The Great War

The Great War

7 жыл бұрын

India was part of the British Empire during World War 1 and it was of vital importance to the war effort. Resources, manufacturing power and over 1,3 million men that served in the Army meant a great price for India to pay during the war. But even before the conflict, the call for independence grew louder and louder.

My great grandfather ( a sikh from punjab ) fought in the battle of Basra against the ottomans and survived . I grew listening his stories from my grandfather . According to him he even met gandhi when he was in africa ( after he left the army ) . we don't know if it's true or not but he was a great warrior and received 2 medels for his contribution in the war . I still have one medel .

My Great-Grandfather was a Sikh, and fought on the Western front, and against the Ottomans during WW1. At the time, British commanders believed that Sikhs were a martial race, and were utterly surprised by the letters Sikhs sent back home, discussing the horrors of the war. They believed that the Sikhs, and other martial races, did not have such feelings.

Do check out Vedika Kant's "If I die here, who will remember me". Very touching accounts of Indian soldiers writing letters back home during WWII. As you mentioned, it was a war they were unfamiliar. Many of these soldiers were sepoys - paid for mercenaries - a very different breed than the nationalist style of soldiering that the war made popular. I remember an account of one soldier from the book, where he describes chemical warfare. There was no equivalent word for it in hindi, so it went something along the lines of a poisonous smoke that kills all it touches or something. Again - a huge shocker for someone largely trained in 19th century warfare - with a LOT of tribal and caste related customs for war. Indians were not traditionally supposed to venture or fight overseas. Have been waiting to see your channel cover India in WWI as there isn't too much about it. Great job but this could have been a two-part video. P.S.: Bangalore has a WWI memorial in the very centre of town - the Times Square of the city if you will. Few really acknowledge the memorial or the stories behind it.

So glad to see this! Spending time at old colonial institutions like Aitchison College in Lahore or University of Delhi like I do, there are beautiful memorials to Afghan War and WWI, soldiers on their walls, which have always called to me about another story needing to be told. Can you do anything about the Gorkhas and their roles, or French West African soldiers as well? Did Indochina have a role to play too? Kudos to you and Flo for the excellent story telling and production value!

You need to do a piece on the Indian Princely States who in many cases volunteered forces some of which were rather bizarre, but some of those turned out to more useful than the Brits expected. A great number of the Princes also supplemented the forces through their own wealth and sometimes commanded too.

@Hindu Tiger Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj interesting inestelf because of horses diseappearing into quicksand. Even more interesting than that which was Princely states forces which they had and obligation to provide in return for defence from the Army of the Raj are those that actually raised and funded extra military, service, or relief efforts for the war by their own choice! Haifa.. very lovely Salmon pink Cumberbunds.

Apart from the obvious blasted landscapes and leveled forests, what were the macro-scale environmental impacts of the war? I image if a single volcano can cause global cooling, the millions of shells fired must have surely had a similar effect? What about ground water supplies getting tainted by lead and other heavy metals, or the arability of crop soil after the war, or the migration patterns of animals? Do you know of any major studies conducted during or shortly after the war regarding these or questions like them? Love the show, and more importantly, I love that vest. I like to imagine you have a Doug Funnie-esque closet full of identical outfits for every day of the week.

I hope someday you do an episode about Canadian First nations or Australian and New Zealand Aborigines in the great war. I remember one quote from the WWI episode the CBC documentary 'Canada; a people's history' from a Native volunteer that the First Nation's enlisted to prove their warrior spirit as not crushed by the reservation system and that they were setting out to prove their right to be considered British Subject. This was a great episode, guys. All these colonised people that were forced into the war do not get enough credit for their sacarfices.

I've always directed more of my interest of military history towards WW2 or early colonial conflicts but your channel has changed all that. Top quality production, research and presentation. Would be great once you've concluded the Great War altogether if you could visit other conflicts - WW2, Korea, American Revolution & Civil war, Vietnam, Gulf war - all in as much detail as you've done the Great War 😃

Thanks Indy. I have not seen all your videos. I like your impartiality. You are a true historian. Before 2013, if one had asked me about WWI, I would have said: England fought Germany and England won. Such was my ignorance about the Great War. In Trinidad, there is a mix of people's from all parts. Mainly descendants of freed african slaves and indentured servants from India. When WWI broke out, many of the Caucasian populace hastened to enlist. There is a museum here called The Chaguaramas ( place name) Military History and Aerospace Museum. The curator had written several books. One specifically in memory of those of the island, who went. I asked him about those of the Indian diaspora. What he said to me perked my curiosity. He said that Indians who wanted to volunteer were told that they would have to go to India and volunteer from there. This would not have been an easy undertaking. In this time when indentureship was still being practiced.

If the British Government had treated Indians as actual citizens with the same level of rights and political representation as people on the British Isles, they might still have been in possession of an empire today. Even right until the start of WW1, the British still had time to rectify their mismanagement. The initial demand wasn't for complete independence but self-governance within the Empire. The short sightedness of the British Government of that era was of epic proportions.

For all Pakistanies and Bengalis, remember that the indian troops were also composed of people from your nations, which at the time were all part of the British Raj, meaning they were all considered Indian. Don't forget your heritage and be grateful to have such a valuable piece of your heritage being connected to soldiers who fought and died in the Great War.

Are you indian. If you are than you should not be proud of our ancestors who fought for their colonizers. Slaves fighting for a master is nothing to be proud of, but something to be ashamed of, embarrassed even. I feel sympathy for my ancestors and unending hatred for the british.

Part of that British-Indian Army were the Gurkhas, the soldiers from Nepal. Since the treaty of 1816 following the Anglo-Nepal war, the British had started recruiting Nepalese in their army. Around 200,000 Nepalese Gurkhas fought in the war. In addition to that, around 14,000 soldiers from the Nepalese army itself also fought alongside the allies. Around 20,000 of them in total lost their lives. Some info can be found in the following links: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nepal_during_World_War_I www.dw.com/en/gurkhas-nepalese-warriors-in-world-war-i/a-17632181 blogs.commons.georgetown.edu/world-war-i-in-the-middle-east/seminar-participants/web-projects-2014/priya-dixit/ While valor of the Gurkhas is taken as a matter of great pride in Nepal and raise them to a level of superhumans, the romanticized view of these soldiers always ignores the horrors they had to go through and other human emotions as experienced by these soldiers as anyone else. old.himalmag.com/component/content/article/3030-dukha-during-the-world-war.html

If you are interested in historical boardgames, and this topic, it looks very good.
