We didn't start learning drills till 9th grade. But we did have a few times in 7th and 8th grade that we got to march in some parades. I'd marched my whole life so that was nothing new. Although going from baton marching to band marching was a little different.

My brother was in the famous marching band for the University of Notre Dame thirty years ago. They practiced as much or nearly as much as the (American) football team, 5-6 days per week. The band even has its own football field to practice on, separate from the practice field for the football team. I don't remember how large the band was then, but it currently has about 380 members. Every year he would need to leave home for a week after Christmas to travel halfway or all the way across the country to where the "Bowl Game" was being played. It was an enormous commitment, without any financial compensation.

@@jimgreen5788 No, or nothing significant. It cost my parents more to send him to a private university than to send both me and my other brother to public universities, even though there wasn't a huge difference in tuition. The public universities, not surprisingly, were far more generous in recognizing the need for financial assistance.

The person on the sideline you mentioned, James, is called the drum major. He or she is the conductor for the ensamble. They are always students. They are usually picked for their musical skill and leadership abilities. It is all choreographed. It is mapped out so they know exactly where to go in the music. They practice it until it becomes muscle memory and they don't have to really think much about it. They have to memorize the music parts. If you could see the individual members you would see they aren't looking at a music score.

The Ohio State drum major doesn't direct the band; he's a showman. The band director is conducting from the sideline atop a ladder. The amazing thing is that the band does a different program every week! Most bands do one program for the entire marching season. There is a reason the OSUMB is referred as "THE BEST DAMN BAND IN THE LAND" (TBDBITL)!

@@roberthudson1959 that's why I specified "OSU". I marched during high school being a mellophone soloist my junior and senior years. I did this for 4 years. It takes endless repetition in scorching heat to do this. The most difficult part is the time it takes sound to travel distances causes a delay in what you hear people on the other side of the field playing. We have to follow the drum major’s tempo no matter what we hear around us.

Our high school bands put on shows like this also so the band members are doing this well by the time they reach college. It's like dancing you can know steps to one dance that are used in another so if you learn the individual moves it's a snap to put the steps in sequence for each routine. It's incredible to watch.
@lizlee6290
@lizlee6290 8 ай бұрын
Each band member has a several-page chart of their particular place in the whole piece, and their steps. Marching on the football field is absolutely crucial, because it has yard lines and hashmarks (the marks in between the yard lines) to go by. (Each individual is responsible for counting only their own steps, not relying on following anyone else. That's a recipe for disaster.) Then it's hours of practice, memorization, practice, memorization, until it's nailed. That's memorizing steps AND music.

Basically, they divide up the show into sixteen beat portions, and each member of the marching band knows where they're supposed to be by the number of steps from a yard line and sideline at each of those points in time, and then has to march evenly to get from point A to point B during those sixteen beats. Some bands make specific diagrams about what they're supposed to look like every sixteen beats, others just tell each member where to be each of those times.

Drill sheets... I think I still have a few stored away from back when I was in the HS band from '93-98. We'd always play games with the positions as the charting software was limited in its resolution and would show us off by half a yard or so, meaning we'd argue against the proper spacing and lineup with the director because he had us plotted two steps out of line. :D

College marching bands can be very entertaining; but here in Texas where I live, it is very intense competition at the high school level. Schools go all out with props, elaborate themes, and very talented Color Guards too. It's actually just as competitive as football and there are multiple marching competitions each year at the local, state, and even national level. However, the absolute best are the national drum corpse that make up Drum Core International (DCI). There are many videos on KZfaq and the cream of the crop is The Blue Devils. They have the most championships and 1st place awards than any other corpse, and they also hold the record for the highest score ever given by the judges. Other favorites are The Phantom Regiment, The Blue Coats, Carolina Crown, The Cavaliers, Santa Clara Vanguard, and others. Most people have no idea the amount of planning, show design, choreography, prop design, practice hours, and musicianship that goes into it. DCI is composed of high school and college aged musicians who must pay entry fees and audition for the corpse of their choice, and only a few make it each year. As big as the corpse seem to be, there are many times as many who didn't make the cut. Among the many performance videos on KZfaq, you can also find some practice videos, GoPro footage from members, and even a few videos specifically about the experience of trying out and being a member of a corpse. Pretty impressive stuff!

