I'd go camping with my grandparents all the time. Grandpa and my job was to start the camp fire for cooking but first he'd put some music on. He put in a cassette tape of Johnny Cash on and "A Boy named Sue" was the first song I heard from Johnny and I was hooked. I'm almost 47 and been a Johnny fan since I was 7 years old.

This concert was filmed in a prison- all the audience members are prisoners. Johnny did a lot for prison reform. All time fav ❤️

My daddy loved Johnny Cash! I don’t think there was ever a song that he did but my dad he did not like. On my daddy’s 76th birthday, which was a week before he died, we had a lunch for him. At the restaurant I played all Johnny Cash songs on the jukebox for him.

I grew up with John. and a bunch of others. He had a music show and sang this, but 'bleeped' out the SOB part. He was singing to prisoners here. Really miss the old time stuff, variety hours, Hee Haw, Rowen & Martins Laugh In, Carol Burnett. Dean Martin. All gone.

Merle Haggard was an inmate at San Quentin prison during one of the times that Johnny performed there. That was before Merle started his music career. I guess life came full circle later down the road, when he did an imitation of Johnny on a show, and Johnny came out and sang with him.

AT one of his prison concerts, that is where he met Merle Haggard, who was a prisoner there at the time. Merle and Johnny talked and that is where Merle changed his ways. When he left prison, he started singing and became well known. President Reagan gave him his pardon and he of course, did a concert where President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy attended. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bN15q6letauVqWQ.html BTW, here's the video of Johnny's full concert at San Quentin in 1969 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZqJpaeX29e0g2g.html

there's a verse in this version missing between the first and the second one: "Well he must have thought that it was quite a joke because it got a lot of laughs from a lot of folks. Seems I had to fight my whole life through. Some gal would giggle and I'd get red. Some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head. I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named Sue." After that comes the verse about him roaming from town to town to hide his shame and watching to kill the man that gave him that name lol :). idk why but it's funnier to me as a complete song, not a chopped one like this :)
