2/95th Rifles (Australia) living history group reports on some conclusions about how the stoppers on British Army canteens used during the Napoleonic Wars were attached to the canteen. And why.
Canteen used is a properly coopered reproduction constructed by The Village Cooper, South Australia.

Tx for the feedback. Tying the stopper like this is truely a forgotten piece of history.

How come the British army switched from tin to wood for materials for their canteens? I am a reenactor and fifer with the 43rd Regiment of Foot and the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment (I do American Revolution.). During the time, of the Revolution, the British army used tin canteens. The Continental army, though they preferred tin, used wood due to not being able to get adequate amounts of tin to supply for canteens. How come the British army made the switch from the time of the American Revolution to the Napoleonic Wars?

Was not aware a tin canteen was used prior to the Napoleonic Wars. Maybe cost was the problem given the huge number of canteens produced. Wood was used through the Crimean War in the 1850s.

There is a bit of history available here: www.collegehillarsenal.com/shop/product.php?productid=1487 No real explanation as to the reason for the change of materials. although the wooden canteens held 50% more water which was probably appreciated by the soldiers. However, there must have been an evaluation by the Board of Ordinance and the design of the replacement canteen would have been agreed before the first orders were placed. Perhaps, if we can find that it will explain the criteria and justification for the decision..

Hi, Do you have any information on dimensions of the water bottle and how many slats form the outside? A friend of mine would like to try and reproduce one. Many thanks. Excellent videos by the way.

I'd be interested in purchasing one of these, would it be possible to provide contact information for The Village Cooper?

What would the B (Arrow) O mean?

The Broad Arrow and BO is the standard mark of British Government military ownership during the Napoleonic Wars. BO is Board of Ordnance.

Research has led us to believe that the BO wasn't added to canteens until after the 1830's, given the Board Ordnance didn't supply them to the troops, much like the blankets. Instead they would be stamped 'G(broad arrow)R', much like their blankets.