Truth about TX HS football. I remember first riding around San Angelo, where I was stationed in the late '80s with a friend who had a car, and had been there awhile. We passed a really big concrete stadium. I said "That looks super nice, but why isn't it on the ASU campus?" He was like "Umm, that's actually the high-school stadium . . ." Later, we saw the ASU stadium, which was just some metal bleachers.
@paulayala6174
@paulayala6174 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, some Texas schools are so popular when it comes to their football teams that they literally have their own stadium on or near their campus. Judson HS (in Converse is one such school. They're literally two campuses and their football program is highly supported by the whole city of Converse. Everybody knows about Odessa Permeant because of the movie and TV series Friday Night Lights that's based on them, but the Judson Rockets were their main competitor for the state championship several years in the 90's Here in San Antonio, we have multiple school districts and the three biggest are San Antonio ISD, Northside ISD, and North East ISD. SAISD is more of a lower income district, but NISD and NEISD are two of the largest school districts in the state and have several large stadiums. My three kids were all in the band program at John Jay HS, Science and Engineering Academy and their home games were all played at Gus Stadium, a sizeable venue that served as the home field for several schools, but also hosted many state playoff games, regional sports events, and marching band competitions. Texas has UIL, which manages athletic and band competitions and the stadium would host the regional UIL marching contest. Most of the time, all NISD bands would score 1st Division rating from all three judges. It's not until the area competitions where there's more separation as they start to widdle down to the state level participants. The largest bands, like O'Connor HS, number around 330 students, and they don't even match their Freshmen. O'Connor and Clark high schools have a rich history in marching band success. Both NISD and NEISD have large bands and it's amazing watching their elaborate performances. Some are on KZfaq (my favorite is from O'Connor and I believe is called Zombie Apocalypse. Those district stadiums are actually located on athletic complexes that also have aquatic centers for swim competitions, basketball arenas, tennis courts, several baseball diamonds, and support full track & field events as well. For NISD, one of those complexes was built right next to a new high school campus, so it serves as both a district venue and that schools home field and houses their athletic department. Concessions at these venues are run by a nonprofit comprised of volunteers from all band and athletic booster organizations (nonprofits formed by parents to support their kid's extracurricular activities). Profits are evenly split among all booster clubs and is their primary source of income. Those funds pay for competition entry fees, bus and travel accommodations, uniform maintenance, props, instrument purchases and repairs, judging fees, section techs, electrical equipment, trailers/rigs, music composition, show design, Color Guards uniforms and flags, and much more. High school band programs wouldn't exist without their band boosters and like I said, the competition is tough. But man is it a blast to be a part of. And the kids learn so much from it too, like team work, sportsmanship, leadership, perseverance, dedication, determination, and discipline. Athletic students tend to have higher grades and academic accomplishments than average students, and band students usually do even better. All three of my kids were section leaders and captains in their marching bands and my youngest even made Drum Major her senior year. All three also performed with the orchestra and Jazz band. The two oldest are now teachers and our youngest is almost done with her music major and will most likely be a music director in her own right. She did try out for a DCI corpse once, but didn't make the cut. Best of all though, while the Band Director my oldest kids had was no longer at the school when my youngest got there, he became her private instructor and really helped her a lot. He comments now that is better at playing the trombone than he is. He and his family are now very close friends with ours.

The way this works is that the drill is plotted on a grid. Every member has access to a tablet computer, and they learn where they are supposed to be, then when where they are supposed to be next. They don't need to know what the whole formation looks like, just how to execute their role. Ohio State's big rival is Michigan, which is why the "enemy" ship was flying an "M." Incidentally, they often do perform a different show every week.

