An example of a British Parliamentary debate for the West Australian Debating League's upcoming BP Debating Competition.
The topic is: "That we Should Privatise Prisons"
Find out more at www.wadl.org/bpcomp/bp-debating
-----
British Parliamentary Debating is based on the style of debate that occurs in the British Parliament. In BP debates there are four teams of two who are all competing against each other. The debate is divided into two 'houses': the Government who proposes the motion (topic) and the Opposition who opposes the motion. These two 'houses' are further divided into Opening and Closing halves. Therefore, each debate will consist of four teams, with each team acting as one of the following:
Opening Government (OG)
Opening Opposition (OO)
Closing Government (CG)
Closing Opposition (CO)
Each team has two speakers, all of which have their own positions. The order of speakers is as follows:
Prime Minister (OG)
Leader of the Opposition (OO)
Deputy Prime Minister (OG)
Deputy Leader of the Opposition (OO)
Member for the Government (CG)
Member for the Opposition (CO)
Government Whip (CG)
Opposition Whip (CO)
Speakers in the WADL BP Competition will speak for 6-7 minutes, with Points of Information offered between the 1-6 minute mark. Each speaker has a different role and responsibility, and all the technical rules and procedures of BP Debating can be found in the 2017 BP Competition Debating Handbook.

i like watching opponents whimper after i reject their POI and then giving them hard ones that my OW has prepared, that if they reject their opinion would not look valid, and they'll look weak. feels good man.

A better example rather than the ambulance could have been privatised hospitals and how they work
@fatman8047
@fatman8047 5 жыл бұрын
AFAIK Privatized hospitals exist alongside public hospitals. The onus is on the person being treated if they wish to opt for private treatment over government provided treatment. A system like this would obv be flawed in a prison system because then it disproportionately affects the lower socioeconomic classes, with people in the lower income margins being subjugated to the public prison system, which would likely have different standards of rehabilitation. This would create a disparity in the prison system, with richer people being able to effectively have an easier time when facing incarceration (ironic considering rich people are less likely to face incarceration in the first place lmao). However, the government's model has ALL prisons being taken over by private cooperations so I don't really see how that would be argued on the side of the 'consumer' (prisoners don't really consume prison services but i can't think of a better way to word it lmao). Care to elaborate on how the government could use private hospitals as a point of comparison to their advantage in this debate?

To the opening government, if the government gets to spend the prison budget in things like crime prevention activities . Then it means over time there is a greater likelihood that the private prison businesses are going to lose . Please engage .

Hmm not really per say. She could have just structured her arguments better. She did alot of rambling and not fleshing out her points. Didn't really much of WHY would prisons be better privatised vs being funded by the public.
