after he was out of bounds, and yes those passing yards are very impressive, the record is 5400ish for passing yards in a season and Mahomes has 5200+ that season

One reason that Chiefs fans are so excited for this current Mahomes era is that from 1970 until their Superbowl win in 2020, (50 years!) the Chiefs had only won 5 playoff games in that entire 50 year span. Since Mahome started as qb in the 2018 season, their regular season record is 64 wins against only 18 losses. They have won their division every year since Mahomes started, and they have 11 post season victories including 2 superbowl championships. This franchise has gone from a half century of ineffectiveness to a perennial champion.

Passing yards have gradually increased due to various rule changes basically throughout the games' history. There are moments, particularly in football, where you can see the game change because someone is doing something never done before. Dan Marino's 1984 season. He put up numbers that would be impressive in todays game, but he did it 40 years ago, without benefitting from the rule changes that have benefitted passers. Dan is a Hall Of Fame QB and one of the greatest pure passers ever.

5000 passing yards has only ever happened like 10 times. 40+ touchdowns is absolutely insane too.

The Chiefs were 9-1 to win the Super Bowl at the beginning of the season. Because we lost to the Bills and Bengals everyone was writing us off regardless of our record. It makes my $500 payout all the more sweeter

To put the passing yards thing into perspective, the average NFL quarterback throws for about 200 - 250 yards per game. Over the course of his career, Tom Brady averaged 266 yards per game. And Mahomes currently averages 303 yards per game, which is absolutely bonkers. During his first year as a starter, he averaged 318 yards per game and threw for 50 TDs. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are the only other guys to hit 50+ touchdown passes in a single season.

To give you an idea of how high Mahomes ranks for single-season passing yards, of the top 250, only 15 have reached over 5,000 yards. Mahomes is #4.

The man that pushed Mahomes out of bounds in the championship game was playing lights out just about the entire game. I guess he was just trying to maintain his momentum but got a greedy.

THE best thing is, Mahomes is just reaching what is considered his peak age, and it usually lasts 5 to 8 years depending on how beat up a players gets in that span... So, all these accomplishments happened before he reached his peak... Who knows what he might accomplish over the next half a dozen years...

Regarding the out of bounds hit, if you hit a QB out of bounds, that will be called every time. You just can't hit folk when they are already out of bounds.

4000 passing yards is elite level. 5000 is MVP level. For reference 5000 yards has been passed about 15 times. I believe Payton Manning is the record holder with around 5500.

Jaguars (with Trevor Lawrence at QB) had an amazing comeback to win the AFC south for a playoff spot. they won in the last week of the regular season against the Tennesee Titans who collsapsed to a 7-10 record and lost the division title. The Jaguars then made a comeback in the wild card round after being down 27-7 against the Chargers who were favored (especially by media and NFL fans) to win that game. I was listening to it on the radio while in a traffic jam coming back from a Syracuse Basketball game with my family that night. was able to tune in to the end on Tv around 11 PM or so.

That final drive in the AFC Championship, the Chiefs were having their way with the Bengals defense. Seriously, multiple first downs and big chunks of yards at a time. Meticulously driving down the field. The penalty didn't affect the outcome. The people who complain about the penalty aren't Chiefs fans and, somehow, forgot that you can't hit a guy 5 yards out of bounds. I never want to see a player hit late because of the risk of injury on the crowded, equipment laden sideline and the fact that players tend to stop protecting themselves. I also don't blame Ossai. He was just trying to make a play and lost track of where they were. He was the one who got hurt and people blamed him for a loss that wasn't all on him. In reality, he was one of the best performing defenders in the game. Just the two best teams of the season playing a really good game.