Before you get started, we need to clear the air. This is a halftime show, rather than a pre-game show. Mom said that they must spend hours practicing. They actually spend more hours on the football field than the the football team itself during the week before a home game (all home games get a halftime show). The "guy at the bottom' is the drum major. In the Jurassic Park section, there was someone just to the upper right of the 10 dressed in white. He got swallowed at 8:50, and a few seconds later, his helmet was spit out. The guy was from the opposing team--U. of Michigan. Then, in the Pirates of the Caribbean section, their ship was promptly sunk. That just wasn't their day.😀

There is a reason OSU’s marching band is called TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band in the Land)! They perform a different show like this during halftime of every home game. It is wonderful to see in person. A lot of people go buy concessions or use the loo during halftime, but most wouldn’t dare to miss the show. Another tradition is the performing of Script Ohio with a 4th or 5th year sousaphone player dotting the i at the end. Students get class credit for being in band, since they spend so many hours practicing for their performances. Tryouts for the band in the spring for the next year are grueling, and each member must tryout to make or keep their position.

I remember seeing the Marching Owl Band ("MOB") of Rice University back 40+ years ago. Starting, they were randomly scattered about in the stadium, they started playing and ran down from their places in the stadium and formed a shape on the field. Then they scattered - seemingly randomly - and formed another shape and repeated this for about 10 minutes. They were playing a team whose mascot was a dog who had gone missing the previous week. At the end of their performance, they played "Where oh where has your little dog gone" and formed a fire hydrant on the field. Rice fans were rolling with laughter while the opponents were pretty angry. Marching bands are pretty amazing when you see what they can do.

My brother got a BA in music performance from OSU and was in the drum-line. Like most band members, he started marching in 6th grade, and playing while moving in specific patterns was already a practiced skill. He said it took daily practice, individually, as a section, and all together so routines become second nature. As a snare drummer, he also learned breathing techniques, with separate physical training beyond band practice to be at performance level. I’ve been a dancer my whole life, and he equated it to a dance routine that I still remember when I was a teenager, some 15 years ago, that becomes so ingrained almost instinctual.

Typically these shows are during the half time of the game, or as it is called "The Half Time Show". In some games, usually bowl games, they would have both teams bands come out and perform. You might like to react to "The Rose Parade", as both opposing teams in the "The Rose Bowl" march and perform in the parade.

In marching band they give you a chart with dots that are numbered. On the top it tells you how many beats to get to the dot. You just follow your dot. It’s the number of beats between that make it either far or close. In high school we had a rotating cube. And if you were in the middle of that cube you barely moved and if you were on the outside you were hauling a$$. Rotating cubes are very hard because every person must be exactly in place it it will appear like a blob. The hardest part really is getting the feet and hips to do what they need to do for the roll-step and crab-walk.

My sibling was in marching band in HS. These musicians are athletes at the same time. In our town, they had to go to Band Camp over the summer to prepare for the fall season. The band was better than the football team!

Many of my cousins, an uncle, friends and father could attest...They all attended or worked at The Ohio State University, and will admit they are the best college marching band in the land...I can relate to marching bands, as I am a former member of the John Dickinson High School Band in Delaware. We won several competitions in several states. I can tell you I spent many hours of marching practice and instrument practice to make those pictures and music for the people in the stands.

I was in my High School Marching Band for 2 years (also in Ohio) as part of the Color Guard (flag, baton, ribbon, and rifle twirling) and I can confirm that high school marching band is grueling work. We prepared and practiced for MONTHS before parade and football season starts. Including during our summer break when we had band camp - which again, grueling. People truly underestimate the work and dedication it takes to be in a marching band.... hours and hours and hours in the heat, cold, sun, rain, snow, muscles aching, sweat dripping down into your eyes, going back and forth on the field to learn every foot placement and every movement of your body over and over again until it becomes muscle memory because each and every person needs to be in sync (you can't even march in place if you're not supposed to - it can be seen and its a major no-no during band competition... I should know, I got called out for it).... and my school's Band Director lead us with a tough military attitude she learned when she was actually in the military and part of the Military Band. I don't know if it's just an Ohio thing but marching band is taken seriously in many circles and perfection is expected, even in high school, perhaps BECAUSE our college band - the Ohio State University band - is so heralded throughout the country. (The Best Damn Band in the Land!!!) Just as high school football players are scouted out by college teams, the marching band department scouts out exceptional band members as well. It is a whole thing that causal football fans probably know little about.

OSU Marching band spends about 30 hours a week leaning the music and choreography of the program. Each student is given an IPad with music and programs set up on, and they learn off from them.

