I thought the correct way to can open is to have the opener parallel with the counter.

That's the "new" method, not sure if it's any safer. The inner edge is sharp this way, the entire edge is sharp in the parallel method.

Pie in a can is odd. Interesing, but odd. Quirky little Aussie Dittie in the intro, nice touch. If you're looking for more ideas there's a whole world of weird canned food out there. Canned cheeseburgers, whole chickens... A few creators have done whole series on them, @jolly for example.

I will be honest here, there is only 2 good frey bentos pies, the steak or the mince, , if you do try again, knock the heat down, i know it says temp on the TIN, lower heat, gets better pastry results, cooks through a little better, whet we do, is slow, on backing tray, just before the end, lift the pastry top, turn upside down and bake for a further 10 minutes, helps get rid of thta uncooked pastry, that part sitting on top of the meantand gravy