Of course, you don't really get the full story from a video like this. It was such a journey, starting with everyone doubting the Chiefs. There had been some of that before but it was bigger this season just because of losing Tyreek Hill. Then the season started and those occasional losses (which were basically never on Mahomes) would put doubt in even our minds. We'd seen some rough games before and Mahomes has never had a truly great defense. Maybe we couldn't win again...but then they ended the season strong. So we go into the playoffs feeling good, and almost immediately Mahomes gets hurt. You have no idea how that feels. The quarterback is so important, and when it's a weapon like Mahomes, the loss is amplified so much. Chad Henne came in for a few minutes and did his job, held it down until Mahomes could limp back in. He got through that game, powered through the game against the Bengals, and then got a couple weeks rest before the Super Bowl. We were all hopeful he was okay. But everyone was putting Jalen Hurts up there with Burrow and Allen and Herbert as the next QB to take down Mahomes, and the Eagles were seen as the better overall team by so many. The first half was fine, we didn't mind back and forth action...but imagine how it felt when Mahomes went down again. We were throwing up. My mom just straight up stopped watching the game, she couldn't handle it. But you saw what happened. We never should have doubted him. And I never will again.

23:00 where y’all talked about him getting great pass protection, part of it was play design. They ran a bootleg (where the qb rolls out to pass and sometimes has a moving pocket) which makes pass blocking easier since the o-line can “seal off” guys instead of having to keep a stable pocket. The downside to bootlegs is your ability has to be at least a little mobile and throwing windows are more difficult since you’re effectively limiting yourself to one side of the field.

They were saying he had the best record to the start of a career since the merger. It was basically a way of saying he’s off to the best start in the history of the modern NFL, or the last 50+ years.

Hey there The NFC and AFC are the 2 conferences of the nfl. They used to be their own leagues. Eventually they merged together and their new championship game was called the "Super Bowl". So when people say "since the merger" its the same thing as "in the Super bowl era." This is also why the AFC and NFC have their own side of the bracket ending in a "championship" game.

When we drafted him. I think it'd been like 20+ years at that point before we took a 1st round qb. My entire childhood we fielded alright teams but always had a aging veteran as the qb. Not homegrown if you will. Some merc brought in because a different team didn't want them. It almost seemed like we would never do it. We love our football here in KC. Like alot. Travis Kelce was not lying when he said "words cannot describe how much (mahomes) he means to this city." I

Greetings from Kansas City!!! We love us some Mahomes here that's for sure. To say he is King of this city would be an understatement. A couple more facts/stats for you.... Mahomes is 28-3 against our divisional opponents, including being 16-0 on the road having never lost on the opponent's field in 5 years. He is the only player in NFL history to win the MVP, the Super Bowl, and the Super Bowl MVP in the same season. In 5 years as a starter, the worst finish to a season he has had is losing in O.T. in the AFC Championship game. He is 2 O.T. losses away (he never got the ball or a chance in one of them) from going to the Super Bowl 5 straight times in his first 5 years as a starter. You haven't seen anything yet. In 2023 the Chiefs are going to be even better. Mahomes will finally have a solid defense and running game behind him. It's going to be crazy scary great. Super Bowl win #3 is coming!!!

Just to add some context: The touchdowns that happened at 28:26 and 29:07 occurred because the Chiefs coaches figured out an exploit in the Eagles defense where they would send a man in motion, and the defense would overplay it by switching and having a man run to the other side of the field. Chiefs saw that earlier in the year and faked the motion guy to where he didn't actually cross the field and instead would stay on that same side. What happens then is that he becomes wide open because the defenders switched.

Anything over 4000 yards passing in a single season is excellent. Over 5000 is legendary. Mahomes of course has eclipsed 5000 yards twice in his career. 5000+ yards passing in a season has been accomplished 13 times in NFL history, excluding Mahomes' two such seasons.

As a titans fan two things. One, I can't believe they didn't show the massive run he made on a bum ankle to get them into scoring position to send it to overtime. Two, we had like 7 starters out including our QB. Not saying we were a great team last year but we took them to the mat in that game and they could have presented it better because he almost single handedly kept them in it and won it while playing hurt.