Yeah! Mom's back! (Sally). This is what WE (Ohioans, plus, grudgingly lots of other state's residents call "The Best Damn Band I(n the Land!" Drum Major - baton guy. This was at the Ohio State vs Michigan GAme, so the Pirates of the Carribean M - Michigan ship got sunk. We did this same stuff in Jr. High and High school and this is the "it", many of those kids get scholarships - at least partial for doing the marching band. Love it when you guys invite Sally.

I never got that into marching bands, only did my local 4th of July community parade and that was enough for me, but they apparently practice a lot more than you'd think. There's the music in which they have little placards of for reference. They're more or less supposed to memorize that and they practice in a manner like, "At this point in this song, I need to be 3 steps to the left and 4 steps forward from my last waypoint. Wait and play for 2 and a half measures and then be behind me by 10 steps and 3 more steps to the left by such and such a measure." So they practice the music, they practice the positioning to the music, and probably the most difficult part that I experienced is keeping composed during the entire thing. I played the baritone saxophone in my local band and it takes a lot of breath to play that thing in the first place and a bit of control to make it sound good. Add a bit of a brisk walk on to that and it gets harder and harder. You add it to these students and having to remember, "be here by this point. Then be there by then. Walk with this big of gait and flair the horn a bit." all while they're breathing anywhere from a croquet ball to a large bowling ball's mass worth of air through their instrument every breath and they dance a bit of a jig. Let's just say the adage of solving a rubics cube on a unicycle is applicable, but just put it on the summit of Mount Everest to get the lack of oxygen these guys and gals go through. I thought marching down a street for about a half mile was bad while playing patriotic marches and having kids throw candy at me to try to get some in the bell of my sax, but having to do these routines in the heat repeatedly is far worse.

Marching band does, in fact, take days and sometimes even weeks of practice to learn a single show, but from an individual perspective, it's not really all that hard to learn. You have to know your music, obviously, but in terms of knowing where to be and when, it's all a matter of FIRST: where you are on the field in relation to where everyone else around you is, and SECONDLY: where you are on the field in relation to the grid. Every point between different motions is a "set," and as long as you know where your sets are at what point in the music, you'll do just fine. It's a lot of counting at first, but once your brain matches a location to a point in the music, it almost becomes instinctive. And the reason why where you are in relation to the other band members is important BEFORE the position in relation to the grid is that if everyone is out of position in relation to the grid, nobody except the band will know that they're out of place, but if even ONE person is out of position in relation to everyone else, EVERYONE will notice. So the incentive for everyone to be in lock-step and know their sets forwards and backwards is incredible pressure... but by the time the shoes hit the field, pretty much everyone has it down. The conductor on the sideline is called a drum major. And yes, some bands do have multiple shows, often one that they take on the road to competitions and another that they do at halftime. I was in this style of marching band in high school. We weren't as BIG as OSU's band, but we did some pretty complex shows. In my junior year, 2001-2002, we won more awards in marching band competitions than the entire rest of the school had won since opening in 1979. We had to buy our own trophy case just to fit everything. The only reason I didn't continue with it into college is because my college didn't have a marching band (didn't even have a football team, shockingly enough). I'll be 40 in about a year, and I still miss it.

We got a flip chart of shapes we were going to make and we would mark our spot on each so we knew where to go. Learning the music was our job. Usually after a nonplaying walk thru or two, I would have my steps down. One person is not traveling that far, it is all of us together. Then just lots of practice. New one each week when I was in high school and junior college. The band director conducts from riser on sideline. Drum major only leads in parades and getting band on field. Dy Using show he may do baton work or conduct so everyone can see when their backs are turned.

You missed the Buckeyes sinking the Michigan ship! Rivalry is real. This is not the best halftime show. But it is a good one! Their nickname is "THE Best Damn Band in the Land" !!! The drum major for Ohio State doesn't direct the band. They learn their parts separately... there is a computer program that formats the show and then print out the movement of every single dot (person) on the field. Students try out from all over the world for this band. Elite.

We had little discs in different colors for each of us and we learned by doingvit over and over and over again until we didnt need the disc's lol. Every sat as well all day long. We began practicing on summer break for a month before school started. We had 2 shows we had to learn one for competitions and one for games it was such hard work and dedication
