The British Museum, London - the Chinese ceramics in the China Gallery at the British Museum, London. Let's travel to the British Museum in London and let's visit the Chinese gallery (China Gallery) to view the priceless Chinese ceramics. Within the China Gallery of the British Museum almost 1,700 objects are examples of the finest Chinese ceramics in the world, dating from the 3rd to the 20th century. Some of the Chinese ceramics at the British Museum are unique creations, while others were mass-produced in batches of several hundred at a time. Technological innovations and the use of regional raw materials mean that Chinese ceramics are visually diverse.
Porcelain was first produced in China around AD 600. Chinese ceramics, by far the most advanced in the world, were made for the imperial court, the domestic market or for export. Sir Percival David mostly collected objects of imperial quality of traditional Chinese ceramics and most of these Chinese ceramics can now ne seen at the British Museum in London.
The British Museum, in the Bloomsbury area of London, United Kingdom, is a public institution dedicated to human history, art and culture. Its permanent collection of some eight million works is among the largest and most comprehensive in existence, having been widely sourced during the era of the British Empire.

Magnificent video of the exhibit of Chinese Ceramics and Porcelain from the various Chinese Dynasty's to the present time. The Ceramics and the Porcelain pieces are a master's work of art. Since the British obtained these pieces by robbing, pillaging and stealing from the Chinese Summer Palace, I personally feel that the Ceramics and Porcelain represent ill gotton loot that must be either returned to the Chinese people or arrangements must be made to compensate the Chinese People for their losses in full. These masterpieces, can never be replaced or re-created for the Chinese People. I DO NOT subscribe to the theory that these masterpieces would have been lost or destroyed during the Ming or other Chinese dynasty's of they had not been pillages, robbed or stolen by the British People. Ill gotton loot no matter how one looks at it, simply remains as ill gotton loot! In my opinion, these ceramics and Porcelain should be returned to the Chinese People so that they can be returned to the Chinese People and put on display for all the Chinese People and people living in the rest of the world in museums located throughout China. The British are well known worldwide for their own Ceramic and Porcelain pieces, so I can see no reason why they can not create these pieces on their own for manufacture and display in British Museums made and created by the British People. Vic, this is a magnificent video that you produced for the world to view and enjoy.

I live very close to the British Museum and I have spent many hours there over the last few years... there are treasures from all around the world and the British will never accept the fact, sadly, that they were taken illegally from their original locations... the Parthenon marbles (from Greece) are an excellent example of this...

If the Chinese government hadn't backed the boxers who attacked the British and other foreigners , the British wouldn't have needed to send a army to save the embassies in Peking . If you lose a war or battle often times soldiers carry off loot . Basically don't start a war and then lose and if you lose good luck getting your stuff back a hundred years later

It is an interesting comment . There is something almost cynical and definitely ironic about most of the Chinese KNOWN masterpieces being in museums around the world , mostly the British and the Louvre . It is important to note that many pieces were stolen . I am not accusing or pointing fingers , i am just telling a fact . There was a lot of stealing going on between China and Europe and the trade of Porcelain vs Tin wasn't fair at all on the Chinese . But that's a whole different story . The irony is that , when the cultural revolution and Mao happened , the new government destroyed most of the imperial masterpieces , from ceramic, to metal work, wood work, architecture etc . Which is why i used the word KNOWN , as unfortunately, the TRUE treasures of imperial China have been smashed and burned and destroyed by the cultural revolution and communism. Now China is capitalist and wants its masterpieces back, unfortunately they are now in private collections and musuems outside China and though some may have been stolen , this is stealing them that has protected them from destruction. The sad part being that we will never know what were the most beautiful pre Mao, imperial masterpieces as almost none of them remain today . So yes there is something cynical and ironic about being able to appreciate Chinese art at its finest in museums outside China , but it also shows the importance of museums today and throughout history .

@@morganolfursson2560 obviously the Red Guards didn't destroy all the treasures. Many survived the revolution as most relics were in private ownership and hidden. Nowadays in Beijing museums, there are many relics, bronze historical treasures that survived in China during that revolution. Chinese agree that was wrong And not that long afterwards, China unearthed the infamous terracotta army and took real good care of it. They value the archaeological dig and have their own major museums too.

Nice work, Vic. It's a pity the lighting was so awful making the colors all wrong. Those of us who study Chinese ceramics, though, know exactly what we are looking at. The low lighting did allow us to see all the hand modeling of the clay and that was illuminated. Thanks for caring.

I'll be there next week. Sadly, the Percival David Museum closed and loaned all their objects to the BM. There, the lighting was great and they allowed you to spend the whole day there photographing objects. Everything was on glass shelves to you could crouch down and photograph the bottom of all the pieces as well. Quite the education. Have fun on your trip.

The techniques behind are the most valuable. We can't even duplicate with today's technology like some colors eg Chinese red, Chinese purple... Otherwise, they wouldn't have been labeled as Chinese.

Koko Stillwell They would all have been smashed during the cultural revolution if they didn't so lets all give thanks for the thieving plundering British Museum for protecting these works for us to look at today. Oh and the Assyrian/Babylonian collection which would currently be in the process of being smashed apart by terrorists were it still in iraq today.

A ming dragon vase which looks similar to the one shown at the start of the video sold for $20 million at christie's not long ago a Ru ware brush washing bowl similar to one in the museum's collection sold for $26 million. Some items in the collection are totally unique and were they ever to come up for sale (which they won't) they could sell insane amounts of money. The collection as a whole is worth several billion us dollars.