Not sure if it's already been said but those last 2 Chiefs touchdowns were the exact same play, just on different ends of the field. It was a play the Jags against the Eagles earlier on in the season. The Eagles tended to bite hard on the lateral movement after the snap and left a man wide open on the opposing side.

Lamar Hunt, Chiefs Owner and founder of the AFL wanted to expand football into medium market cities but big city owners wouldn’t agree. So he devised a plan for a separate league. He wrote the idea on a napkin. Once per year then it was agreed that the best team from each league would play a game for “bragging rights”. KC played in two of the 4 of those game

The merger happened in 1970 and was when the NFL and upstart AFL joined to become part of one NFL. The AFL teams became part of the AFC (American Football Conference), whereas the previous NFL teams were now in the NFC (National Football Conference). 3 previously NFL teams (the Steelers, Colts, and Browns) joined the AFC in order to balance out the conferences.

5000 passing yards is exceptionally rare only 9 quarterbacks have done it on the history of the NFL Drew Breese managed to do it in 5 seaons throughout his career. Patrick Mahomes has done it twice in 5 years and one has done it as young as him.

Mahomes instincts are like Anakin Skywalker. He can see things before they happen. His awareness in real time is insane

Let me put it to you guys this way. A 4,000 yard passing season is like scoring 25 goals in the EPL in a season. It's not absolutely amazing but it's a really good season. The difference is he essentially scores at least 25 goals every year single season. His worst season of the 5 years he's been a starter he threw for 4031 yards. His average across those is 4791 yards which is basically like scoring 30 goals in an EPL league schedule. His best season is 5260 yards, so Erling Haaland or Alan Sheerer levels of production. The difference is not only does he have the passing yards and touchdown stats, he also wins alot. His winning percentage is extremely high. Among QBs that have played more than 16 games, he has the best winning percentage at 79.8%.

mahomes was a breath away from going to the saints- sean payton said "he's our man" after doin a team visit and even said "he was the best i ever evaluated". the bills had the pick before saints and they needed a corner.... so sean just assumed they would take lattimore. kc moved up at the last second and took him 10th overall. saints had two ppl on their early board, mahomes and lattimore. they ended up w lattimore who is still a top 7 corner- but imagine if patrick replaced brees. saints still haven't filled that spot 6 years later, and won't have the capital to get a franchise qb until a major team overhaul which they keep kicking down the road.

The stats are beyond incredible. He is the best for sure of this generation maybe the best of all time depending on how he finishes.

Prior to the season, the sentiment on the Chief’s outlook was not great since they hadn’t won the Super Bowl in two seasons, got knocked off by the Bengals in the AFC Championship the year prior and had failed to defeat them each time they played (since Mahomes and Burrow started playing each other), so the general feeling was that the Chiefs were no longer the team to beat in the AFC. It didn’t help that Mahomes had, statistically, his poorest season where he turned the ball over more. The Chiefs’ divisional opponents in the AFC West seemed to have improved massively in the offseason, with the Chargers bolstering their defense, the Broncos acquiring Russell Wilson, and the Raiders getting Davante Adams, one of the best receivers in the league. So, needless to say, a lot of talking heads had a very negative outlook on the Chiefs’s chances to win another Super Bowl, making their eventual success all the more sweeter for us Chiefs fans 😊

The Jaguars went on an amazing run to finish the season. Three games are a must watch. Ravens at Jags, Cowboys at Jags, and Chargers at Jags in the wild card round. I recommend sounds of the game on the jaguars channel.

This season, the commentators are barely talking about the Chiefs because last year, they ate crow! Some people are saying that they aren't doing as well, yet their stats are better than last year at the same time.

In 1966, under immense fan pressure to see a collaboration between the two biggest football leagues in the world, the Super Bowl was created to crown an all-out champion of both teams. The Chiefs lost Super Bowl 1 to the Green Bay Packers, and the narrative that started swirling that no team from the AFL could best an NFL team. That narrative was destroyed at Super Bowl III when “Broadway” Joe Namath and the New York Jets upset the Baltimore (now Indianapolis) Colts, forcing the merger of the two leagues on the AFL’s terms. Many expansions and changes later, most AFC teams and their fans still have a bit of a chip on their shoulder about being from the “amateur” league.

