Bryan Gould and Roy Jenkins had been in the parliamentary Labour Party together in the 1970s. Gould lost his seat in 1979 but got back into Parliament in the 1983 election

Hello from 2024. Cyril Smith was invited to a social gathering at my great great aunts house (she was living in Britain at the time ,in the early 80’s.) At this party in Rochdale Smith zoomed in on my aunt’s son who was 11 years old. My aunts son hid in the bathroom but Smith pushed his way in. He got his 🍆 out and approached the lad‼️ luckily my aunts son ran between Smiths legs and escaped. God knows what Smith would’ve done to the boy😳 The leaders of his party knew what he was like but ignored it,the 💩heads🤬🤬

December 2019, the party is back on the national stage and up for 20 seats: wiki your constituency and see if they're standing, then vote for them (Tooting and Tottenham, in London).

The SDP are now up to around 91 Prospective Parliamentary Candidates in the upcoming General Election, which entitles the party to a party political broadcast in England (79 threshold). Many people are joining the party - like myself who previously belonged to no party - because the political programme is so good.

The SPD was an interesting idea and perhaps had events such as Benn's defeat for deputy leader and the Falkland's War not intervened, maybe something could have come of it. But the whole "Alliance" thing with the Liberals was just a disaster. You start a new party it has to stand on its own two feet and stand for something. To stand for electoral gamesmanship all the while the average voter is wondering why the Gang of Four didn't just join the Liberal Party or why nor just merge the parties (which ultimately did happen) was electoral malpractice pure and simple and many careers ruined as a result

Not so. There are a lot of studies that show that if the SDP hadn't come about then the Tory majority in 1983 and 1987 would have been even bigger because many disillusioned Labour voters would have switched directly to the Tories.

@@th8257 That is the point! Matthew Goodwin has tried to elucidate how the extremism is rooted in the disaffection with the hollow centre. The lack of any 'normal' voices leaves the ordinary person completely disenfranchised from politics. Tony Blair got this and won two huge elections despite not getting all of the media onside. Being in "the centre" has almost nothing to do with indecision or woolly-headedness. The Gang of Four were visionaries and we owe them our current existence.