There are very few players in any sport where there is just nothing you can do to stop them.. so far better than anyone else at that sport that you just have to watch. Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and yes...Tom Brady.. a talent that is so far ahead of their time, that they change the game forever.. Patrick is one of these players. He is by far the best player in the NFL and its not close.

ur question about the stats, 5000 yards in a season is incredible, i think the next most that year was brady with 4600, and mahomes had 5200 at the end of the season (playoffs not included)

Oh yeah. During the off season, a great many sports analysts were absolutely writing the Chiefs off. Most were saying that the Broncos or Chargers were going to win the AFC West and the Chiefs may even end up dead last in the division. It's funny to look at the outcome and know what they're capable of.

One of the comments at the beginning of the video nailed what everyone thought about the Chiefs chances for the year. They were still a good team but during the offseason they lost key pieces while everyone else in the division and conference gained key pieces. On paper, heading into the season, it just didn't feel like it would be their year. 7:22 - Nick got there. "The Merger" = NFL-AFL merger in 1970. I went over this in a previous video's comment. I think it was the Ice Bowl video. Something interesting this video doesn't show about the divisional round game against the Jaguars is that, right after Mahomes hurts his ankle, he comes off and is replaced by longtime backup Chad Henne. The next drive, Henne proceeds to lead the Chiefs on a 12 play, 98 yard drive to increase their lead heading toward halftime. Beyond increasing the lead, this along with halftime itself gave Mahomes enough time to rest and get treatment so he could play the rest of the game. How Jacksonville made it to the divisional round is a story worth its own video. They won the AFC South (which was having a down year) with a 9-8 record. Since they won the division, they got to host their game in the wild card round but since they were the worst division winner, they had to host the best wild card team which was the 10-7 LA Chargers. The Chargers took a 27-0 lead in the 2nd quarter and a 27-7 lead into halftime but the Jags came all the way back to win 31-30 on a field goal with no time left. 23:12 - This whole conversation is a mess. The guys in front of the QB blocking for him are the OFFENSIVE line...OFFENSIVE. They BLOCK to PROTECT the quarterback but they don't defend or play defense...these are centers, guards or offensive guards, tackles or offensive tackle, and sometimes tight ends. Defensive back are something else entirely. They are players on the DEFENSE that try to DEFEND AGAINST or BREAK UP and INTERCEPT passes in the DEFENSIVE backfield...cornerbacks and safeties mainly. I know you think about it like, "they're 'defending' the QB against the pass rush" and that is true but that is basically the ONLY time the a derivative of the word defense can be used to describe something the team with the ball is doing. With the late hit in the conference title game, it's one of those cases where it is both pretty reasonable to see happening because it IS the heat of the moment and you work so hard all day to not let him beat you but that is also 1000% the right call and you just can't touch Mahomes once he gets out of bounds. So I both do and don't feel bad for Ossai. He knows what he did and has to live with it (he actually blew out his knee on that play too poor guy) but it's also something that many guys before him have done...just few in as big of a spot. Note on the Kelce rant after that game, he says, "BURROWHEAD MY ASS!" Earlier in the week, the Cincinnati mayor put out a tongue-in-cheek statement that took shots at Kansas City and the Chiefs and even called the Chiefs home stadium, GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium (formerly just Arrowhead Stadium), Burrow-head after Joe Burrow. Whenever anyone repeats that performance, or does as well on the offensive end as Philly did this year or as the Bengals keep doing to them, they have a chance...but those things don't seem to happen too often. Best Mahomes moment? That scramble to get the first down on the last drive of the Super Bowl before the phantom hold and the field goal. It was probably the fastest he had run since the Jacksonville game and he was tackled AT the ankles. When he pops up, you could tell that that was about the last bit of juice his ankle had left. Given all that had led up to that, it was INSANE.
